Iteration #1

Objective: Create an iteration from words

to form via algorithm.

Algorithm: hopefully joyful, quietly listening,

drivingly ambitious

Successes:

-Iteration is an representation of algorithm

-Metaphors are transposed into materials with varied structural

significance

-Flowers=hope/joy, scotch tape = quiet, paperclip = driving

Weaknesses:

-No solid design, inconsistent structural elements (bending paper

clips)

-Lacking in structure/not architectural

-Weak base (Does not stand)

Iteration #2

Objective: Reconstruct iteration 1 to better communicate design intentions.

Successes:

-Iteration becomes more

structural with wall components.

-Intentional juxtaposition of

flowers on opposing walls.

Weaknesses:

-Poor choice of materials:

-Paper is too thin to give walls

strength and rigidness

-Botany is inconsistent and

perishable.

-Still lacks clear structural intent.

Iteration #3

Objective: Create an iteration that is responsive to a

narrative.

Successes:

-Proposed metaphors in narrative are

expressed (birds, soaring, dreams).

-Iteration has more concrete structural

components.

-Organization of expressions in paper

clips: yellow, blue, red.

Weaknesses:

-No architectural function. “Plop art”

-Still lacks a true structure.

-Cotton is too inconsistent to be used as

a structural component.

Iteration #4

Objective: Display understanding of proportion through a series

of proportional studies.

Successes:

-Explored a variety of proportional

studies, including: Fibonacci (top

right), rhythm &repetition (lower left)

-Lower right study displays grouping of

structural components, and clear

hierarchal organization.

Weaknesses:

-Some proportional studies were not

true proportional studies (top left)

-More explorations could have been

performed, such as with rotation,

juxtaposition or conjunction.

Iteration #5

Objective: Generate spatial

expressions using a

matrix to combine two

variables.

Successes:

-All 20 possible spatial expressions are

explored on matrix combining spatial

relationships (rows: centralized, linear,

radial, clustered, interlocking) and spatial

organizations (columns: space within,

interlocking, adjacent, space linked)

Weaknesses:

-Spatial properties could be defined and

exaggerated more for clarity.

Page 7: Arch-101 Portfolio - Raymond So

Iteration #6

Objective: Create 3 diverse spatial experiences and express as a

tectonic journey.

Successes:

-All 3 spatial experiences are

addressed in design in order of

welcoming, to monumental, to

tranquil.

Weaknesses:

-Lacked cohesiveness between 3

spaces, no unity.

-Low level of craft.

-Presentation on poster-board is too

large, needs to be scaled down.

Page 8: Arch-101 Portfolio - Raymond So

Iteration #7

Objective: Reconstruct journey of 3 spaces onto a site and

express in terms of frames and surfaces.

Successes:

-Attention is given to hierarchy in

triangular expressions.

-Function of architecture responds to

beach site (bridge, dock, gazebo).

Weaknesses:

-Frames are ineffective in framing

space. Unclear frames.

-Craft is still unsatisfactory.

-Metaphor of shark is too literal.

-Lacks linearity.

-Low elevation site makes function of

bridge irrelevant.

Page 9: Arch-101 Portfolio - Raymond So

Iteration #8

Objective: Reconstruct tectonic

journey that it responds to site.

Successes:

-Frame is more distinct in design.

-Function of lighthouse successfully integrates

into site.

Weaknesses:

-Unclear which is true entrance.

-Lacks completion in frame.

-More design approaches could be explored,

such as through slotting components.

-Research can be done on true lighthouse

designs.
