DESCRIPTIONMolly Darling wants life to be as simple as wellies and porridge – this is rural Ireland after all. Instead, Mum’s hiding in the attic; Dad’s run away, leaving only a PowerPoint to explain; her sister has a ham sandwich for a fiancé; there’s a boy and THE silence; her BFF will stop at nothing to go viral; and the chickens are missing. It’s enough to make any girl cantankerous. But she’ll fix it all. Easy, right?

An extract from

THE CANTANKEROUS MOLLY DARLINGAlvy Carragher‘Toast?’ I say, popping a stale piece of bread into the toaster.

‘I don’t even eat gluten. Do you know how bad gluten is?’ Polly says, glaring at the toaster as if it has been sent to climb down her throat and pollute her blood stream.

‘Well maybe you should get some sleep instead?’

Polly nods, shoulders sagging as she straightens up and wipes at her eyes, causing the leftover tears to smudge her mascara and leave dark streaks. I can’t help wondering if Dermot is back in town, maybe with a new girlfriend?

When the toast is up, we make our way soundlessly upstairs and settle ourselves on Polly’s bed. She flops down with a sigh of relief, and I perch beside her, ready to flee if she takes another turn for the dramatic.

‘You’re so good to me, Molly. I should tell you my news,’ Polly says. She props herself up with all the pillows on her bed, loosening her hair from its plait and letting it fall in greasy hair-sprayed clumps around her face. Her big blue eyes are red rimmed. She wiggles her bra out from under her dress, sighing with relief, before nestling back into the cushions.

‘I’m getting married, Molly,’ she says, holding up

her hand, and revealing a ring. ‘Everything will be okay now.’

‘Married … Dermot?’ I’m baffled, Dermot left for South Korea ages ago, and last I’d heard, Polly had been dating anyone with a face since.

‘No, not Dermot, Brian …’ she says with a tinge of sadness.

‘Who?’ She yawns as I reach for her hand, holding the

ring up to the light. It sparkles, looking incredibly out of place on her young hand. She isn’t that much older than me. Her hands are soft, her navy nail varnish chipped, and her nails all bitten. Surely, people ready for marriage have French manicures.

We both gape at it, hypnotized by its life-changing twinkle.

‘Brian … says it was his Granny’s,’ she says. ‘Brian Doran …’ His name sounds uncertain on her lips as if it is a trick she is playing on herself. She repeats it five times, before she falls asleep.

Brian Doran. I sit beside her, stroking her dark hair, looking

around the room. The walls are papered in band posters, and old photos, and her clothes are heaped on every possible surface. Old school books and childhood dolls fight for dominance in one corner, and dream catchers dangle from the ceiling. Her science phase is still visible on the now-abandoned desk. She sighs softly in her sleep, the ring glinting as her hand moves.

Her bed is an island in the sea of her childhood, and she is stranded on it. I tuck the duvet tighter around her, trying to imagine the kind of life promised by such a ludicrously shiny rock.

An extract from

THE FANDOM RISINGAnna DayAt midnight, I decide it’s safe. I quickly pull on a beanie, a sweater and a pair of shades. I’ve no idea how vigilant hospital Big Brother is, but I don’t fancy appearing on any CCTV footage in all my six-foot, blonde glory.

I leave my little toilet-den and walk to the ICU. It’s only about ten metres down the corridor, but I could so easily be caught. I have my excuse ready … I fell asleep on the toilet. It’s the best I could come up with, and it’s kind of true. But I reach the ICU undetected.

Adam is fast asleep by Violet’s bed, snoring in a chair. Katie’s mum is there too. I think how my parents never slept in a chair next to my bed when I was unconscious, and I feel like orphan Annie before Daddy Warbucks rocked up. My mouth fixes in a thin, determined line. I realized a long time ago, my shit parents don’t matter. My friends matter. Nate, Katie and, of course, Violet. I run my

fingers through her thick, dark waves. She looks almost sepia behind the darkened lenses of my sunglasses. I push them onto my head so I can see her in all her pale, peachy loveliness.

When we were there last time, in the world of The Gallows Dance, I gave up everything to save her. Oscar, the Gems … Willow. I gave it all up for her. And I’d do it again. In a heartbeat. I’d do anything to help her.

Even if it means hurting her.I pull a small kitchen knife from my

handbag. The blade catches in the glow from the corridor, and for a second, it looks like an angry, sharpened tooth. My stomach hurts and my chest burns, but I know I have to do this. Because if rat tattoos and bullet wounds can cross between worlds, then surely this will too.

I rest my cheek against Violet’s. ‘You remember the fandicks?’ I whisper, rolling up the sleeve on her pyjama top. ‘Well there’s one here, right now, and he’s ballsing up everything.’

I kiss her on the forehead, whisper the words forgive me into her hair, and then I set about carving the word FANBOY deep into the fleshy part of her forearm.

And then, just in case she doesn’t work it out, I carve my initial.

DESCRIPTIONFourteen-year-old Cadmus has been scholar Tullus’s slave since he was a baby – his master is the only family he knows. But when Tullus disappears and a taciturn slave called Tog – formerly a British princess – arrives with a secret message, Cadmus’s life is turned upside down. The pair follow a trail that leads to Emperor Nero himself, and his crazed determination to possess the Golden Fleece of Greek mythology. This madcap quest will push Cadmus to the edge of the Roman Empire – and reveal unexpected truths about his past …

An extract from

IN THE SHADOW OF HEROESNicholas BowlingThere was a knock at the door of the villa. Tullus whirled around in dismay.

‘Cadmus? Who is that?’‘I’m afraid the gods haven’t granted me the gift of

foresight, Master.’‘Don’t be clever with me, Cadmus. What are they

doing here? Dinner won’t be served for another hour!’

Tullus clutched at the folds of his toga and marched into the atrium, turned, marched back, then turned again and went for the door. The two slave girls sweeping the floor watched him in bewilderment.

‘Don’t just stand there,’ Tullus hissed at no one in particular. ‘Light some lamps!’ He reached the bronze door handle and stopped. ‘No, what am I thinking? Cadmus, you open it. Opening my own front door! Gods above!’

One of the slave girls brought an oil lamp, which only served to highlight the sweat beading on his master’s head. Tullus stood back, a little to the side of the pool in the middle of the atrium, and composed himself. He looked rigid as a statue.

When Cadmus eventually opened the door, the man on the other side was not a dinner guest at all. Neither were the praetorian guards who flanked him on both sides. Nobody acknowledged Cadmus as they barged noisily into the villa, the two armed

men carrying a bronze strong-box between them. Tullus’s face, which had been so ruddy moments before, was now completely colourless.

‘Greetings, Tullus,’ said the man at the front. He was wearing a toga with a purple border, a senator’s toga, but he spoke his Latin with a strong Greek accent. A foreigner. One of Cadmus’ countrymen.

His master looked like he was about to be sick. ‘Oh I … Yes. Good evening. I’m sorry the house is in such a state, if I had known you were coming I would have …’ There was a flicker of recognition between the two of them, Cadmus noticed.

The Greek man laughed. ‘Do not worry yourself, this is not a social call. Let’s be honest, Gaius, you aren’t exactly renowned for your hospitality, are you?’ Tullus tried to laugh but it just sounded like he was hacking some phlegm from the back of his throat. ‘No,’ the man continued, ‘I have actually come to bring you a gift.’

‘A gift?’‘From Emperor Nero.’The guards dropped the chest on the floor of

the atrium and it echoed coldly. Cadmus looked at it, then at the guards, then at the Greek intruder. Something wasn’t right.

‘The Emperor?’ Tullus’ face didn’t know what to do with itself. ‘What have I deserved from the, ah, Divine Caesar?’

‘Nero wants to thank you.’ ‘What for?’ The man smiled. ‘For all the fine work you are

about to do for him.’ Tullus gaped like a speared fish. Then, for the

first time, the Greek turned to look at Cadmus. ‘Dismiss this one,’ he said. ‘We have much to

discuss.’

DESCRIPTIONIt’s 1918. Lily spends her days working in a munitions factory, her nights picking metal out of her hair, and her lunchtimes kicking a ball with her workmates. Together they form a football team, the Rockets, and a league soon follows. But when the war ends, the girls lose both their jobs and their football. Not Lily. If her only chance of being a goalie is to play with the men, then that’s what she’ll do.

An extract from

LILY AND THE ROCKETSRebecca StevensOh, I remember that day. Me and Amy May lying on our backs in the grass on Plumstead Marshes, the sun on our faces and the world at our feet. We’d just left school that very day, finished forever, and we felt like anything was possible.

We were fourteen and we’d been best friends since time began.

‘What would you do, Lily Dodd,’ Amy May was saying, ‘If you could have any job in the world?’

That was easy.‘Goalkeeper,’ I said. A bird drifted silently

across the sky. It was hot – the hottest day of the year so far. I was sweating under my pinafore.

‘That’s not a job,’ said Amy. ‘Playing football. It’s a hobby. Something you do with the boys after school.’

‘It is a job,’ I said. ‘It could be. Might be.’ I leaned across and flicked her nose. ‘Is, actually.’

She squealed. ‘Ow! Is not!’‘Is!’ I said. ‘My dad used to get paid, playing

for the works team.’

‘How much?’ ‘I don’t know! It was before I was born,

when him and Mum were courting. She used to go and watch him, he said, down at the old Manor Ground. He said she liked looking at his legs. ‘

‘What did she say?’ ‘I don’t know!’ Mum had died when I was a

baby, so I didn’t know much about her. Only what Dad told me and what I could imagine from looking at the oval photograph that hung above the fireplace in the front room, with her sitting on a chair with a sort of painted ruin behind her, looking like she was trying not to laugh.

‘Sorry.’ Amy stopped as if she’d just thought of something. I rolled over onto my stomach. The grass tickled my face. I picked a feathery bit and chewed the end.

‘It’s different, though, Lil, ‘ Amy said. ‘Your dad …’

‘What about him?’ I said. ‘Your dad, Lily Dodd ... is a man.’ I sat up very straight and looked down at

her. ‘That is true,’ I said, flaring my nostrils like our old teacher at school. ‘It was true then, Amy May, and it is true now. A lot of people are men. Half the human race, in fact. Stupid!’

For some reason, this made us laugh and laugh. And when we’d stopped laughing, Amy May said: ’And you’re a girl.’

‘Yes,’ I said. ‘I am a girl. A very tall girl who is very good at football.’
