INTRODUCTION

This report summarizes the findings of an archaeologi

cal and historical survey conducted for the Southwest Florida

Water Management District to assess the cultural resources

on land that will be impacted by the construction of the

Lake Thonotosassa By-Pass Canal. Field investigation of

this tract, which measured approximately ten square miles,

was carried out by the author during November, 1976. Both

the fieldwork and preparation of this final report were

accomplished under the supervision of Dr, J. Raymond Williams,

Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of

South Florida.

SUMMARY OF RESULTS

As a result of the survey of the Lake Thonotosassa By

Pass Canal right-of-way in Hillsborough County, thirteen

aboriginal sites were located and entered into the Florida

Master Site File: the Flint Creek Site {8-Hi-427), the

Crawford Site {8-Hi-428), the Spada Grove Site {8-Hi-429),

the Ayres Grove Site {8-Hi-430), the Baker Creek Site

{8-Hi-431), the Hendry Ranch Site {8-Hi-432), the Burnett

Grove Site (8-Hi-433), the Kingsway Road Site (8-Hi-434),

the Brener Site {8-Hi-435), the Taylor Road Site {8-Hi-436),

the Bessie Dix Site {8-Hi-437), the Canal Road Site {8-Hi-438),

and the Timmons Road Site {8-Hi-439) {Figure 3). No his

torical sites were discovered.

Of these thirteen loci of past cultural activity, ten

were revealed only as areas of lithic scatter. The remain

ing three sites {8-Hi-431, 435, and 436) may tentatively be

described as village areas, based upon the recovery of both

lithics and ceramics. In general, surface collections made

at each site were not sufficient enough to enable temporal

placements or cultural affiliations. While no excavation or

preservation is recommended at this time for any of the

newly recorded sites, in the event of canal construction or

other land altering activities which threaten the existence

of these sites, and the knowledge they contain, subsurface

testing is strongly recommended. Although little is known

about the nature of occupation of each of these aboriginal

manifestations, it is felt that priority should be given to

Page 7: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA

the three village areas if future archaeological actions are

necessitated due to impact.

THE PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SETTING

The Lake Thonotosassa By-Pass Canal survey covered an

area measuring approximately ten to eleven miles long by one

mile wide. This property, situated in north central

Hillsborough County (Figure 1), encompasses the following

sections, either wholly or in part: in Township 27 South,

Range 20 East, Sections 35 and 36; Township 28 South, Range

20 East, Sections 1, 2, 11, 12, 13, 14, 20-33; and Township

29 South, Range 20 East, Sections 5 and 6 (Figure 2).

The project area is crossed by u. s. Highway 301 in the

north, and is bordered on the south by Interstate 4. Other

major means of access into the survey area include State

Roads 579 and 580, which run north/south and east/west re

spectively.

Physiographically, the survey area lies in a zone de

fined by Puri and Vernon (1964) as the Zephyrhills Gap, a

subdivision of the Gulf Coastal Lowlands. The topography is

largely gently rolling and smoothly rounded hills, remnants

of prehistoric beach ridges and sand dunes (Hillsborough

County Planning Commission 1973b:2). Elevations range from

approximately twenty feet above mean sea level in the Harney

Flats region as well as along the minor drainages, to

around eighty feet above MSL in the more hilly sections.

The survey property is part of the Hillsborough River

Basin drainage system, as classified by the U. s. Geological

Survey (Conover and Leach 1975). The Hillsborough River

marks the northeast boundary of the survey property. Other

Page 9: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA

water sources in the area of investigation include Lake

Thonotosassa, Flint Creek, Baker Creek, Pemberton Creek, and

Sixmile Creek.

Geologically, the route of the proposed Thonotosassa

By-Pass Canal lies within the St. Marks Formation of the

Tampa Stage. This Miocene age formation is composed of a

sandy, chalky limestone (Puri and Vernon 1964:125). Along

the Hillsborough River and Flint Creek exposures of the

Tampa Limestone and Hawthorne formations can be seen. These

outcroppings of chert were intensively quarried by the abor

iginal inhabitants of the region, who fashioned implements

out ·of this high grade material (Simpson 1939a:31).

The dominant soils of the project area are well drained

deep sands of the Blanton-Lakeland-Eustis association

(Leighty et al. 1958). Less extensive are the poorly drain

ed acid soils of the Rutlege-Plummer association.

Originally, longleaf pines and a few shrubs and grasses

were the principal vegetation on the well-drained deep sands.

Since the thick forests of pine have been cut, turkey and

blackjack oaks have grown (Leighty et al. 1958:3). Today,

citrus groves and improved and unimproved pasture comprise

the predominant vegetative cover.

The climate of this region is subtropical, with a mean

annual temperature of seventy-two degrees Fahrenheit. Rain

fall is unevenly distributed throughout the year, with six-·

ty percent of the annual precipitation occurring during the

summer months of June through September.

SUMMARY OF REGIONAL PREHISTORY

Due to a lack of controlled excavations and systematically

conducted surveys, coupled with a small amount of reported and

published data, little is known about the prehistory of the

archaeological region known as the Central Gulf Coast (Willey

1949) in which the survey property is situated.

In general, the prehistory of the Central Gulf Coast

region can best be summarized through a brief examination of

the sequence of cultural periods. The earliest prehistoric

manifestation is the Paleo-Indian period, dated at approxi

mately 10,000 B. c. Populations at this time were nomadic

big-game hunters, and diagnostic artifacts include lanceolate

shaped fluted points. There are no recorded Paleo-Indian

sites in the Central Gulf Coast region, although isolated

finds of projectile points have been made, uncovered largely.

as a result of dredge and fill operations on the coast, and

strip mining in the interior.

The earliest cultural period for which we have recorded

sites is the Archaic, which may be further subdivided into

Pre-Ceramic and Orange periods, dated at 6000 B. c. to 2000

B. c. and 2000 B. c. to 1000 B. C. respectively. The sub

sistence activities of these Archaic populations included

hunting and the collecting of marine foods and plants. Set

tlements were small semi-sedentary habitations. The Orange

period marked the first appearance of ceramics in the region

- thick, fiber-tempered wares. To date, our only data con

cerning settlement during the Orange period derives from sites

Page 11: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA

9

located on the coast.

According to the cultural scheme proposed by Bullen

(1965), a Transitional period, characterized by a change to

more sedentary life based upon horticulture and the develop

ment of new ceramic forms, follows the Orange period, and can

be dated at 1000 B. C. to A. D. 100. Succeeding this is the

Deptford period, characterized by further changes in settle

ment type and ceramic manufacture.

The first appearance of burial mounds marks the incep

tion of the Weeden Island period (A. D. 400 to 1300). During

this time it is presumed that the subsistence economy was

divided among marine foods, land animals and horticultural

products (Willey 1949:403). The Weeden Island period,

named after the type site in Pinellas County, represents the

most elaborate prehistoric development in Florida. Popula

tion densities were larger than in previous periods, as re

flected in the increased site size.

The last prehistoric period in the Central Gulf Coast

region is Safety Harbor, dated at approximately A. D. 1300

to 1600.. Although agriculture was practiced, marine foods

continued to be an important dietary item. In addition to

burial mounds, temple mounds were also constructed at this

time. The latter part of the Safety Harbor period coinci

ded with the movement of the Spaniards into this area, and is

evidenced by the mixture of both Spanish and aboriginal

goods in many sites.

Page 12: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA

HISTORY OF THE AREA

The establishment of Fort Brooke at the mouth of the

Hillsborough River in 1823 marks the beginning of white

settlement in the Tampa Bay area. This followed shortly

after the acquisition of Florida from Spain by the United

States in 1821. Fort Brooke, situated in the center of a

256 square mile military reservation became the United States

depot for approximately three thousand troops during the

Seminole Indian Wars of 1835 to 1842 (Grismer 1950:99).

Prior to the outbreak of hostilities, the Seminoles

had been settled in villages around the shores of Lake

Thonotosassa, and near the present day town of Plant City

(Grismer 1950:65). The wars which began in 1835 deterred

white settlement of the area (Robinson 1928:104).

The first real wave of settlement to the Tampa Bay area

was encouraged in 1842 by passage of the Armed Occupation

Act, which provided for the allotment of 160 acres of land

to settlers who promised to homestead for four years. Many

permits for homesteads were granted for land just beyond the

Fort Brooke reservation boundary line, with most of these

settlements located along the Fort Mellon or Fort King

military roads (Grismer 1950:99). During this period of

homesteading at the close of the Seminole Wars, Billy Bowlegs,

a Seminole chief, established a village a few miles south

east of Lake Thonotosassa. However, angered at the treatment

of his people by the whites, Billy Bowlegs moved his group

south to the Big Cypress in the summer of 1850, thus marking

Page 13: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA

11

the end of Indian occupation of the area (Jahoda 1973:145).

One of the biggest influences in building up the com

munity around Lake Thonotosassa was General w. P. Hazen, who

came to Florida around 1878. He immediately acquired large

land holdings along the shores of the lake, and constructed

a large estate known as Belvedere (Robinson 1928:106).

In general, there was little or no development in

Hillsborough County until the latter part of the nineteenth

century, at which time the extension of two railroad lines

into Tampa brought economic prosperity and population

growth. Also· developing at this time were the cigar and

phosphate industries. Another impetus to settlement of the

area was the Spanish American War of 1898. Port Tampa, used

as an embarkation point for the campaign in Cuba, brought

thousands of soldiers to Tampa, many of whom remained to

settle after the war (Hillsborough County Planning Commission

1973b:l4). In 1912 the present boundaries of Hillsborough

County were fixed. The encampment of troops at several

bases in this county during World War II also served·to

bring many families to the area.

According to population and housing studies conducted

by the Hillsborough County Planning Commission, in 1966,

10,868 persons inhabited census tract HC-106, of which the

survey area is a part. By the year 1985, it is projected

that 32,000 persons will reside in this area (Hillsborough

County Planning Commission 1967). Focusing on the six

square mile township and range area designated as Township

Page 14: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA

12

28 South, Range 20 East, in which most of the survey area is

included, residential development is limited to along the

major highways (Hillsborough County Planning Commission 1970:

127). The area also includes extensive orange groves.

According to regional land use plans, future growth in this

area should be limited to low density residential land use.

With the spread of urbanization, the amount of land in cit

rus groves can be expected to drop "because the soils most

suitable for citrus are also most suitable for low building

construction" (Hillsborough County Planning Commission 1973b) .

PREVIOUSLY REGISTERED SITES

A thorough search of the Florida Master site files for

Hillsborough County reveals the presence of several prehis-

toric sites within one mile of the planned Lake Thonotosassa

By-Pass Canal near Tampa. These known sites and their exact

locations, as provided in the State site files, are as

From the locational data provided, those sites listed

as numbers 1 through 7 are situated within one-half mile of

the proposed canal route (Figure 3). Since these fall with-

in the survey area, an attempt was made to relocate them, for

the purposes of assessing their present condition.

Site 8-Hi-46, a sand burial mound originally recorded

in 1952, could not be found, and is therefore believed to be

destroyed. A second sand burial mound, 8-Hi-4, could also

not be relocated, and is presumed destroyed. This sand

mound was excavated in the 1930's as part of the Works Pro-

gress Administration program under the supervision of J.

Clarence Simpson. Based upon this field investigation, the

Jones Mound, as it has been named, was dated at A. D. 100 to

A. D. 1600, or Late Weeden Island I to Safety Harbor in terms

of cultural affiliation (Simpson 1939b:25-30; Bullen 1952:

43-61).

Of the remaining previously recorded sites which are

located within one-half mile of the proposed canal, four

lithic sites, 8-Hi-305, 396, 397 and 399, are unchanged in

condition from their last visitation in 1975. At all sites

lithic materials such as implement fragments of chert and

coral as well as retouched and waste flakes, cores, and

other lithic debitage could be observed. Similarly, the con

dition of site 8-Hi-404 remained unchanged since 1975. How

ever, while ceramics were once observed and collected at

this site, only lithic materials including a chopping-scrap

ing tool of chert, other implement fragments, and flakes of

chert and coral were recovered. No ceramics were observed.

Due to the fairly extensive areal distribution of the cul

tural materials, the previous collection of po·ttery at this

locality, and the site's proximity to a known burial mound

dated to the Weeden Island and Safety Harbor periods, if

site 8-Hi-404 is threatened by impact in the future, it is

recommended that subsurface testing be carried out to more

accurately assess the nature and extent of this manifestation,

which could possibly represent a prehistoric village area.

Similarly, since so little is known about sites defined as

"areas of lithic scatter", it is further recommended that

if threatened by construction of the canal, the four pre-

Page 18: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA

viously recorded lithic sites also be archaeologically

tested.

16

SURVEY METHODOLOGY

The bulk of the field survey was carried out during the

week of November 15 through November 21. While the author

served as principal field investigator, throughout the

course of the survey project several graduate and undergrad

uate students at the University of South Florida volunteered

their time to accompany me in the field. On the average,

however, the survey team was composed of only two indivi

duals - one volunteer plus myself - on each day of field

investigation.

In terms of overall strategy, the archaeological and

historical survey was initiated in the northern portion of

the project area, just below the Hillsborough River, and

progressed in a southerly direction from the eastern shore

of Lake Thonotosassa to the terminus at Sixmile Creek.

The actual survey procedure varied with the type of

terrain encountered as well as the type of vegetative cover.

However, in all sections, one basic strategy remained the

same. Before any land was walked off to check for sites,

an attempt was made to ascertain the owner of the property

in question by calling at the nearest residence. In addi

tion to requesting permission to walk upon privately owned

land, residents were also queried as to their knowledge of

aboriginal sites in the area, and to the existence of per

sonal artifact collections. In some cases, artifacts were

examined, and drawings made. Throughout the survey the

property owners and their neighbors were found to be most

Page 20: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA

18

cooperative.

A large portion of the survey area was planted with cit

rus trees. In groves that had recently been disced, ground

surface visibility was optimal and the detection of material

evidences of former prehistoric occupation was made easier.

In these sections, survey was conducted by walking up and

down the rows of trees until adequate coverage was accom

plished. When cultural materials were present, thereby in

dicating a site, the surrounding area was intensively checked

for the purposes of fixing the boundaries of the site and

for delimiting the area of material concentration. In

groves which had not been disced recently, and where weeds

impaired ground visibility, the same strategy of walking

between rows was employed. Due to the heavy plant growth,

it was much more difficult to detect sites in these areas.

In pastures and wooded zones an attempt was made to

visually inspect an adequate portion of the property. In

general, all exposed areas such as jeep trails, cow paths,

eroded pond banks, paths and borrow areas were intensively

checked for sites, since these afforded the most promising

conditions for site detection.

In addition to looking for previously unrecorded sites,

an attempt was also made to reexamine all those archaeologi

cal and historical sites already registered with the State

Division of Archives whose location fell within the survey

area.

Sites were revealed on the basis of surface examination

Page 21: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA

only. Due to the scope of the survey project, and also to

the private nature of ownership of the land on which all of

the sites were discovered, no subsurface testing was done.

At each site found, a surface collection of cultural ma

terial was made. Site location data was recorded and aerial

as well as topographic maps were marked with the position

of the newly discovered sites. Data needed for completion

19

of the Florida Master Site File forms was also gathered. All

materials recovered in the field were brought to the Univer

sity of South Florida archaeology lab for cleaning and

analysis.

DESCRIPTION OF SITES

8-Hi-427 Flint Creek Site NE \ of SE \ of SW \ of Section 1, T28S, R20E

The Flint Creek Site is an area of lithic scatter located

approximately 400 feet east of Flint Creek at an elevation of

forty feet above mean sea level. The main concentration of

lithic materials is in a small citrus grove. However, chert

flakes and other lithic debitage was also noted in a small

area of fine white sand to the east of the grove and to the

immediate west of a large borrow area. No materials were re-

covered in the borrow area itself. The site area is estimated

as one acre in extent.

In total, one coral projectile point (Figure 4b), one

graver of gray chert (Figure 4a), 2 waste core fragments,

3 retouched chert flakes, plus 71 waste flakes of coral and

chert were collected at the Flint Creek Site.

Due to the scanty and undiagnostic lithic materials

gathered, it is difficult to assign a temporal position or

cultural classification with any degree of accuracy. Based

upon the projectile point found - a medium sized stemmed

point with excurvate blade, drooping barbs and contracting

and rounded tang (cf. Culbreath type, Bullen 1975:28) a ten-

tative date of 3000 to 1000 B. C., or Late Archaic, is

assigned.

At present, the cultivation of this grove has not de

stroyed the integrity of the site, which appears to be in

fair condition. However, if threatened by major land alteration,

Page 23: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA
Page 24: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA

22

it is recommended that the Flint Creek Site be archaeologically

tested, to provide more adequate data as to the nature and

duration of occupation. Preservation or excavation is not

recommended at this time.

8-Hi-428 Crawford Site SW ~ of NE ~ of Section 1, T28S, R20E

The Crawford Site is an extensive area of lithic scatter

located in a citrus grove approximately one-half mile east of

Flint Creek, and adjacent to a large wooded swamp. Knights

Griffin Road marks the southern periphery of the site. Gen

eral site elevation is forty feet above MSL.

Recent discing of this grove has exposed a widespread

distribution of lithic materials that have no apparent con-

centration. In total, 4 scrapers (Figure 4d), 1 blade, 4

retouched flakes and approximately 150 waste flakes were

collected at this site. No projectile points or other im-

plements were observed, although the owner of the property,

Mr. J. L. Crawford, reported finding large projectile points,

axes, and other lithic tools in his grove. None of these

materials were available for examination.

Due to the absence of projectile points, ceramics, or

other datable materials, it is impossible to assign a tern-

poral position or cultural classification to this site. No

further archaeological action such as preservation or excava~

tion is recommended. However, if threatened by land alteration

other than cultivation, subsurface testing is advised.

8-Hi-429 Spada Grove Site SW \ of NE \ of NW \ of Section 1, T28S, R20E

The Spada Grove Site is an area of lithic scatter loca-

ted in the southwest corner of a citrus grove approximately

200 feet east of Flint Creek. A thickly wooded zone separates

the site from the creek, and the Aulabaug home marks the

southern periphery of the site. General site elevation is

forty feet above MSL.

According to Mrs. Aulabaug, before her yard was planted

with grass a fair amount ~f lithic materials were observed

in this area. Projectile points and other chipped stone arti-

facts were also reported from the grove. As a result of my

surface examinations, an area of concentrated lithic scatter,

measuring approximately 400 feet north/south by 500 feet

east/west could be delineated in the southwestern corner of

the Spada grove. A light scatter of flakes, which extended

1200 feet north along a jeep trail which fronted a treeline

to the direct west of the grove, was also observed. Cul-

tural materials recovered included one possible implement

fragment of chert, 8 retouched flakes, plus 145 unretouched

waste flakes.

Although disturbed by discing, the Spada Grove Site is

in fair condition. Unless threatened by major alteration,

no further archaeological actions are recommended. Due to

the limited nature of the materials recovered no cultural

affiliation or date can be assigned to this area of past

cultural activity.

8-Hi-430 Ayres Grove Site NW ~of NE ~of SE ~of Section 14, T28S, R20E

The Ayres Grove Site is an area of light lithic scatter

situated in a citrus grove at a distance of approximately .3

miles south of Lake Thonotosassa and .3 miles west of Baker

Creek. The site measures approximately 600 feet north/south

by 300 feet east/west. General site elevation is sixty feet

above MSL.

Mrs. Alvis, who resides due north of the site, reported

that after discing, projectile points and other lithic arti-

facts and debris have been uncovered here. The surface col-

lection made at the site, as part of the survey, included

2 possible implement fragments of chert, and 67 unretouched

waste flakes. Due to this scanty and undiagnostic cultural

material, no date could be assigned to this site. Excava-

tion or preservation is not recommended. However, since the

Ayres Grove Site is still apparently in fair condition, if

development threatens site integrity, subsurface testing is

advised.

8-Hi-431 Baker Creek Site SW ~of SE ~of SW ~of Section 13, T28S, R20E

The Baker Creek Site is a possible village area which

extends, in a westerly direction, from an area of fine white

sand devoid of vegetation, situated approximately 1000 feet

east of Baker Creek, to the western border of a citrus grove.

Estimated areal extent of the site is 400 feet north/south

by 600 feet east/west. Average elevation is fifty feet above

MSL.

Page 27: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA

25

In the small sand exposure a large scraper-chopping tool

of coral was recovered, as well as one waste core and several

chert and coral .flakes. In the grove immediately to the west,

a small number of flakes were gathered, in addition to one

bodysherd of St. Johns type pottery.

Due to the presence of ceramics, the Baker Creek Site

may represent a prehistoric village area. If so, the excava-

tion of this site can add greatly to our knowledge of abori

ginal settlement during the post-Archaic period. It is re~

commended that subsurface testing be conducted to help ascer-

tain the extent and nature of the Baker Creek Site. If

testing indicates that the integrity of the site is good,

then later excavation or preserva~on is further recommended.

8-Hi-432 Hendry Ranch Site W~ of SE \ of NW \ of Section 13, T28S, R20E

The Hendry Ranch Site is an extensive area of lithic

scatter, located in the western end of a citrus grove. Lake

Thonotosassa is situated 1800 feet to the west. General

site elevation is fifty feet above MSL.

The concentration of lithic materials recovered from the

Hendry Ranch Site were eroding out of a large exposure of

fine white sand devoid of citrus trees. This strip runs

north/south for approximately 1400 feet and measures about

300 feet on its east/west axis. This exposed zone parallels

a jeep trail which marks the western periphery of the grove.

Among the cultural materials collected were 1 large

utilized flake of chert, one bifacially retouched implement

Page 28: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA

26

fragment of chert (probable knife), 6 retouched flakes, 1

waste core, and 82 unretouched waste flakes. In addition to

these materials which were gathered from the sand exposure,

a slight amount of lithic debris was observed in the south

east portion of the grove, just north of s. R. 580. Thus, it

appears that cultural materials are widely scattered, and the

areal extent of the Hendry Ranch Site is difficult to approxi-

mate.

There are insufficient materials to assign a cultural

affiliation or temporal position to this site. It appears

that cultivation and erosion present the only disturbances

at present. If threatened by major land alteration, it is

recommended that the Hendry Ranch Site be tested for subsur-

face features and other archaeological evidences of past

cultural activity. Excavation or preservation is not recom-

mended at this time.

8-Hi-433 Burnett Grove Site NE ~of NW ~of SE ~of Section 23, T28S, R20E

The Burnett Grove Site is a small area of lithic scatter

observed as eroding out of a sand roadway, which separates a

grove, to the west, from a zone of shrubs and hardwoods to

the east. This wooded area fronts a small stream to the

east. Estimated areal extent of the site is 300 feet north/

south by 250 feet east/west. East/west parameters are dif

ficult to estimate due to the heavy vegetative cover which

hampers ground visibility, and thus, the detection of cul-

tural materials. During the surface examination, no lithics

Page 29: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA

27

or other materials were recovered from either the grove or

the area of shrubs and hardwoods.

In total, 2 broken projectile point bases (Figure 4e and

f), 1 retouched flake and 10 unretouched waste flakes were

collected at the Burnett Grove Site. One projectile point

of white chert showed evidence of reworking along one edge

(Figure 4f) . Both points were too fragmentary for proper

type identification.

Due to the disturbance by vehicle passage, the Burnett

Grove site appears to be in a deteriorated condition. No

further archaeological work, therefore, is recommended. How-

ever, if threatened by major land alteration or development,

limited subsurface testing and coring is advised.

8-Hi-434 Kingsway Road Site NE ~of SE ~of SW ~of Section 23, T28S, R20E

The Kingsway Road Site is an area of lithic scatter

measuring approximately 200 feet north/south by 250 feet

east/west in areal extent. It is situated in an exposed area

of fine white sand, which is bordered on the south by

Kingsway Road and to the north by a small citrus grove.

General site elevation is fifty feet above MSL.

According to Mr. Paul Brener and his brother Richard

who resides nearby on Pruitt Road, the Kingsway Road Site

is a popular spot for local collectors, who have found pro-

jectile points, drills, axes and other tools of chipped

stone here. As a result of our surface collection the tip

of a small drill, 1 retouched flake, plus 33 unretouched

Page 30: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA

28

waste flakes were the only materials observed and recovered.

These had been exposed by erosion.

Since these lithic materials were gathered very close to

Kingsway Road, it appears that the construction of this

thoroughfare has destroyed the southern portion of the site.

No artifacts or other cultural debris were noted in the grove

to the north of the exposure. Due to its deteriorated state,

and the presence of only limited cultural materials, no exca-

vation or preservation is recommended. However, in view of

the variety of artifacts collected here in the past, none of

which were available for study, it is suggested that subsur

face testing be conducted in the event of future development

to help ascertain the nature of aboriginal occupation at the

Kingsway Road Site, as well as provide a temporal position

for this settlement.

8-Hi-435 Brener Site NW ~ of SE ~ of NW ~ of Section 26, T28S, R20E

The existence of this site was reported by the property

owner, Mr. Richard D. Brener. According to this informant,

numerous projectile points, drills, axes and other lithic

tools were recovered from the grove in back of his house,

after the area had been disced. Between the house and the

grove ceramics were also uncovered, as a result of digging

by the family dog.

The entire grove and pasture which adjoins it to the

west were walked over and searched closely for surface indi-

cations of aboriginal occupation. Only 2 chert flakes were

Page 31: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA

29

observed in the western border of the grove, next to a fence

line which separates the grove from a pasture. This absence

of cultural materials could be due to the heavy ground cover

in both the grove and pasture, which obscured ground visibil

ity.

Unfortunately, most of Mr. Brener's collection, including

all of the ceramics, are in the possession of his son, who no

longer resides at home. Thus, only a fragment of the collection

was available for examination. This included 1 chert projec

tile point of the Archaic Stemmed type (Bullen 1975:32) and

one basally notched chert projectile point of the Citrus type

(Bullen 1975:25). These are dated by Ripley Bullen at 5000

to 1000 B. C. and 400 B. C. to A. D. 400 respectively. Al

though no pottery was available for study, some of this ware

was described as of buff color, with an incised geometric

design. Based upon these materials it is believed that the

Brener Site was probably occupied by several populations over

a large span of time. A tentative temporal range of 5000 B. c.

to A. D. 1600 is thereby assigned, inclusive of the Middle

Archaic to Safety Harbor periods.

If impacted by the construction of the Lake Thonotosassa

By-Pass Canal, or other major form of land alteration, subsur

face testing is strongly advised. Since the integrity of the

site is not seriously threatened at this time, no further

archaeological work is recommended.

8-Hi-436 Taylor Road Site NE ~ of SW ~ of SE ~ of Section 22, T28S, R20E

The Taylor Road Site is an extensive area of lithic scat-

ter, possibly representing an aboriginal village area, which

is located in a citrus grove 1000 feet south of the proposed

Lake Thonotosassa By-Pass Canal route. Lithic materials

were observed as eroding out of a tan and white sand matrix

in the northern section of the grove. The area was largely

vegetated with recently plante'd young citrus trees. The ter

rain is flat and the general site elevation is fifty feet

above MSL.

Conversation with a local informant revealed that the

Taylor Road site is a popular locality for pothunters and

collectors. As a result of our surface examination, l plain,

sand-tempered bodysherd, l utilized core, l blade, 16 re-

touched flakes and 294 unretouched waste flakes were collected.

The area in which these materials were concentrated measured

approximately 600 feet north/south by 900 feet east/west.

Due to the presence of ceramics, the Taylor Road Site

may be assigned a post-Archaic date of from roughly 1000 B. c.

to A. D. 1600. Sand-tempered plain wares had a widespread

distribution in both time and space, and thus provide poor

dating criteria as well as unreliable indicators as to cul-

tural affiliation.

In view of our general paucity of knowledge concerning

aboriginal settlement in this area, in the event of future

impact, subsurface testing at this site is strongly recom-

Page 33: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA

31

mended for the purposes of revealing subsurface features,

defining stratigraphy, and providing additional cultural

materials. No excavation or preservation is recommended at

this time.

8-Hi-437 Bessie Dix Road Site SE \ of NW \ of SE \ of Section 21, T28S, R20E

The Bessie Dix Road Site is a small area of lithic scatter

located in a citrus grove which is bordered by a cemetery on

the west, a sand road to the north, and Bessie Dix Road to

the south. The proposed route of the By-Pass Canal is approx

imately 800 feet south of the site. General elevation is

forty feet above MSL.

Separating this orange grove from the small cemetery is

a sand road. Here, several waste flakes were recovered.

These lithic materials continued to be observed in the first

several rows of trees in the grove, moving east. In total,

only 29 unretouched waste flakes were collected.

Due to the scanty amount of cultural materials, no fur-

ther archaeological work is recommended at this site. How-

ever, in the event of future land altering development, sub-

surface testing is suggested.

8-Hi-438 Canal Road Site SW \ of NW \ of SW \ of Section 21, T28S, R20E

The Canal Road Site is an area of lithic scatter observed

as eroding out of a sand roadway, which is heavily traveled

by trucks on their way to and from a sanitary landfill area

Page 34: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA

32

a short distance to the west. Lithic materials were also

observed as extending north of this road, in a sand path

which bisects a citrus grove. Due to varying degrees of

ground cover, no cultural materials were noted on the proper-

ty south of the road, or between the overgrown rows of cit-

rus trees to the north. The areal extent of the Canal Road

Site is estimated at 300 feet north/south by 250 feet east/

west. General site elevation is 50 feet above MSL. The

terrain gently slopes northward from the road to the grove.

Among the total surface collection were 1 possible im-

plement fragment, 3 retouched flakes and 42 unretouched waste

flakes. Most of these materials were recovered in the most

deteriorated portion of the site, that is, along the sand

roadway. Frequency of lithic materials decreased as one

walked north.

Due to the disturbed nature of this site, and to the

relative paucity of materials observed and/or collected, ex-

cavation or preservation is not warranted. However, if

threatened by construction of the canal, it is recommended

that test units be excavated in the less disturbed areas to

the north and south of the road, for the purposes of delimit

ing the areal extent of the site, and for providing data as

to the nature and period of aboriginal settlement.

8-Hi-439 Timmons Road Site NE ~of NE ~of SE ~of Section 20, T28S, R20E

The Timmons Road Site is a small area of lithic scatter

Page 35: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA

33

located in a citrus grove which borders Timmons Road on the

west. South of the site is a large sanitary landfill area.

To the east, on.the other side of Timmons Road, is another

grove. No cultural materials were observed here. Areal

extent of the site is estimated as 100 feet north/south by

50 feet east/west. General elevation is seventy feet above

MSL.

The only materials recovered as a result of our sur

face examination were 26 unretouched waste flakes. Based

upon this evidence it is impossible to assign a temporal

position or cultural affiliation. While no excavation or

preservation is recommended at this time, in the event of

future impact, subsurface testing is advised.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

As a result of this survey effort, thirteen previously

unrecorded prehistoric sites were discovered within one-half

mile of the proposed Lake Thonotosassa By-Pass canal, and en

tered into the State inventory of sites for Hillsborough

County. These sites have been designated as numbers 8-Hi-427

through 8-Hi-439. Of these thirteen loci of past cultural

activity, ten are areas of lithic scatter and three are pos

sible village areas. All were located either in or near a

citrus grove.

Of the ten areas of lithic scatter, four are presently

in fair condition and six in a deteriorated state. Cultiva

tion represents the major threat to site integrity, with

erosion and vehicular travel of secondary concern. Little

or nothing is known of the temporal position or cultural

affiliation of these sites. In previously conducted surveys

in Hillsborough County (Browning 1975; Hemmings 1974, 1975;

Martin 1976; Padgett 1974) areas of lithic scatter have been

the most frequently recorded type of site. In some cases,

based upon the absence of ceramics, these have been labeled

as temporary campsites inhabited during Archaic times. How

ever, these assessments, usually derived from surface exam

ination only, may not most accurately represent the temporal

position and nature of occupation of these aboriginal mani

festations. The general paucity of our data base and resul

tant low level of understanding of the prehistoric peoples

who inhabited the Central Gulf Coast region, brings into

Page 37: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA

sharp focus the need for scientifically controlled excava

tion at these sites.

35

In surveys such as those noted above, it is common

practice to carry out some form of subsurface testing, in

addition to making a surface collection of cultural materials.

These subsurface probes often provide the survey archaeolo

gist with additional data, and help to strengthen the recom

mendations made concerning the need for future archaeological

work, such as excavation or preservation. Due to the fact

that this survey did not require subsurface testing, and also

due to the private nature of land ownership along the pro

posed canal right-of-way, subsurface testing was not carried

out. As a result, our present understanding of the nature

of settlement at each of the ten areas of lithic scatter, as

well as the three village areas, is rather limited. There

fore, in view of the absence of subsurface testing during

the survey, and the potential this type of examination offers

for further insights into aboriginal settlements, it is now

recommended that for all thirteen sites, such subsurface

probes be conducted if site integrity (integrities) is (are)

threatened by major land alteration or development, such as

construction of the Lake Thonotosassa By-Pass Canal. At

those sites assessed to be in a deteriorated condition, the

use of a coring device will suffice for this subsurface

testing. At those other sites currently in a fair state,

it is suggested that a number of thoughtfully distributed,

small test units be excavated.

Page 38: Archaeological and Historical Survey of the Lake ... · AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SURVEY OF THE LAKE THONOTOSASSA BY-PASS CANAL RIGHT-OF-WAY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA

36

Since the majority of newly recorded sites in the canal

right-of-way are currently on lands planted with citrus

trees, where cultivation represents the only form of distur

bance, it is not anticipated that such land alteration com

pletely threatens the existence of the sites. Therefore,

unless the status of land utilization changes, thereby

threatening the sites, no further actions, such as excava

tion or preservation, are warranted. The same recommendations

apply to those five previously recorded sites located within

one-half mile of the proposed canal route, which are still

intact. Only in the event of future impact is mitigation,

i.e. subsurface testing, recommended.

,..--------------Remnrks & Rccommr.ndations: Although the citrus grove in which the majority of cultural materials were gathered has been disced, this activity has not completely destroyed the integrity of the site, If threatened by alteration other than cultivation, it is recommended that subsurface testing be conducted to delimit the areal extent of the site, to reveal subsurface features if present, and 'to provide additional cultural materials so that a more refined temporal and/ or cultural classification may be asce-rtained,

The Flint Creek Site is revealed as an area of lithic scatter which is concentrated in the center of a small (approx. 15 rows) citrus grove, and which appears to extend into a small exposed area of sand ·devoid of trees or shrubs. This sand exposure is approximately 25 yards west of a large borrow pit.

Remarks & Recommendations: Mrs, Alvis, a local resident, reported finding many artifacts of chipped stone in this grove, usually after the grove had been disced, In the event of future disturbance, it is recommended that subsurface testing be conducted to ascertain the areal extent and functional nature of this site, as well as to recover cultural materials which may provide a cultural classification and/or temporal position,

Present & Original Physical Appeareance (use continuation sheet if necessary)

Concentration of lithic materials was quite limited, Failure to observe or recover a larger sample of cultural materials may be rebated to the poor degree of ground visibility, Grove has not been disced lately, and grasses and weeds have grown up between the rows, No flakes or chips were collected south of the small sand jeep trail or roadway which separated portions of the grove,

Remarks & Recommendations: Due to ;£ta exposed nature, the Hendry Ranch Site appears to be largely deteriorated, Thus, in view of this disturbance, as well as relatively scant and undiagnostic surface evidence, no further archaeological work is recommended. However, since nothing is known about the nature of occupation of this site, its temporal position, or cultural affiliation, in the event of future development, other than cultivation, subsurface testing is strongly recommended.

Present & Original Physical Appeareance (use continuation sheet if necessary)

The major concentration of lithic materials· were observed as eroding out of a large sand exposure in the western portion of the Hendry grove. This area of lithic scatter was quite extensive, with a small number of flakes and chips also noted in the southeast corner of the grove, just north of State Road 580. Only a limited number of flakes and chips were collected from between the recently disced rows of citrus trees,

Present & Original Physical Appeareance (use continuation sheet if necessary)

The Burnett Grove Site was revealed as a small area of lithic scatter in a sand roadway, which separates a citrus grove from a zone of shrubs and hardwoods. Due to the passage of trucks, this site has been greatly disturbed. It is probable that the site area extends further to the east and/ or west, but dense vegetation to either side of the roadway obscures ground, and thus, site visibility.

Remarks & Recommendations: The Kingsway Road Site is known to have yielded a large amount of lithic tools in the past, Few materials were exposed on the surface at the time of our examination and collection, While it is probable that erosion has destroyed the context of this site, it is recommended that subsurface testing be conducted to determine whether any subsurface features are present, and to delimit the site parameters, This testing is suggested in the event of future development or other major impact, Excavation is not recommended at this time.

Pre·sent & Original Physical Appeareance (use continuation sheet if necessary)

This site is revealed as a small area o£ lithic scatter situated in a flat, fine white sand exposure, devoid of trees, grass, shrubs or weeds, Kingsway Road is directly to the south of the site, and probably once marked the southern extent of it. Due to the absence of vegetation, the site has been badly eroded, and is further deteriorated by the collecting activities of local pothunters.

Remarks & Recommendations: Based upon the large variety of cultural materials recovered by Mr, Brener and his family ** , the Brener Site was probably the locus of aboriginal settlement from the Middle Archaic through the Safety Harbor periods, and may have served, through time, as both hunting camp and village areas, Due to the multi-component nature of this site, subsurface testing is strongly recommended, in the event that the site is

~ .• 4tmpacted by canal construction or other land altering development,

**Mr. Brener has made quite a collection of artifacts over the years, bu but has given most away to bj 8 goo I Therefore, only a fe:w projectile 835=:;;:

Major Bibliographic Referen.ces: points were availabfe for examination, including one Citrus type, one Florida Archaic Stemmed, plus several others which could bot be identified as to type. Although no ceramics were available for study, the majority of these were described by Mr. Brener as buff color, with geometric incised decoration,

Present & Original Physical Appeareance (use continuation sheet if necessary)

The concentration of lithic materials was reported by Mr, Brener to have been in the acreage now planted with orange trees, In the past, discing has revealed numerous points, drills, axes and other tools, In back of the house is a small shed, It was between the house and this structure that ceramics were recovered, at a depth of approximately two feet,

To the south of the grove is a large borrow area, To the west of the grove is a small pasture, which is bordered on the north by a huge chicken house, No cultural materials were observed in either of these areas.

Remorks & Recommendations: The Taylor Road Site may represent a village area which was occupied by. aboriginal peoples sometime after the close of the Archaic period (circa 1000 B, C, ) , As such, this site should be tested by use of either a coring device or the excavation of small test units, only if threatened by construction of the canal, or other major land alterations.

Present & Original Physical Appeareance (use continuation sheet if necessary)

This site is revealed largely as an extensive area of lithic scatter located in the northern portion of a citrus grove, The area in which the majority of cultural materials were recovered has recently been planted with new trees, Thus, the area appears as an exposure of sand marked by a few young orange tr~es, Apparently before planting this area remained as an exposed section for a while, and has therefore experienced considerable erosion.

Lithic scatter was noted as far north as the sandy jeep trail which s,eparates the grove from a neighboring pasture, To the east, flakes and other lithic debris were gathered to as far as fifty feet west of Taylor Road,

Remarks & Recommendations: If impacted by construction of the Lake Thonotosassa By-Pass Canal, or oth(Olr major land alteration, subsurface testing is recommended for the purposes of delimiting the areal extent of the site, as well as for providing data as to the nature and period of aboriginal settlement, This testing should focus on the less disturbed portions of the site immediately to the south and north of the road,

Present & Original Physical Appeareance (use continuation sheet if necessary)

Gultural materials were first observed as eroding out of a sand roadway which is heavily traveled and thus disturbed by the passageoof large trucks to and from the sanitary landfill area, a short distance west of the site, Lithic materials were also observed in the sandy path which runs perpendicular to the roadway, and bisects a citrus grove to the north, This grove slopes gently to the north, No cultural materials were observed in the grove proper, possible as a result u£ obscuring ground cover.

Present & Original Physical Appeareance (use continuation sheet if necessary)

Cultural materials were recovered in a small portion of grove only, No flakes or other lithic deqris was noted in Timmons Road, a sand thoroughfare, or in the grove directly east of the road, Piles of garbage lined both sides of the road,

To the south is a large sanitary landfill area which, according to aerial photos used in the survey, has recently expanded northward into property which was formerly planted with citrus trees, The northern border of this borrow area is approximately 3oo feet south of the site,
