A New Year’s Vision for You…

As we enter into this New Year, the media continues to bombard us with messages of gloom

and doom of the “current global economic crisis”. I have developed my own “Recovery

Package” that I would like to invite you to consider.

Love More, Live More, Give More, Breathe More, Forgive More LOVE MORE: John 15:12-14

This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. [13] No one has

greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. [14] You are my friends if you

do what I command you.

A fear driven Culture drives people to circle the wagons and increasingly focus on them-

selves. As People of Victory we are called to be the counterculture and live like no one else.

Just as Christ came to love us in complete obedience and selflessness, we are called and

commanded by Christ to go against the grain of Culture and do the same. Turning outward

instead of inward gives us a new perspective and a greater hope.

LIVE MORE: John 10:10

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it

abundantly.

The fear mongers of our culture are working aggressively to capitalize on your anxiety in

every way possible. Jesus Christ gives us power over life and death itself. With great power

comes great responsibility to live as a victorious people in the face of a Culture that is be-

coming increasingly rooted in news of defeat. When you believe that this life is all we have

and that there is nothing else it’s easy to become overcome by the frenzy of fear being mass

marketed by the media and financial forecasters.

GIVE MORE: Mark 12:42-44

One poor widow came up and put in two small coins—a measly two cents. [43] Jesus called

his disciples over and said, "The truth is that this poor widow gave more to the collection

than all the others put together. [44] All the others gave what they'll never miss; she gave

extravagantly what she couldn't afford—she gave her all."

God’s People need to be “all in” when it comes to sharing the Gospel and meeting the needs

of least, last and lost of our world. Generosity in a time of scarcity is a radical statement of

faith and trust that God will indeed provide. It is putting feet and hands to your faith. Also,

we give, not because of what we can get or what God will do for us, we give in response to

what God has already done for us through Jesus Christ. Our giving is an act of gratitude for

our salvation.

ARCHDALE UNTIED METHODIST CHURCH

SAFE SANCTUARIES BASIC ESSENTIAL OPERATING PROCEDURES

Implement a policy for recruiting, screening, hiring, and regular training youth and children’s staff and volunteer

workers. Criminal background checks as well as previous employment and all references must be checked for those in supervisory capacities with children and youth including but not limited to paid staff. All adults driv-ing church vehicles must submit a valid driver’s license to the church office to be cleared by our insurance company and added to the list of approved drivers.

Two adults: Two adults must be in the room or vehicle at all times. No child or youth should be alone with one

adult at any time. Age Limits: Staff and volunteers should be at least 5 years older than the oldest child/youth being supervised if

alone. No one under the age of 18 should be given supervisory capacity. 4. Visibility in Rooms: Every room that is used for activities and teaching of children and youth should have a

window in the door that gives visibility to all areas of that room. The window must be left uncovered. If there is no window, the door must be left open at all times. The entry door to the bathrooms on the children’s hall must remain open during all times when children’s activities are going on in that area.

Open Door Counseling: Pastoral counseling is expected to be confidential in nature, but it is for the Protection

of both parties that such sessions take place where other people are nearby even though not within hearing distance. The pastor’s study should have a small glass window in it.

Roving Monitors: We will plan to have a roving monitor present during any event with children or youth First Aid and CPR: Training events will be offered annually to certify those who work with children and youth.

First Aid Kits will be located in designated areas throughout the church and these locations will be publicized. Communication and Advance Notice to Parents: Parents should always be kept abreast of the programs their

children or youth are involved in, and be given advance notice and information regarding any activity which deviates from the traditional classroom instruction offered at the church during Sunday School, UMYF, Vaca-tion Bible School, or other regular activities at the church. Permission forms with medical information should accompany children/youth for any activity involving travel or extreme sports activity (skiing, etc.) These forms must be notarized. A “Safe Sanctuary” training time will be held for all parents/guardians and copies of this policy will be available.

Age and Activity Appropriate Equipment: All nurseries, classrooms, youth rooms and designated areas used

by children and youth will be examined on a regular basis to check safety, cleanliness, and appropriateness of equipment.

Maintain Adequate Liability Insurance Coverage: Policy checked on a regular basis for awareness of what cov-

erage is available for activities held on and off the premises and what coverage is held for sexual misconduct. Trustees should keep Safe Sanctuary Committee aware of any changes to this coverage.

Designated Spokesperson: A designated spokesperson will be chosen by the Church Council to respond in

case of incident or allegation of abuse. A statement prepared by the Board of Trustees with legal guidance should be in place before releasing any information to the press. All other persons at the church must refrain from speaking to the press.

Chairperson: Arch Hamilton (336) 434-4179 Revised: JAN 2006

Your New Years Resolution…….What is It?

The top ten New Years resolutions are: Lose Weight, Stop Smoking, Stop Drinking, Go Back to School, Spend Time with Family, Take a Trip,

Work on Spiritual Growth, Pay off Debt, Get a Better Job, and Try Something New.

(cont. from cover page)

BREATHE MORE: John 20:22

When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.

Stress management professionals, therapists and counselors, physicians, personal trainers and even preachers

know the importance of proper breathing. Slowing down, breathing deeply, getting focused. It facilitates healing

of the mind, the body and the spirit. No wonder, our breath comes from God. The very Spirit of God is referred

to in the scriptures as Ru hah, or breath. Amidst of the confusion of the misinformation that constantly

bombards us, the only way to clarity is by centering on Truth, the Holy Spirit in us!

FORGIVE MORE: John 20:23

If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.

Perhaps the most challenging of all, especially in a post election year. Last year our nation was more bitterly

divided by politics that had been seen in most of our lifetimes. Casting blame and aspersions on others has

become a national pastime. Hating others for their choices, indiscretions and sins requires copious amounts of

energy and wastes huge amounts of personal resources. Through Christ we are given the awesome power of

being able to restore people to right relationships with themselves, each other, us and God. We also have the

same power to keep people oppressed and downtrodden by their mistakes.

My prayer for you is a happier, healthier more hopeful new year. If you have found that the life you have been

living is less than satisfactory, you just might want to check yourself on how you are doing in these five areas.

Our failure to become countercultural Christians can not only destroy us from the inside out, it can cripple those

around us and add to the chaos in our world.

Dana

Dear Church Family,

Thank you for the many kind expressions of sympathy during the re-

cent death of Annie W. Sprinks, our beloved mother, grandmother,

and great-grandmother. We sincerely appreciate the cards, food and

memorials that have been sent. Your love and prayers have helped

us through this time.

To the Members of Archdale UMC:

Please accept this letter as our thanks on behalf of the families that you were able to sponsor during the Christmas

season, that have children who attend Archdale Elementary School. We were blessed again this year by many local

churches and agencies that called to offer their support and were honored that you were able to help us fill a great

need! Through the generous support of 6 Sunday School classes, you provided Christmas for 13 children!

Again, thank you for your many blessings now and throughout the entire school year and we hope you have a Merry

Christmas and Happy New Year!

AUMC Staff News

In January of 2007, Marilyn Holtham our Director of Lay Ministry, retired from her position. This

position remained unfilled through this calendar year. The Staff Parish Relations Committee had

several conversations throughout the year about this and other issues and discerned a need to make

some changes to this position and fill it in 2009.

The new position is entitled Director of Discipleship. The purpose of this position is to lead us in the

growth of our congregation, help individuals find connections with the ministry of our church, and

reach out to members of the congregation who have become disconnected from our ministry. Concern

has been raised about hiring a new staff position during this difficult economy. It is important to know

that we are not adding a position but simply filling a position that has been vacant this last year. In

addition, we believe that as this position helps grow the church, we will also be growing the financial

support of the church. The addition of just two new families in our church will more than pay for this

position.

The Staff Parish Relations Committee would like to announce that, effective February 1, 2009, Cheryl

Traylor will fill the position of Director of Discipleship for our church. The committee would like to

thank all those who expressed interest in this ministry. We feel that Cheryl will be an effective leader

in implementing this position to help with the growth of the church. We hope that you will share in

our excitement as we start the New Year off on a positive note.
