SCHOOL OF ART, DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE
Welcome to one of the nest institutions of higher
education in the United States and the school that
is doing extraordinary work in the disciplines of
art, design and architecture within the context of
Christian community. We hope that you will nd
the following pages of this unique view book an
indication of the mission of this special place, a
Christ-centered community of architects, artists
and designers, who are taught to appreciate diver-
sity, embrace critical and creative excellence, devel-
op the visual and spatial imagination, and model
stewardship and hope in service to local and global
communities.
ARCHITECTURE PROGRAM There are 150+ professional architecture programs
in the US, and remarkably, at 30,000 feet they all
look more or less the same. But Judson is dierent
than every other school in ve signicant ways.
1) FAITH-BASED CONTEXT FOR ARCHITECTURE
STUDIES. Judson is one of a small handful of evan-
gelical Christian institutions oering professional
architecture education. There is literally no other
context like Judson in the US.
2) CROSS-OVER 4 + 2 M.ARCH. DEGREE. Judson is the
only program in the country that rearranges the
stale conventional education/practicum order for
a fresh, unique and competitive experience. There
are multiple routes to professional practice in archi-
tecture, and they typically consist of professional
education + three years of internship. Judson re-
quires a full year of professional internship experi-
ence between the undergraduate and graduate
degrees. We are convinced that our graduates are
liberally educated, professionally exposed to prac-
tice, and intellectually mature in the discipline of
architecture. The creative rearrangement of the ed-
ucation/practicum combination is one-of-a-kind in
contemporary architecture education. The proof is
in the quality of industry placement our graduates
earn.
3) JUDSON IS A SMALL PROGRAM, comparatively
speaking, and students have more tutorial experi-
ences. We aren’t a 1000 student program, and you
aren’t just a number. By the time you are into your
third year, you will have had each of our professors
at least once, and by the time you have graduated
with the Master of Architecture, you will have stud-
ied under several faculty, several times. We believe
that a tight-knit group of highly qualied faculty,
often in one-to-one tutorial situations, results in an
exceptionally educated architect. It resembles the
guild more than the industrialized model of colle-
giate education in the US.
4) JUDSON IS A GREAT EXPERIMENT IN POST-SEC-
ONDARY CHRISTIAN EDUCATION IN CONTEM-
PORARY AMERICAN CULTURE. While our culture
struggles to sort out the great issues of our time,
one thing is clear, critical thinking and ethics will
characterize future professional leaders. The value
of a liberal arts education with a focus on design
thinking has never been greater. We are not sur-
prised that 20,000 students each year indicate an
interest in studying architecture in a private Chris-
tian school. We are blessed to be able to provide
such a setting.
5) THE WEBER CENTER IS A LEED GOLD LEARNING
ENVIRONMENT FOR ARCHITECTURE EDUCATION.
We don’t study every other school in the US that
closely, but we are pretty sure that we are one of
only a handful of schools within a super-green
building. It’s not just green hype; the Weber Center
is the real deal. Just check out all of the energy e-
cient and green design strategies employed by this
remarkable learning laboratory design by Professor
C. Alan Short of Cambridge University.

NAAB ACCREDITATION The Master of Architecture program is accredited
by the National Architectural Accrediting Board,
Inc. In the United States, most state registration
boards require a degree from an accredited profes-
sional degree program as a prerequisite for licen-
sure. The National Architectural Accrediting Board
(NAAB), which is the sole agency authorized to
accredit U.S. professional degree programs in ar-
chitecture, recognizes three types of degrees: the
Bachelor of Architecture, the Master of Architecture,
and the Doctor of Architecture. A program may
be granted a 8-year, 3-year, or 2-year term of ac-
creditation, depending on the extent of its confor-
mance with the established educational standards.
Doctor of Architecture and Master of Architecture
degree programs may consist of a pre-professional
undergraduate degree that, when earned sequen-
tially, constitute an accredited professional educa-
tion. However, the pre-professional degree is not, by
itself, recognized as an accredited degree.
Judson University, Department of Architecture of-
fers the following:
Master of Architecture (pre-professional degree +
42 graduate credits)
Please consult the link below for current accredita-
tion information and term:
www.judsonu.edu/undergraduate/
architecture/NAAB
Next accreditation visit for our program: 2021
JUDSON UNIVERSITYACCREDITATION
Judson University is accredited by the North Cen-
tral Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS)
for a full 10-year term, with a scheduled accredita-
tion visit in 2017-8.

JUDSON UNIVERSITY MISSION
ARCHITECTURE PROGRAMVISION AND MISSION
• Continuously exploring and defining the intersec-
tion between Christianity and architecture educa-
tion and service.
ARCHITECTURE PROGRAM VALUES
ACADEMICPREPARATION
Judson is an evangelical Christian University that rep-
resents the Church at work in higher education, equip-
ping students to be fully developed, responsible per-
sons who glorify God by the quality of their personal
relationships, their work, and their citizenship within
the community, the nation and the world. Through a
broadly based education in the liberal arts, sciences
and professions, the University enables its students to
acquire ideas and concepts that sharpen their insights,
develop skills appropriate to their career goals, and de-
velop the skills and commitment for lifelong learning.
The Judson community experience challenges gradu-
ates to be decisive leaders and active participants in
church and society, articulate proponents of biblical
Christianity, persuasive advocates for the sovereign-
ty of God over all life, and eective ambassadors for
Christ.
The Judson Architecture Program aspires to be a global
leader in architectural education and Christian Service.
The Architecture Program provides Judson students
with a Christ-centered comprehensive, professional ar-
chitecture education. Delivered by a committed fac-
ulty, the program focuses on:
• Inspiringstudentstodemonstratetheircommit-
ment to our natural environment, sustainability
and the development of a quality built environ-
ment.
• Encouragingstudentsinacademicsandcommu-
nity through an interdisciplinary approach that
prepares leaders and tempers professionals.
• Nurturing students in theirexplorationofarchi-
tecture and its divergent approaches, their cre-
ativity in design, and their expressions of per-
sonal beliefs in their personal and professional
activities.
• Demonstratingastrongfaith-basedworldview
through our program, teaching and lives.
The faculty, sta and students of the Architecture Pro-
gram support the following values that guide our indi-
vidual activities and group eorts to participate in
building God’s kingdom through educational prepara-
tion for the practice of architecture. Our values are
driven by the truths found in the Bible and can be fol-
lowed and appreciated from multiple viewpoints.
• BIBLICAL STANDARDS. We value the Word of God
and adhere to its teachings as they relate to both
professional and ethical standards and personal
relationships.
• UNIFIED ENDEAVOR. We value the balanced
coexistence of Christian faith and intellectual life.
• EDUCATION. We value knowledge and under-
standing about buildings and places that can
be shared and conveyed, which is the activity
of our professional mission. We respond to our
position within an academic setting by valuing
preeminently the formation of critical minds to-
ward the various approaches to architecture.
We will prepare students for practice by allowing them
to develop and follow an approach that is consistent
with the critical position they develop in their liberal
study of architecture.
• STEWARDSHIP. We value cultural diversity and
will encourage its understanding in our commu-
nity. We respect God’s creation and strive to make
good use of the natural world. We assist each per-
son in achieving and rightly balance their spiritu-
al, personal and professional goals.
• RELATIONSHIPS. We value human relationships

Blair Satterfield + Marc SwackhamerHouMinn Practice : Houston + Minneapolis HouMinn Practice is an award-winning and internationally published collaborative noted for its research and innovative design. HouMinn practice is the result of a decidedly non-practice and non-academic approach to research and design. Instead, it represents a third approach, one distinguished by three key characteristics that are atypical to both a traditional design firm and a traditional university. These are: first, a slow, evolutionary approach to academic design and research, second, the involvement of interdisciplinary collaborators, and third, an investment in the act of making.

My Spring Graduate project consisted in the assem-bly of a pattern book for Architectural World Missions. Architecture is a vital contributing member to the overall work of missions. We designed for the three major climatic zones: Tropical, Temperate and Polar. Four project types common in missions were chosen: Community Center, School, House, and Chapel. Each of these went on to be developed for growth, produc-ing a small, medium and large prototype of each build-ing. This resulted in a total of 36 buildings.
