Introduction A search for information about an unknown architect often begins by consulting the annual state business directories. These directories can provide important information about dates of practice, office locations and firm associations. However, one must be careful in using business directories and recognize their limitations. Other sources should be consulted to verify directory information. The definition of an “architect” has changed over time. Early directory listings included those with professional training and university degrees in architecture. Also included were individuals without formal accreditation who advertised themselves as architects. Some self-proclaimed architects may have had extensive training and experience in the theory and practice of design. Others might have been more accurately described as general contractors who relied heavily on pattern books and stock plans for their building designs. Business directory editors were often less than rigorous in checking spelling or maintaining consistency. Variations in spelling and abbreviation between editions are common. For example, some years may include a citation for J. Doe, while other editions containing the same individual may show John Doe, J.W. Doe or even J.W. Doo. Additional sources must be consulted to verify identities. Information gaps between directories are also common. When an architect moved to a new office, the directory may have missed him, both at the old location and the new office. The lack of a directory listing for a year or two does not necessarily indicate that an architect stopped practicing or moved out of state. Similarly, other reliable sources may indicate that an architect had retired even though his name continues to appear in the directory, sometimes for several years. Publishers collected most directory information the year before publication. For example, the 1924 directory reflects business operations in 1923. While state business directories serve as a useful starting point, city directories, newspapers, manuscript collections and other sources should be consulted to verify and expand on the state directory information. This Architects of Colorado database is a compilation of each year’s listing of architects and architectural firms in those annual state business directories available in the Stephen H. Hart Library of the Colorado Historical Society. Names were

taken from the statewide classified listing section for “Architects” in each directory. The directory for 1882 is the first to include a statewide compilation of architects in the classified section. Entries before this date are from the individual city listings. Variations in spelling and abbreviation are noted. No attempt was made to correct errors or to verify information in other sources. State business directories were not published every year. During the Great Depression of the 1930s and during World War II, the state business directories were published biannually. The Hart Library does not contain a directory for each year of publication in the late 1940s. Those years without directories are noted in the bibliography.
