Library on Via Guilia  

My design is based on the development of the modern library; all that is has become stemmed from a common root. Libraries of today have taken on many different forms and functions, many housing very different activities than libraries originally used to. My building shape has been treated as a whole, which has then been divided. The the larger mass are the books and reading spaces – from which the media side has broken off and pulled away. I believe the media aspect, computer driven research and reading, is a development from the books provided in my library.

The book building contains the reception, reading spaces and individual desks. Whilst the me-dia building, branching off and pulling away from the media is still very much connected to its roots from the books with bridges. This building contains computers, group work and meeting room, an auditorium as well as a café and access to the roof garden. One must enter through the book building in order to reach the media facilities, subtly reminding visitors of the ongoing change and history. As books have been around longer and are seen as the “base” the book build-ing is also a floor higher, resulting in a hierarchy of space – slightly looking down on the still emerging media block.

The space created between the two blocks acts as a walkway passage to easily access the library and/or walk through to the other side, bringing people to the building as well. The divide is entirely glazed, illustrating the “crack” in the whole, capturing the tension in this “quiet revolution” between the books and the media. In roof plan the building reads as three pieces fitting together but pulled apart, but on ground level space has been carved away to provide comfortable walking space and shade from the hot sun.

in Rome, there are many narrow streets. Buildings are usually several stories high and roof entablatures gently tilts out.

 

“the divide” that was developed exaggerates this idea. as the roof floors fit together but have been separated and the lower floors adjusted to create a walk-able passageway, the glazed area thus tilts. This creates a dynamic space. At the same time is acts as the buildings main source of natural daylight, whilst also providing a slightly shaded courtyard/.

In the media building, there is an auditorium located on the ground floor. This part of the library can be separately closed off using sliding doors and entered through a separate entrance on the side street of via guilia: if wished to be rented or used out of opening hours for example. The library will be dimly lit up at night, and although perhaps closed at late night hours the divide will still be accessible and walked through. a landmark within the area.

GPS TRACKINGCops and Robbers: Time and Place

 Task: One pair (robbers) starts at the castle at the top of the royal mile, their goal to make it parliament at the bottom of the royal mile without being caught by the second pair (cops) in a twenty minute walk duration. Perimeters:  Royal mile high street it’s connecting closes and the two parallel streets that run either side of the royal mile, cowgate and market street. Concept: Comparative study between cops trying to catch the robbers with and without outside knowledge via phone calls at 5 minute inter-vals during the walk. Conclusions: Conceptually thinking about the paths and routes the pairs take to get from point A to B whilst under indirect surveillance compared to a direct pin pointing of location via a live phone update every 5 minutes.  Mapping the possible intersections on the line as-suming the correct timing, as well as comparing the physical changes in the paths taken under different circumstances such as during and after a phone call revealing their current location. We also gained an insight into the flaws of the gps system through its 2d representa-tion of data in an otherwise 3d context of reality
