Introduction

According to Neil Denari’s project, a separator appeared to be a wall that divided

space into two disparate spaces, both of which would have specific but associated

functions. Variations of the separator will be made as individual own designs derived

from study and reflection on Neil Denari's space separator. This project speculates on

alternative functions, shapes, construction methods, and materials. Nonetheless, the

primary role of the separator stays unmodified, it acts as a visual and physical one,

accommodating the different functions of space in-between.

The key purpose is to understand the design assignment to create a spatial

framework for the form, function, construction method, and appearance of an

architectural embodiment by developing analog and digital three-and two-dimensional

models.

Methodology

First of all, the goals and values of the separator were specified and finalized

based on study procedures, supplied academic materials, framing functions and

specifications. Particularly, the project was determined to focus on alternative

functionalities and forms, etc … Following this step, the basic and major components of

the separator were visualized through 2D drawings. The idea then was evaluated,

considered and modified corresponding to the available conditions and prerequisites

from the first stage of the architectural design process. Also, a general review of the

designing schematics was presented to the instructors. After that, the drawings or

sketches were specified with detailed dimensions and notes. Simultaneously, the

existing problems need to be addressed and solved to save time efficiently in later

stages and at the same time improve the design. Finally, floor plan and elevations

would be drawn in an accurate scale thanks to cautious calculations with regards to

references (Neufert, E. et al., 2000).

Discussion

The design is conceptualized by modernism, but not completely. Modernist

architecture, or modernism, is a style that arose in response to large-scale revolutions

both in technology and culture in the early 20th century. From an empirical point of view,

it is associated with the functions of buildings, the reasonable usage of materials, the

removal of ornament, the simple and clarified forms, and the openness to the structural

innovation. (“Modernism | Tag | ArchDaily,” n.d.) Specifically, the functions of the

separator were still be prioritized without the details used as decorations, and all

elements have structural roles. The components keep a shape that is not too

complicated but instead of straight, they are curved and create a feeling of softness as

well as movement. Having several layers with the contour-line shape positioned at

different heights, the whole structure looks like a flowing waterfall from above. This idea,

influenced by parametric style, brings advantages in both aesthetic and functionality.

The design also has the same operation as sculptures of artist Angela Glajcar, who

converted simple materials such as paper, plastic and metal into volumetric shapes with

depth and solidity (“Galerie Martin Kudlek | Angela Glajcar - Arch2O.com,” n.d.).

Referring to the functions, the structure consists of two walls as two opposite

waterfalls and a void in between. The entrance wall has an exterior that serves as a

small gallery to display the studio's products. While its interior is a sitting area where

several books are placed for customers to read in the waiting time. The opposite side

of this zone includes the reception area and storage space for customers. Behind are

shelves for the studio. With this arrangement, every space is utilized and this separator

provides functions for both types of users: customers and employees.
