The project brief was to expand the existing building in order to relieve cramped conditions and to improve amenities for students. Working on the same building required cooperation between the original Architect, James Grose, and the later Architect, Webber Architects. The brief was to maintain the original design intent and work with the original pallet of materials to keep the language of the building intact. When the building was first conceived in the early 90’s it was driven by two things, budget and size. The maximum area was to be delivered for the budget. This same brief was used in these works. The design responded by utilizing existing undercroft areas in order to minimize construction cost. Webber Architects referred closely to the original documentation for the building to reproduce detailing that reflected the original. On the upper level, two new lecture theatres and an enlargement of the existing common tutorial space were added. On the lower level, two new teaching rooms were added and an existing teaching space was converted into a 40 seat computer laboratory. The existing “cloister” used as a waiting area for students was enclosed in raw stainless steel mesh to protect from mosquitoes present at the University. Webber Architects was engaged to document this project for administration by APP Project Management. The success of the project led to additional design work being incorporated. This included a further computer laboratory and maintenance works. The Architecture Design Studio (ADS) was an addition to the 1994 Grose Bradley Sulman award winning, design studio at the University of Newcastle.

Assisting with the ADS project was a positive opportunity to contribute to the university that provides many of the graduates working with Webber Architects today.
