San Diego Eco - House
Site Analysis
The design of the San Diego Eco-House is Intended to utilize stategies such as:passive cooling, cross ventilation and siteorientation, to achieve an environmentallyfreind home. An interior garden, that also serves as a ventilation shaft, helps connects the residence with the beautiful enviornmentalsurroundings. The house is conceptually located on the beautiful hillsides of Switzer Canyon. Due to its location, the southern glazed facade of the house captures alluring views down the Canyon towards Down Town San Diego.

Makinster Addition
Before Addition
After Addition
The clients were in need of an additional studio space. The new studio space would facilitate the artistic passion of Mr. Makinster, who is a practicingpainter and sculptor. The design solution envolvedfortifying the existing garage to allow for the additional studio space. This solution uses the vertical circulation to create a gated courtyard which provides a sense of privacy valued by the owners. The northern facade of the addition is fully glazed to allow Mr. Makinster to paint in a naturally lite space.

The structure is intended to be a learning exibit center for patrons walking the scenic paths along the beach. The program features touch screen pedestals andlarge wall mounted LCD displays to provide patrons with informative videos of the local marine life, flora & fauna. The structure’s design is inspired by the ability of a structure to define the circulation of its program. As a passive cooling mechanism the central cylinder actsas a solar chimney as its heated up by solar exposure.

Sketches
I believe that hand sketches are key to the Design Process. I find truth in the idea that sketching of ideas or concepts better helps the understanding and justification of an architectural design. I intend to continue my exploration of Skecthing & Art and i willbegin to develop techniques that can translate overto the practical world of Architecture and allow for beautifully effective hand renderings.
