Ljubljana - literary center

The sequences.Ljubljana exists of a series of small streets and alleys, alternating with larger and smaller squares. These sequences follow each other on and on. Ramps and stairs repeatedly give access to a new and different part of the city. Each with its own specific karakter. This also applies to the interior of the block, located on the Presemov square. The new design is grafted on the one existing walking axis. Further strengthe-ning of the existing urban sequences forms the base of this design. The three most important parame-ters of this design are; the flow of the square in the site, activation of the vertical edge and creating unity with one large roof. The tissue. The intent is that the residual space in the block is a mini-city, built with a mix of functions of which the archive serves as the literal and figurative foundation. Not only the various programmatic parts of the design are interwoven but also the volumes are placed on a logical way. The public spaces between the existing waiting facades and the volumes are alternately larger or smaller. This creates a sequence of different squares. The underground archive follows the existing slope and receives light in the circulation corridors through zenithal lighting.Open-closed.Het design is fully perforated on the north side so that all rooms have view on a particular bit within the area. On the east and west there are some perforations and on the south only one block is perforated. This concept is also applied in the design of the roof. The northern side receives direct light, while the south sideonly receives diffuse light.Building as a “hall of fame”. "The hall of fame is next to the major axis. Because of the small passageways and courtyards, the building itself also act as a hall of fame. Therefore a printable wall material is chosen. These panels are attached to the supporting structure of the building.

INGThe Marnix building, the Belgian HQ of ING, consists of two separate office buildings. A new glass infill is designed to unify these buildings, aiming to be the heart of the ING headquarters.

Two types of circulation are inserted in the glass volume. The large staircases are conceived as a slow circulation. This inclining path between the suspended platforms connects al public spaces such as the financial, dining and relaxation areas. The fast circulation consists of elevators, located on the edge between the current buildings and the new infill. This circulation serves the open office areas and meeting spaces of the bank.

The opposite inner sides of the main buildings are shaped with box-like volumes. These extruded conference rooms and social areas visually connect the two office buildings. The office layouts within the buildings are redesigned as open working spaces, designed as a new office typology. As a new working environment, it will stimulate its users to work and communicate better.

Radartower

The new radarbuilding for the port of Zeebrugge, is designed to be a fully functional building, organising cargo traffic amidst the large-scale port activities.Operable regardless of height, the design proposes a solid, rectangular volume containing press-rooms, crisis-rooms and operator-spaces.The architecture blends with its raw surroundings by its shape and materiality.

A large concrete base supports the building, extending the concrete blocks protecting the harbour mouth against currents and tidal forces.By its implantation it creates different areas in the open pier area. The building itself is clad in an adjustable shell of weathered cor-ten steel, allowing port-operators to close or open themselves towards the sea. The facade is further equipped with LED-lighting, directed towards the interior. This feature creates a comfortable working-environment during nighttime, eliminating reflection from the window planes within the operator spaces. The heart of the design -the operator spaces- are slightly elevated, so operators can work from a more favorable position.

'372' is a composition exercise, using a self-chosen module in a cluster as a method to create architecture. The design has no implantation, and uses light and building height as defining factors in order to create a clusters of 372 units.

The design intent is to create apartment buildings with open spaces, patios, dubble height living rooms and extended terraces. Each unit consists of a two-story apartment with two bedrooms. Large, operating shutter-panels provide shading when required, as well as privacy in the bedrooms. These, as well as the dining and living area are separated from one another by the terrace/patio, and allow for visual relations within the unit.

Clustering these units results in U-shaped buildings, with circulation cores located in both corners. Their height is dependant on sunlight, providing the ideal lighting angle for units in each building.

Doel Bunkerdwellings

Fragile rehabitation.

Doel is an abandoned town.A town without inhabitants is a town without an identity. As the planned demolition has been cancelled and housing has been reinstated, the question was how to create architecture that deals with the recent scars of the village.Attempting to capture the emptiness which has been imposed on the site, a new masterplan has been developed for concrete patio-houses. Turning away from public life, all houses revolve around a central patio, structuring the interior and creating visual relationships inside the dwelling. Entrance to multiple units occurs through large, concrete sliding doors. This creates a transition from the public to the private realm.

Regardless, communal spaces have been designed, with hopes of being used more and more by the new community as time passes. With these patio-houses, the creation of identity will rely on its inhabitants, dealing with the emptiness of the past.

Speelsheid in beperking.
