AU 261: This is the first assessment report received from this program. It consisted of a syllabus and sample student lab reports. The report was missing 1) a rubric measuring success on the lab reports 2) an interpretation of the data 3) an action plan based on the results. In addition, more data was needed – it consisted of five reports by the same student; the student’s name was not removed from the data. If desired, the department can request additional mentoring from the committee when completing future assessment reports.

Summary of AAC feedback and recommendations on 2014-15 submissions:

Annual report for 2013-14: the Dental Hygiene Program is commended for its attempt to use assessment results for program improvement. They chose to focus on an area beyond the licensure exam, instead assisting the student in skills which would ease their transition into employment. The method used was an indirect assessment (surveys of students and faculty) to measure whether the curriculum change seems to be effective and desirable. While the overall results of the assessment were positive, a follow up using direct assessment of student learning might be necessary in order to determine the success of the curriculum shift. In the future, it would be helpful to include the surveys and the raw data with the assessment.

The Dental Lab Program is to be commended for their prompt reporting of certification scores. While the students met the benchmark, with a higher than average testing score and ranking 3rd

out of 11 testing sites, the average indicates some room for improvement. The AAC wondered if the results received by the program were only cumulative, or could be broken out into subject areas that could then be mapped back onto program competencies or classes. This might help the program in future assessments to identify particular areas of strengths and weaknesses.

HWPE – PE 104, 109 and 142: the committee commends the HWPE department for its innovative and relevant assessment methods. These reports were clear and thorough, presenting a pointed analysis and good recommendations for curriculum improvement based on the assessment results. The committee suggests that for PE 104, an additional section be included in the rubric which measures the quality and innovativeness of the students’ work rather just their completion of all parts of the project.

Health, Wellness and Physical Education HT 201 and PE 110: The assessment for PE 110 was commended – it analyzed strengths and weaknesses, provided data and a rubric, and included a reflective section with an action plan for course improvement. During the review of the HT 201 report an interesting discussion arose concerning test validity: it seems that the certifying exam from the Red Cross has questions known to have ambiguous wording. The program is looking into other certifications such as National Safety Council or American Heart Association, but the Red Cross exam is universally accepted at the program’s transfer institutions.

LAS Humanities/Music – MU 215: The assessment was performed on only one campus, apparently due to a difference in teaching styles between various instructors. The assessment narrative shows concern with the balance between academic freedom and unity of subject matter. The AAC had difficulty comprehending the assessment because the assessment instrument (embedded test questions) was not included, the questions were not mapped onto course outcomes or program competencies, and there was no benchmark for the percentage of students meeting the standard. It was impossible to tell whether the program considered 65% of the students meeting the standard to be acceptable or not. The AAC also questioned the effectiveness of the rubric included – it might have been appropriate to rate essay questions, but not for short answer/multiple choice. As there was no copy of the questions, it was impossible to tell how the students had actually been assessed.

LAS/Humanities – Foreign Language - SP 110 and 111: The reports were clear and thorough, including a thoughtful analysis of the results and a rubric used for scoring the outcomes. The committee’s critiques were minor: one concerned the terminology used on the rubric. It is impossible for 92% of the students to score above average! In the future, we suggest replacing the word “average” with “meets standard.” If possible, a copy of the assessment instrument (exam) should be included.

Liberal Arts: Humanities/Art – reports for AT 200, 201, 210, 211, 221, 222, 225, 262, 281, 282, AT 213, AT 230 and AT 280: The art unit is commented for their work on these assessment reports. The unit recognizes that the current plan was difficult to carry out and is probably not sustainable – the committee suggested that in the future, studio classes be broken into clusters (drawing, painting, design etc.) and assessed together, eliminating the necessity of doing so many separate reports. The committee also suggested that Art History classes could be assessed using embedded test questions. There was also a discussion of how the unit could get more useful assessment data from the process, and it was suggested that the current rubric could be modified to tie in the outcomes of the various studio clusters.

Liberal Arts/Humanities – Languages: Report for FR 110. The report was thorough, including raw scores, methodology and analysis. In general, it was a fine job. There are two caveats: first is that the terminology used in the data reporting should be changed – 90% of the students cannot score above average! Second is an issue which is not at all a problem with the report – there were only 9 students in the class. Such a small population makes it difficult to reach any definitive conclusions. Perhaps the department could plan to compare results with their next assessment, and try to draw conclusions by gathering sufficient data over time.

Summary of AAC feedback and recommendations on 2014-15 submissions:

This report was self-admittedly problematic. As stated in the opening narrative, no real analysis of the results was done, ostensibly because participation in the assessment was low. While assessing 15 instruments is hardly the most reliable sample size, when the results are as dramatic as only 13% of the students getting a particular question correct, some conclusions should have been drawn. In the committee’s eyes, a larger problem than the sample size is that most of the courses were assessed using only 3-4 embedded test questions. These questions were mapped onto the extremely broad SUNY competencies for the various knowledge areas. It’s really impossible to assess “ Knowledge of either a broad outline of world history, or the distinctive features of the history, institutions, economy, society, culture, etc. of one non-Western civilization” with three multiple choice questions. The suggestion for future assessments would be to either 1) use at least 10 questions related to the outcomes for each particular course (which should already be mapped onto program competencies) or 2) use essay questions graded on a rubric for each competency. The committee also questioned the development of the courses – were they from a test bank or written by faculty? The report should also include some benchmark for success. Finally, one major issue is that all social science courses were supposed to be assessed at the same time according to their assessment plan. This had initially seemed a bad idea to the committee, but we were assured that the work was being done. However, according to the report, a significant number of the courses were not assessed. The committee is requesting that the assessment plan be re-submitted, with the missing assessments scheduled again. It might make more sense for the Social Sciences department to break their plan into multiple assessment plans like the humanities and sciences. In any case, the assessments should be spread over a four year period to avoid the crushing workload of a report like the current one.

Pass rates on the assessments ranged from 87-100% on the individual items. The reports were clear and easy to understand, and as the pass rates were high, no action was deemed necessary.

OD 140, 232, 233, 240, 245, and 246: The reports were clear and concise, relating outcomes to appropriate assessment methods and criteria, summarizing data and stating an action plan if needed. The committee suggests that the program consider establishing a unified benchmark for success in all classes. It seemed as though a passing rate of 83% met the objective in OD 140 (which seems reasonable), but that a passing rate of 97% was not good enough in OD 232 (which seems excessive.)

The 2012-13 report shows the students falling very slightly under the expected pass rate on the NBCOT exam (.6%). The AAC wondered if the results received by the program were only cumulative, or could be broken out into subject areas that could then be mapped back onto program competencies or classes. If this could be done, it would be an excellent way to target specific areas where the students need assistance. The program did mention several specific courses of action including administration of a preliminary HOBET exam as an admission criteria.

The Occupational Therapy program failed to submit an the 2013-14 report in a timely fashion, so in lieu of that report, AVP Wiles suggested that they submit their strategic plan to the AAC as it contained information pertaining to the improvement of student learning. The plan noted a declining pass rate on the NBCOT certification exam, and as part of their program goal to improve academic quality, they proposed several strategies to address this, and also to improve the lab courses. The AAC appreciates the OT Program’s attempt to comply with their assessment plan. However, in the future, this is not an acceptable procedure. The actual data concerning NBCOT scores was not included, and there was no analysis giving the rationale for the planned changes to address the issue.
