The Natatorium project in Manhattan, KS will serve as a community center and public pool. It will house an Olympic-size pool for regulation competitions, as well as lifeguard/administration offices, lobby, and cafe.
The project is to be located in CiCo Park, in an open field on the street corner. The greater park contains a football field, playgrounds, tennis courts and other recreational facilities. The site contains a dense grouping of trees to the west side and is bounded by a playground field/nature trail to the south.
My design breaks up the program into two main forms- the pool itself and the rest of the support spaces- lobby, cafe, lifeguard and administration. The pool form is inward-focused and slopes upward, while the support form is open and overlooks the tree grouping/creek. A green roof separates the two forms and opens onto both spaces to provide natural ventilation. Natural elements such as local limestone and timber supports tie the building in with its surroundings.

The clients, a couple living in Kansas City, MO, asked our studio to design a studio loft/garage space behind their traditional limestone home. The home itself is currently being rennovated to include a wraparound porch and modern, updated interiors. The project was to include a garage, studio space, workshop and guest accommodation space.
The home is located in an older residential neighborhood consisting of mainly traditional, pitched-roof homes without attached garages. The new project should connect to the alley driveway behind the house and should accommodate the large existing oak tree.
The solution is a pure geometric form, using reclaimed limestone from the rennovation as the garage walls and glass curtain walls above to celebrate the meshing of traditional and modern. The guest accommodation/living space is above the garage with a studio mezzanine above. Wooden louvers control daylight on the upper levels. Ultimately, the clients chose this scheme as their inspiration for this future addition.

The Economic Assistance Center in San Francisco, CA will be a place of hope and refuge for those seeking financial help. The program includes ground-level retail, office/administration, conference space, computer lab, daycare and classrooms.
Located in downtown San Francisco on a corner lot near a train station, the site is relatively small and will require at least five stories to fit the program. Both corner edges will have to maintain the urban edge of the surrounding buildings. The solution must also factor in the possibility of seismic activity with strucutral cross-bracing.
My project incorporates V-shaped cross-bracing as both structure and facade detail. Behind the hollow, hot-rolled steel V’s, glass curtain wall lets ample daylight into office and classroom spaces. Programmatically, it is separated into two forms- a solid, concrete form wraps around the north and west edges and contains support spaces. The lower level is double-height and greenery on the upper east facade filters light into the space within. The upper-level classrooms and offices open onto an outdoor patio space and a double-height space within provides even more openness.

The Fabrication Lab is a combination woodshop and metalshop project located in Manhattan, KS. The building will house both shop spaces, classrooms, digital fabrication space to be open for shop members and a maker-in-residence apartment. Additional outdoor program will serve as public gathering space and exhibition for completed projects.
The project will be located in downtown Manhattan, around the corner from the historic downtown district. The vicinity is relatively dilapidated but new commercial and retail developments are happening nearby. The site is located on a corner with two streetfronts to the north and east and an alleyway to the south.
program
site The solution focused on holding the urban street corner and blocking off the south alleyway with the public plaza. The shop spaces are double-height and an upper-level hallway runs the length of the building, overlooking the shops.

During the Spring 2012 semester, I studied at Centro Studi, Citta di Orvieto in Orvieto, Italy. Our studio focused on the Pattern Language work of Christopher Alexaner, studying the patterns and applying them to the city to create Orvieto’s own unique pattern language. In addition, we focused on mapping, travel sketching, watercolor and quick gestural drawing of our surroundings. We sought to understand the urban conditions of the town and how they relate to its geographical surroundings and the daily life of its inhabitants.
