WHO WE ARE ARCS Foundation (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists) is a private organization conceived and run entirely by philanthropic women to address one of this country’s most critical issues: the serious shortage of American scientists. Since our founding in 1958 by a small group of visionary women in Los Angeles, ARCS Foundation has grown to 16 chapters nationally and invested more than $96 million in the innovation potential of almost 9,000 of the most outstanding American scholars in science, engineering and medical research at 53 of the nation’s top research universities. We are proud of what ARCS Foundation has accomplished as a volunteer organization. The Portland Chapter was founded in 2004, and since that time we have raised over $2.4 million to sponsor 150 graduate students working to compete PhDs at Oregon Health & Science University, Oregon State University and the University of Oregon. Our mission is important to our country’s economic growth, our global technological leadership and ultimately the well-being and the quality of life for all people. Our dedicated and hardworking membership is committed to fostering the success of these remarkable individuals, our next generation of scientific leaders and innovators. The significant impact of this work in our first eleven years earned us recognition from the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP Oregon and SW Washington Chapter) as “Outstanding Philanthropic Foundation” in November 2015.

WADE MARCUM, PhDDepartment of Nuclear Engineering & Radiation Health PhysicsOregon State University

Early in Wade Marcum’s collegiate tenure, he knew his career goal was to enter academia and be a professor. Today he is Assistant Professor in the School of Nuclear Science and Engineering at Oregon State University. “The balance of instruction, research and guiding students to reach their aspirations are the specific traits which continue to excite me to date,” he said.

He originally intended to focus on mechanical engineering, but changed his mind when introduced to researching nuclear power technology. “It became quite clear how interesting and important this field is to our society’s energy security,” Marcum said.

Currently his research group has several on-going research activities which are supported by industry, national laboratories and government agencies. Through a three-year, $4 million Integrated Research Project Award from the Department of Energy, Wade will head a team of researchers to restart the Transient Reactor Test Facility at the Idaho National Laboratory. While the specific objectives of each contract vary, they all ultimately aspire to reach a high-level goal of producing the safest and most economic form of stable energy -- nuclear energy.

“I used my annual ARCS scholar money to support travel to conferences where I was able to network and engage professionals from industry and academia. By the time I stepped into my faculty appointment, I had created a close group of colleagues who have significantly helped accelerate my career.”

OHSU SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT

QUIN DENFELDTHE BATES, FOLEY, PEDERSEN SCHOLAR AWARD School of Nursing, OHSU Research Interest: cardiovascular pathophysiology and frailty syndrome among older adults

Most important impact of ARCSI feel that ARCS holds extremely high standards for their scholars, and I am continually working to live up to those standards. The ARCS community is amazingly supportive of its scholars. Not only do I feel a strong professional connection with ARCS, but I also feel a great personal connection.

My researchIt is my hope that by better understanding symptoms in heart failure through pinpointing the mechanisms that cause them to arise, we can develop targeted interventions to mitigate the profound symptom burden we see in heart failure.

Long term goalsI hope to be a successful nurse scientist and leader with a robust program of research focused on improving the health of patients living with cardiovascular disease.

Why Oregon I am a native Oregonian having lived and worked in this state for my entire life. My husband is sixth generation on the land where we farm. Thus, my family and I have very close ties to Oregon. My professional goal is to continue doing important healthcare-changing research that serves the state that we call home.

OSU SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT

DYLAN ANDERSON THE SALLY AND CECIL DRINKWARD SCHOLAR AWARDCivil and Construction Engineering, Oregon State University Research Interest: coastal sediment transport as it relates to geomorphology and soft engineering structures

Most important impact of ARCSThe ARCS scholar award is about more than just financial support - it jump-starts our early careers by demonstrating to other institutions and agencies that we are worthy of multiple year investments, providing the confidence that can lead to additional fellowships and grants.

My researchThe scholar award has given me the freedom to follow the science beyond the product promised by my project’s grant. My research was initially focused on coastal erosion caused by individual waves impacting dunes, but it has expanded after realizing that large-scale climate change is the dominant force driving coastal change. The scholar award has allowed me to travel outside of Oregon and visit the experts in these broader fields to learn techniques that can be applied back here on our state’s coast.

Long term goalsI approach life from an analytical and curious perspective - the process of being a doctoral student is teaching me how to channel these curiosities into research that is beneficial to the general public.

MEETING THE CHALLENGE: NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH ROCHE

AMY WILLIAMSOHSU Behavioral NeuroscienceI choose to pursue a PhD in behavioral neuroscience because I am fascinated by the brain and how it dictates our behavior. In particular, I am studying the properties of learning and memory that underlie disorders such as addiction and PTSD. These disorders both lack a highly effective treatment and I believe the study of their foundations in memory can help find more reliable treatment methods. Being an ARCS scholar for the past year has given me the opportunity to interact with like-minded scholars and to attend scientific conferences that I would not have been able to attend otherwise. Thank you for furthering my career in science, ARCS!

HOLLY CORBITTOHSU Molecular & Medical Genetics The Roche/ARCS Scholar Award has allowed me to be part of a network of people who support me as a young researcher. Being surrounded by some of the most successful and influential people in Portland who have a genuine interest in my research, has been an amazing experience. I research heart defects in infants with Down syndrome. Hearing how this has touched people’s lives and how grateful they are for the research we do, has really given me the passion to work harder. Also, the financial support that I received helped me release the burden of everyday struggles, which allows me to devote my full attention to school.

CAROLINE GLIDDENOSU College of Science, Integrative BiologyI have always loved science and the process of testing hypotheses and questions through experimentation. The Roche/ARCS Scholar Award will directly fund part of my research. The award money will allow me to develop and utilize immune assays with the goal of uncovering the mechanism behind variation in response to infection – this study will be one of the first to be conducted in a natural system. In addition to the funds, the Roche/ARCS Scholar Award will aid me in further connecting to the scientific community thus helping to make connections and forge future collaborations.

ROCHE/ARCS FOUNDATION SCHOLAR AWARD PROGRAMIn 2014, ARCS Foundation entered a new and unique national part-nership with The Roche Foundation to support life science innovation. The joint program will provide a total of $805,500 over three years to support 36 life science Ph.D. scholars within uppermost ranked life science departments at 25 universities across America. The Roche Foundation is providing 82 percent of program funding and ARCS chapters are contributing 18 percent of funds. The first program of its kind for both foundations, it leverages ARCS Foundation’s established infrastructure and expertise in supporting U.S. STEM students and demonstrates The Roche Foundation’s commitment to strengthening America’s capacity for innovative research. The Portland Chapter is honored to have received funds for three scholar awards.

MEETING THE CHALLENGE: ENDOWMENTS

Stable, sustained financial support for our graduate students is the goal of the Portland Chapter of ARCS Foundation. By creating a Named Endowment with a gift of $200,000 or more, a donor supports new graduate student Scholar Awards in perpetuity at our partner universities. The Portland Chapter’s first Named Endowment was awarded in 2013. As a focused goal for the chapter, we are pleased that two additional Named Endowments have been generously donated. The Portland Chapter is funding an additional award in perpetuity in 2015 in celebration of our 10th Anniversary. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the donors listed below, the Portland Chapter has established three Endowed Named Scholar Awards since 2013.

Caron & Larry OggBarbara & Philip SilverSusan & George Swindells

SCOTT JONESSILVER ENDOWED SCHOLARBehavorial Neuroscience Graduate Program, OHSUMy relationship with the donors:I’ve thoroughly enjoyed meeting and getting to know the Silvers over the last few years. We’ve had many great conversations, both scientific and non-scientific, and they are always encouraging and supportive of my scientific training.

My research:My research uses neuroimaging techniques to look at structural and functional characteristics of the developing adolescent brain. I’m interested in understanding how adolescent alcohol and drug use impacts the brain, as well as cognitive performance. More specifically, I’m interested in how adolescents perceive future consequences, and how this differs in substance using youths, at both a behavioral and neurobiological level, in hopes of guiding future prevention and intervention strategies.

Most important impact of ARCS:The ARCS award removed much of the financial burden that is associated with moving across country to pursue a graduate degree, and allowed me to focus more on my research and training as a scientist.

WHY WE GAVE A NAMED ENDOWMENTDonor Barbara Silver: “Our thought was to introduce and energize the concept of estate planning as a source of enduring funding, putting Portland ARCS Chapter on even firmer footing.“

Overall, Barbara and her husband Philip have supported four Portland ARCS scholars. Barbara Silver: “They have reflected the highest quality of ambition and competence. They have been and are very stimulating young people – Karen Tonsfeld, Amber Jones-Hackathorne, Wai Yan Lam and Scott Jones.”

WELLS FARGO’S COMMITMENT TO EDUCATIONWells Fargo embraces education as a major focus of its corporate philanthropy. To augment its efforts, Wells Fargo partners with high performing nonprofit groups, such as ARCS Foundation Portland Chapter. The company believes that more can be accomplished through joint effort, making this partnership with ARCS Portland a natural extension of that corporate belief. For the past five years, Wells Fargo has underwritten a portion of the ARCS Portland Scholar Awards Luncheon. We realize that increasing tuition costs, rising student debt, and decreased public funding could mean that fewer young people choose to enter science research. Our goal in partnering with ARCS Portland is to provide encouragement for scholars and express our corporate belief in the value of science education. In addition to our support of the Scholar Awards Luncheon, we have had the privilege to provide Hannah Rolston, OSU College of Engineering, with an ARCS scholar award. This partnership between Wells Fargo corporate philanthropy and ARCS Portland to support scholars at Oregon State University, OHSU and University of Oregon expresses the company commitment to education in tangible form. It will encourage innovative new technologies, bring brilliant and creative people to the community, and stimulate the economy of Oregon. Wells Fargo supports ARCS Portland scholars and believes that this commitment to STEM research brings investment and business opportunities to our region and benefits our community.

ARCS thanks the generosity displayed by corporations and foundations between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015.
