A.R.D.: Agro-industrie Recherches et Développements Created in 1989, ARD is a mutualised research centre owned by farming cooperatives, whose mission is to find new commercial opportunities for large-scale crops while favouring biorefining's integrated approach. ARD has developed expertise in fractionation, biotechnologies, green chemistry, and the environment. ARD also coordinates and promotes the innovation platform B.R.I (Bioraffinerie Recherches et Innovations), accredited by the IAR competitive cluster and under contract with the DGCIS (French Department for Industrial and Service Competitiveness). BIOAMBER: Production of succinic acid Development of a process for producing succinic acid and marketing of exploitation licenses. BIODEMO: Industrial biotechnology demonstration unit, coordinated and promoted by A.R.D with funding from the Region, the Department, and the ERDF. CHAMTOR: Glucose and starch production Processing factory that operates continuously, 24h/day; every year it processes 450,000 tonnes of wheat from the Champagne Ardenne region. It employs 200 people and generates a turnover of €180 M half of which is on export markets. Chamtor produces ingredients like glucose syrups, proteins, and starch, which are sold to food industry manufacturers as ingredients for drinks, biscuits, sweets, various bakery products, as well as certain meat products. Bran, gluten, and soluble wheat proteins are sold for animal feed, while fermentation substrate and native starch are used respectively for distilling in bioethanol production and in the paper/cardboard industry. • CRISTAL UNION GROUP: Sugar production and distillation A cooperative company that represents approximately 30% of French beet production, Cristal Union federates nearly 10,000 farmer members and 2,200 employees on 15 production sites, including the Bazancourt sugar refinery and Cristanol. Cristal Union has two main business lines: - Sugar for industry and food (the Daddy and Erstein trademarks); - Alcohol and ethanol (perfumery, cosmetics, food, spirits, and fuel). With its two major distilleries (Arcis-sur-Aube and Cristanol), Cristal Union is the leader on the renewable energy market. A subsidiary of Cristal Union Group, the Cristanol distillery was born of a partnership between Bletanol and Cristal Union and is entirely dedicated to the production of food grade alcohol and ethanol from renewable plant energy in the form of beet and cereals. • BIOMASS COGENERATION PLANT PROJECT: The production of 22 MW of electricity, the equivalent of the needs of a town with a population of 25,000 people. Production of steam for Chamtor and Cristanol. 75,000 tonnes of CO2 saved every year through the use of biomass (straw, wood, and biomass from silos). • CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN WHITE BIOTECHNOLOGIES: Ecole Centrale Paris - AgroParisTech - Reims Management School Research and training in industrial biotechnology processes. • THE FUTUROL PROJECT: Procéthol 2G A pilot factory used to develop a production process for 2nd generation bioethanol, bringing together R&D players, industrial manufacturers, and financiers; all leaders in their areas of activity.
