A Glorious Awakening!Overstrand was once a sleepy fishing village, until the London journalist and travel writer, Clement Scott, came to visit in 1883. He fell in love with the area and called it ‘Poppyland’. A number of Scott’s well-to-do London friends were enticed up and some bought land in the village to build second homes, earning Overstrand the name ‘Village of Millionaires’. The pioneering architect Sir Edwin Lutyens designed Overstrand Hall and The Pleasaunce here. When the original occupants of The Pleasaunce, Lord and Lady Battersea, died in the 1930s the grounds were sold off. This property was built within the former kitchen garden, and whilst the part-walled gardens are now mainly ornamental, they retain a number of original features, including 12ft high handmade, Italian wrought-iron gates, apple, pear, rose and laburnum pergola walks and a head gardener’s office.

A Home And A HavenThe house is tucked away behind two sets of gates, one leading to the spinney at the front of the property and one set from the old kitchen garden. The house itself sits within the walled garden and was built in the 1930s for the Chivers jam-making family. It’s been altered and extended over the decades, with the current owners making their mark, and is now a spacious and contemporary residence filled with light, boasting beautiful views of the garden on every side. On The DoorstepWith its cliff-top setting, Cromer is an Edwardian family seaside town famous for its succulent Cromer Crabs and local seafood restaurants. It has long sandy ‘blue flag’ beaches, landscaped cliff-top gardens, Edwardian style promenades, boating lake, putting and bowling greens and a pier with the Pavilion Theatre at the end. The medieval church of St Peter and St Paul in the centre of the town is a symbol of early prosperity with its tower being used as a lighthouse until 1719 when the first lighthouse was built. Cromer has a good range of shops, a cinema, railway station with trains to Norwich, doctors and dental surgeries and schools catering for children of all ages. For leisure enthusiasts there are tennis and cricketing facilities, golf at the Royal Cromer Golf Club and the ever popular award winning beaches of North and North West Norfolk.

How Far Is It ToOverstrand is located on the North Norfolk coast approximately 22 miles north of the cathedral city of Norwich, which has all the facilities you would expect from a county town including main line railway station to London Liv-erpool Street and international airport. Sheringham is approximately 6 miles to the west and the Georgian town of Holt 12 miles to the south west. There are several National Trust properties in the area, namely Felbrigg 5 miles, Sheringham Park 8 miles and Blickling Hall 10 miles to the south.
