A Message from the Principal
AWARDS, AWARDS, AWARDS!!!
WESTERN AUSTRALIAN EDUCATION
AWARDS
Ardross Primary has been nominated in the category
of “Western Australian Primary School of the Year”
in the prestigious WA Education Awards. The
nomination was accompanied by a written
application addressing five criteria. I would like to
acknowledge the efforts of Mrs Bishop in developing
our nomination. A copy of our nomination can be
found on our school website. We hope that we can
progress on to the next stage of the awards, which is
a site visit by a judging panel. Further information
about the awards can be found at
www.det.wa.edu.au/educationawards
ASG NATIONAL EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING
AWARDS
Congratulations to Mrs Loney who has been nomi-
nated by two school community members for the
National Teaching Awards NEiTA. I received confir-
mation of Mrs Loney’s nominations last week and
presented both of them at assembly yesterday. The
NEiTA awards recognize and honour representatives
of inspirational teaching within their local communi-
ties. Well done Mrs Loney!!
WA BRUCE CUP TENNIS TEAM
Congratulations to Erica Bollweg and Jovana Glusac
who have been chosen to represent WA at the
National Schools Tennis Championship from
13 - 20 October. State representation at the junior
level is an honour and represents a significant
stepping stone in the ultimate achievement of senior
and national selection. Well done Erica and Jovana,
and wishing you good tennis!
INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION
Congratulations to Jocelyn Kwok who recently
placed third in the International Piano Competition
held in Singapore on 4 August. A sensational effort
Jocelyn, well done.
WASTE WISE INFINITY AWARDS
Ardross has also been nominated for an award
recognizing our outstanding efforts in Waste
management. Mrs Bishop has been nominated for an
individual award. Winners will be announced at a
Gala Dinner at the Old Swan Brewery on Friday,
31 August. Good luck Mrs Bishop and Ardross
Primary School! Should you know of any
outstanding efforts of our students at either the
State or National level, or achieving various awards
please make sure that you advise the school so we
can recognize them, where appropriate, in the
newsletter.
Greetings to staff, students, parents and community
members and welcome to this edition of the school
newsletter. Please read the newsletter carefully as it
contains important information and is the main
communication strategy between the school and
home.
ATTENDANCE
This week all schools across Western Australia were
required to complete an attendance audit for
Semester 1. An analysis of attendance at Ardross
indicates that there has been a slight fall in student
“regular” attendance rates at Ardross. Currently 84%
of students (379) attend regularly, between 90 - 100%,
13% of students (59) are deemed “indicated’ at risk,
attending between 80 - 89%, 3% of students (12) are
“moderate” at risk, attending between 60 - 79% and
1% of students (3) are identified as “severe” at risk,
attending between 0 - 59%. Although on closer
analysis, many of the absences have been recorded as
holidays, after seeking approval from me,
kindergarten attendance continues to be a major area
of concern. 50% of students are classified as “regular”
attendance students with 38% of students falling
below the 90% attendance target. I ask all parents
from Kindergarten to Year 7 to ensure that their child
attends regularly. All students who have been
identified as falling below the 90% attendance rate
(74 students) will be receiving a letter from the school
advising of their attendance rate.
ENROLMENTS 2013
Enrolments for 2013 closed on Friday 3 August. All
enrolment applications have now been assessed for
Kindergarten, Pre Primary and Years 1-7 according to
the local intake policy. All in boundary students were
offered a place, together with the out of boundary
students who already had siblings currently enrolled
at the school. Unfortunately not all enrolments were
able to be accepted. Letters of acceptance, and those
not being offered a place have been sent out this week.
Should you have any queries about the enrolment
process, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Acceptances for enrolment must be returned by
Friday, 31 August, with the formal enrolment process
completed before Friday, 14 September.
SCHOOL STRUCTURE
Based on the anticipated enrolments for 2013, I am
now starting to develop a school structure. It is
important that I know as close as possible, the
number of students who will be or not be returning to
Ardross next year. I thank those parents who have
already advised me that their child will not be
returning next year by placing the appropriate form
from previous newsletters in the bucket at the front
office. If you have not advised me up to this point can
you please return the slip from the newsletter 4 July
as soon as possible. Parents do not need to advise
me if their child will be continuing at Ardross
next year.

YEAR 6 CAMP
Congratulations to the Year 6 students, Mrs Bishop,
Mr Macmillan, Ms Riley, Mrs Putland, Mrs Doubell,
Mrs Logothetis and Mrs Causby who spent three days on camp
last week at Ern Halliday Camp School. All of the students par-
ticipated to their full capacity, and were involved in a vari-
ety of educational activities as well as team building and night
activities. I visited them on Monday and Tuesday evenings
and was very proud of their social skills and outstanding
behaviour. Well done Year 6’s.
JAPANESE STUDY TOUR
As community members are aware, the Japanese study tour
planned for August didn’t go ahead due to not enough students
enrolling from Japan. Jason Hutchison from Gold Intercultural
Tours has over 100 students coming to Perth for the October
program from 18 October - 6 November (students will need to
be home stayed from Sunday, 21 October until Tuesday, 6
November). We are looking at placing between 10 to 15 stu-
dents. All students will be 11 - 12 years of age and need to be
placed with students from Years 5 to 7. The hardest part of the
program is finding enough homestay placements. If you are
interested in having a Japanese student and have students in
Years 5-7, please consider filling in the expression of interest at
the end of this newsletter and returning it to the front office by
Friday, 17 August. This tour all students come from an eng-
lish immersion school, and have a good command of Eng-
lish.

P&C NEWS I would like to thank all those parents who regularly volunteer
to support our kids and our fantastic school. There are a lot of
parents who regularly help in the canteen, our uniform shop, in
the library and do a lot of other seemingly little things. Their
work certainly adds up to make a massive difference!
We will soon discuss what to spend the funds on which we all
worked so hard to raise over the last year. So if you have any
improvement suggestions, whether they are big or small, please
drop me a short email to [email protected], so that we
can consider your ideas when we allocate this year’s funding.
As the P&C, we try to not overwhelm parents with constant
fundraising. However, there are a few initiatives we run over
the year which are fairly easy to support. One of these was the
second-hand book collection. This year’s collection was another
amazing effort. I’d like to thank the parents who donated books,
as their donations resulted in our library and our lower class-
rooms having another few hundred ‘new’ books for kids to en-
joy. We also run a continual fundraiser with a label-making
company, Stuck On You. If you are already thinking of next
year, please keep our school in mind and mention us in the ap-
propriate field when placing your order.
The next P&C meeting is on Monday, 10 September at 7.30pm
in the staff room. It would be really great if you could drop by
and support our school and our kids by giving just a few hours
of your time.

CANTEEN NEWS
Late Orders
Orders arriving at the Canteen after 9.30am are a nightmare for
keeping our food wastage and costs under control, plus the inter-
ruption to what is usually a busy day. Can I please ask parents
to help their children by ensuring they put their orders in before
the school bell.
Sports Carnival and The Canteen!
I am working on the usual pre-ordering flyer/menu for the Sports
Carnival on 21 September. Please watch out for the flyer which
will be sent home and collect the special white 2’n’5 order bags
when they are out.
Volunteers Needed
We have a lot of spaces on the canteen later in the term. Please
either email me [email protected] or come into the
canteen to join the team.
Please continue to check the canteen notice board for other can-
teen updates.
Sticky Beak Lunch Wallets are back in stock! Reduced to
only $8.50. Available in Blue, Pink or Green. Free paddle pop
after six orders still applies!
See you at the canteen!

CANTEEN ROSTER
TOYS NEEDED
Kindy and Pre-Primary students spend a portion of their school
time on play-based learning. This means that there is a fair bit
of wear and tear, and toys need to be regularly replaced.
Therefore, if your children have outgrown any toys which are
still in good condition, you could consider donating them to the
school. In particular, we are looking for:
• any Lego and Duplo / puzzles for 3 to 6 year olds;
• dress up clothes (especially pirates, princes and
princesses, construction workers, doctors, police officers);
• sand toys (including shovels, buckets, sieves etc);
• K’nex, Mobilo or similar construction toys.
You can donate any of these items for the school’s early
childhood program. Please drop them off throughout the year in
Miss Brown’s classroom (Room 16). Helen Brown will distribute
the donations among all Early Childhood teachers.

WATERWISE TIP - BRUSHING YOUR TEETH
There is no need to leave the water running while you
brush. It uses up to 20 litres of water a minute. Simply
wet your toothbrush before you begin and use a glass of
water to rinse your mouth. Running water while brushing your
teeth for two minutes each day uses approximately 14,000
litres a year. Using a cup (250ml) of water while brushing
your teeth uses approximately 180 litres a year. This means
you will save 14,000 litres a year.
