ABM Students Hailed as Champs in FedEx Express / JA ITC 2018Fuel for cooking need not harm the environment. This is what Grin Paia does plus more.

An organic multipurpose charcoal briquette, this product conceptualized by Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) students China Zia Maranan and Janna Kaye Cuenca (composing Team Pawa Niugini) does not only function as a fuel for stoves and boilers but it also serves as a mosquito repellent, a fertilizer, light source, filter, and purifier.

The Grin Paia Charcoal is compressed into small, triangular-shaped blocks which make it burn longer than the standard charcoal blocks. Its triangular shape also makes the product ideal for overseas shipping because of its compact arrangement. It is 100% organic, having been made from biomass and natural binding agents, therefore, making its ash remains safe to be used as fertilizer.

The smokeless and mosquito-repelling feature of the product adds health value for the customers because it does not emit smoke and it decreases the risk of acquiring diseases such as

dengue and malaria – both of which are prevalent in Papua New Guinea. Grin Paia Charcoal also addresses deforestation concerns. Its ash remains may be renewed into its original form instead of cutting down trees. It may also be used as a tool to filter and purify water.

Developed to fulfill their team’s vision, “Bringing Power to the People”, they aim to help the citizens of Papua New Guinea in addressing both health and environmental problems – part of their task as they competed and won first place in the FedEx Express / Junior Achievement (JA) International Trade Challenge Local Finals 2018 on July 5, 2018 at the Yuchengco Institute for Advanced Studies, Tower II, RCBC Plaza, Makati City.

Almost 500 students from 40 different schools who attended the workshops in Metro Manila and Negros Occidental participated in the competition. They were given two weeks to prepare and submit a Market Entry Strategy Plan (MESP) featuring an outdoor product to be offered to the assigned target market, Papua New Guinea. After a comprehensive evaluation, the top 10

pairs were chosen to advance to the next round. These 10 teams coming from eight different schools presented their MESP to the panel and were judged based on a scoring rubric. The team was mentored and coached by ABM teacher Ms. Nina Mary Anne L. Villasanta, with the guidance of Dr. Lanie Santos, Learning Area Chair for CAPSTONE and WIBUSEN.Joining DLSL’s Pawa Niugini are Team Carranam of St. Scholastica’s College - Manila and Team Kawayan of St. Jude Catholic School which ranked 1st Runner-up and 2nd Runner-up, respectively. The six students represented the country in the ITC Asia Pacific Finals on August 12 to 16 in Singapore together with the other nine participating countries across the region.
