Founded in 1857 and the birthplace of Marks and Spencer Plc which still has a stall here, Kirkgate Market is a stunning Grade 1 listed building which has grown and expanded over the decades and is now proud bearer of the title of largest indoor market in Europe. The indoor market has a total footprint of c.75,000 sq ft, complimented by a 180-stall open market. Both are open 6 days a week (indoor market 7 days a week in December), from 8am to 5.30pm.

it is owned and managed by Leeds City Council, which has invested a huge £13m+ in a major refurbishment, including redesigning the layout and offer to bring it right up to date and offering everything today’s savvy shopper might expect – bright, spacious fresh food areas, space for speciality markets, a dedicated events space and a place to meet friends, sample cuisines from around the world, use the free wifi or just people-watch. these smart new spaces, launched in the Spring of 2016 sit alongside the stunning architecture and traditional market layout of the Victorian and edwardian halls, together providing a home to over 200 permanent businesses and up to 75 temporary stalls for speciality markets.

Kirkgate Market has recently been voted britain’s Favourite Market 2015, and was awarded the trip advisor award of excellence in 2014 and 2015. it has a large and loyal following on social media with over 20,000 twitter followers and 6,000 likes on Facebook as well as its own dedicated customer-facing website, www.leedsmarkets.co.uk – especially important in a city with over 37,000 students at our 3 universities, a significant ab/abC1 catchment area comprising Leeds city centre and wealthy surrounding areas such as Harrogate, Otley, ilkley and York.

the Council invests significantly in the promotion and marketing of Kirkgate Market locally, regionally and nationally and the Markets team has done many on- and off-site promotions and events working with partners such as West Yorkshire Playhouse, Johnson Press, Leeds rhinos, Leeds united and Monarch airlines to name just a few.

The launch of a new, dedicated food hall presents a completely new concept for the market. For the first time in its history, we have brought together meat, fish, game and other fresh food produce in one area. Our own well known fishmongers, butchers, seafood stalls and greengrocery are there – so a strong customer base is guaranteed.
