Staff categoriesProfessional: staff members are internationally recruited and

expected to serve at different duty stations throughout their career.

Openings for professional posts can be found at all duty stations.

Normally, an advanced university degree is required as well as

commensurate work experience.

General Service and related categories: staff members of any

nationality who are recruited locally from the area in which a

particular office is located. This category includes job such as

research assistants, clerks, security staff, trades and crafts, and

language teachers.

National Competitive Recruitment

Examination (NCRE)If you recently graduated from university and have limited or no work

experience, you may qualify to take this Examination. It is held

worldwide and is open to nationals of participating Member States.

Language positionsLanguage staff work as interpreters, translators, editors, and revisers,

in the six official languages of the United Nations and are recruited

through a competitive examination. The exam is held on an ad-hoc basis and

is posted on the our website.

Associate Expert Programme

This programme provides an opportunity for young professionals of donor

countries to gain professional experience in the United Nations. Donor

countries normally select candidates among their nationals; however, some

donors may agree to finance qualified candidates from developing countries.

Your ministry of foreign affairs can advise whether your country participates

and provide further details.

United Nations VolunteersVolunteering gives you an opportunity to positively transform people's lives,

including your own. Based in Bonn, Germany, the UNV programme is active in

140 countries and is represented worldwide through the offices of the United

Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
