HOW CAN WE SHIFT FROM BEING A

PASSIVE, CONSUMPTION-LED

SOCIETY TO ONE WHICH GETS

EXCITED ABOUT DOING, GIVING,

FIXING AND PARTICIPATING?

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF WE PUT A BUNCH OF

SOCIALLY-MINDED PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT

SKILLS WHO ARE FRUSTRATED WITH THE

SYSTEM TOGETHER WITH SOME GRASSROOTS

SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATORS?

WHY ARE SO MANY TALENTED AND SKILLED

PEOPLE IN THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES SPENDING

SO MUCH OF THEIR TIME AND ENERGY IN LONG

UNWIELDY LINEAR UNPRODUCTIVE PROCESSES

PUMPING MORE NOVELTY INTO THE CREAKING

PRODUCTION/CONSUMPTION SYSTEM?

collaborate and

experiment

IT WAS GREAT. AN OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH GREAT

PEOPLE FOR ONE THING, AND A CHANCE TO TEST

YOURSELF AGAINST THE CLOCK. IT WAS SELF-

ORGANISING, RAPID, AGILE AND ITERATIVE AND IT DIDN'T

REALLY FEEL LIKE WORK.

HOW WOULD A BIGGER, MORE STRUCTURED ENTITY

REACT TO THIS MUCH GREAT INPUT PRODUCED SO

QUICKLY? IT WOULD HAVE TO SERIOUSLY QUESTION ITS

PROCESSES AND POLICIES IF YOU CAN GENERATE SO

MUCH STUFF SO WELL WITHOUT THEM.

WE DID MORE WORK, OF BETTER QUALITY, IN 48 HRS

THAN AN AGENCY WOULD TAKE WEEKS TO DELIVER

Page 16: Are you Good for Nothing?

HOW CAN WE HELP ACCELERATE AND SCALE THE

WORK OF GRASSROOTS SOCIAL AND

ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATORS WHO IN MANY

CASES ARE INNOVATING MORE RADICALLY THAN

THE LARGE CORPORATIONS?

What is Hackney Yoga Project?

Hackney Yoga Project (HYP) is a pilot project developing a best practice model for working with yoga and the refugee and asylum-seeking in Hackney, one of the most deprived areas in the UK.

The mission is to improve the quality of life for these women through yoga practice, by creating a safe and respectful space and removing barriers to participation (travel cost, childcare, language and misperception being the main ones).    The women HYP works with have been displaced from their homelands due to war and natural disaster.

They come from Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda, Iran, India and more.

Many have experienced gender based violence and some, torture.

Some are also destitute – not street homeless but living off charity and friend’s hand-outs.

Page 35: Are you Good for Nothing?

The Brief

HYP is about to go on a major fundraising push and is in urgent need of a visual identity to help them on this mission The challenge is to create a visual identity/look and feel for HYP which helps to express their story and mission in an engaging and soulful way.

Use design to help diffuse the ‘critical tension’ that exists for women labelled as refugees and asylum seekers and the challenges that creates for them.

Design will initially roll out on the web ideally using a platform which the HYP can easily populate and update themselves e.g Wordpress/Tumblr
