MUSHERS MEETING
The Mushers Meeting will take place at 19.00 at Café Sport, Luossabacken, 981 39 Kiruna(Kiruna’s downhill ski slope) on Friday 24th March.
Café Sport will offer a good value dinner for around 80kr per person from 18.00. We would encourage all mushers to eat there and say hi to their fellow competitors before the race! Beer and drinks are also available after the mushers meeting.
RACE DAY
This year’s race will be one of several events taking place at Luossabacken on Saturday 25th March as part of Kiruna’s Spring Festival ‘Våryan’. Tobacco Trail will have its own parking area. Each competitor should park according to your race bib number (this will be published prior to the race).
Please do not use long stake-‐out lines in the parking place: dogs should be kept around the car/trailer. And please make sure you clean up your parking place before you leave the start area.
REGISTRATION
The Secretariat is also based at Luossabacken and will be signposted from the main car park. Registration opens at 08.30 on Saturday 25th March. Please make sure you bring all the necessary papers with you (Chip List, Dog Passports) plus the mandatory dog food to be weighed. Attachment: CHIP LIST
PRE RACE VET CHECK
Vet checks will take place at Luossabacken car park from 09.00 on Saturday.
Please be aware of the de-‐worming rules in your own country and Sweden for your outbound and return journey. You can buy de-‐worming medicine at home and contact the Race Leader, BirgittaFernstrom, if you need a certificate from the vet.
STARTING TIMES
14.00: LDU open class in 2-‐minute intervals. 16.00: LDL limited class and Junior class in 2 minute intervals.
You must be ready to be positioned in the start area 5 minutes in advance of your official start time.
TRAIL, CHECKPOINTS & RESTING POT
GPX-‐file with the race track can be downloaded from our website very soon!
Juniors
The Junior race is 103km in total. The trail leaves Luossabacken towards Sekkustuga where the teams turn and head back to Jakkala cabin. Teams rest overnight at the cabin and start again on Sunday morning.
There is no access for handlers at Jakkala and depot bags should be given to the checkpoint official prior to the race start.
LDL, Limited Class
The LDL distance is approx. 184km in total. There is one checkpoint at the half way point in OvreSoppero where teams have a mandatory stop of 6 hours plus time adjustment.
Ovre Soppero checkpoint is situated on the river. Food and resting places (for purchase) are available nearby. Cash only!
LDU, Open Class
The LDU distance is approx. 344km in total. There are three checkpoints at Ovre Soppero 1, Saivomuotka and Ovre Soppero 2. There is a mandatory stop for all teams at Ovre Soppero 1 of 6 hours plus time adjustment. A further 2 hours resting pot is to be taken between checkpoints Saivomuotka and/or Ovre Soppero 2.
!!!! Please note, the minimal resting pot has been designed to allow teams to create their own resting strategy according to their training and we fully expect teams to rest longer than the mandatory 8 hours. It is not a recommendation to rest only 8 hours during the race. Any musher choosing to rest the minimum 8 hours will have his or her dog team scrutinized by the race vets and their decision is final over whether the team is fit to continue from each checkpoint.!!!!
See above for information on Ovre Soppero checkpoint. At Saivomuotka food (for purchase) and accommodation is also available. Credit cards accepted.
IMPORTANT! At Ovre Soppero 2, food and resting places are available at Gode Herdens Kyrka only – this is different to Ovre Soppero 1! More information will be available at the mushers meeting.
HANDLERS
Depot bags should be left behind the staging area perimeter. From here mushers can collect and return the bags themselves. No handlers within the staging area.
Depot bags can be checked at any time by race officials.
RULES & MANDATORY EQUIPMENT
The Tobacco Trail follows three sets of race rules: IFSS, National Additional Rules and Tobacco Trail Rules.
