AREA 48 OCTOBER 2013 Issue 1 AREA 48 October 2013 AREA 48 – OFFICIALLY WINNERS!! IN THIS ISSUE Welcome to this edition of the Area Newsletter – it’s been a little while since we’ve had one and certainly overdue. There has been a lot going on between us all across our Area and a lot more coming up. Bridport’s been boozing, Guernsey has been ducking about, Christchurch has been at the carnival and Bournemouth has been, well, been the destination of choice for the elderly this summer…. I have encouraged your Chairmen and Secretaries to let me have your news so that we can share the fun both through newsletters but also via our Facebook page on t’internet – if you haven’t done so please check out www.facebook.com/pages/Area-48- Round-Table. It’s an easy way to help each other publicise events and spread our reach plus seeing what others get up to means we can adopt/nick ideas for meetings or fundraising. Your exec is in the process of fixing a couple of Area events including a Christmas social (think progressive supper but with pubs….) and holding a mini Area rally combined with the Area AGM here in Guernsey in the Spring. It’s really not that far to travel over here and the idea is to get rid of the formal business on a Saturday afternoon followed by a dinner with the TWAGS that evening – if numbers work then we can even lay on babysitting of you want to make a family weekend of it! Meantime please do let me know when your charter dinners or ladies nights are. I am looking forward to joining in the celebrations with Bournemouth at their 85 th Charter in a fortnight or so but what are you guys doing in Bridport or Shaftesbury? Get in touch! Anyway, hope you find this useful and any suggestions always welcome. YIT Alasdair NSW2013 Champions!!! Page 4 NSW 2014 – a call to Arms Page 5 Welcome! by Alasdair Davidson, Area Chairman

AREA 48 – OFFICIALLY WINNERS!! IN THIS ISSUE

Welcome to this edition of the Area Newsletter – it’s been a little while since we’ve had one and certainly overdue. There has been a lot going on between us all across our Area and a lot more coming up. Bridport’s been boozing, Guernsey has been ducking about, Christchurch has been at the carnival and Bournemouth has been, well, been the destination of choice for the elderly this summer….

I have encouraged your Chairmen and Secretaries to let me have your news so that we can share the fun both through newsletters but also via our Facebook page on t’internet – if you haven’t done so please check out www.facebook.com/pages/Area-48-Round-Table. It’s an easy way to help each other publicise events and spread our reach plus seeing what others get up to means we can adopt/nick ideas for meetings or fundraising.

Your exec is in the process of fixing a couple of Area events including a Christmas social (think progressive

supper but with pubs….) and holding a mini Area rally combined with the Area AGM here in Guernsey in the Spring.

I am looking forward to joining in the celebrations with Bournemouth at their 85

th Charter in a fortnight or so but what

are you guys doing in Bridport or Shaftesbury? Get in touch!

Anyway, hope you find this useful and any suggestions always welcome.

Guernsey held their annual Harbour Carnival on 9 August 2014 which saw them take over the harbour of St Peter Port for an evening of fun and game – not to mention a few ducks. This event has gone from strength to strength and is a great community event raising thousands for charity whilst laying on a true party for Guernsey.

This year in addition to the usual man powered flight challenge, tug of war across the harbour arms and ladies dinghy races there was an additional corporate duck race to complement the existing mini duck races.

In June Bridport RT held a beer festival.

It was a festival at which they sold a lot of beer.

Pure genius!

Not content with beer…..

Clearly arranging hangovers for the whole community wasn’t enough for Bridport as they built probably the best float ever…..

….although I’d recommend staying clear of the women next time you visit – it would take more than the contents of the keg under the bomber to make this look attractive.

AREA 48 OCTOBER 2013 | Issue 1 4

This year’s NSW proved to be an amazing weekend – Round Table at the seaside! Seven gallant athletes at the height of their form trekked across (and then up and then across and then down) to the sun kissed resort of Ilfracombe along with over 550 other Tablers to battle for glory. And drink beer. Then more beer.

This year’s events were a little different with beach samba soccer, volley ball and boules on offer in addition to the usual tug of war, swimming, cricket, darts, etc.

The lads from Ilfracombe laid on an amazing weekend of activities all accompanied by great evening events and plenty of Tabler appropriate entertainment (with some delightful young ladies to keep us company if needed -including their Ladies Circle!).

For the first time Area 48 even won a trophy – the many long nights of exhausting training paid off as Charl Vosloo and Craig Dobbs both from New Milton rose to glory and secured a trophy for Area. It takes absolutely nothing from their achievement that it happened to be for the Novelty Sport – crazy golf.

National Sporting Weekend 2013

AREA 48 OCTOBER 2013 | Issue 1 5

The next NSW is being hosted by Winchester and Area 1 – just right next door so no excuse why we can’t lay on a show of strength as an Area. Full details can be found at http://www.acalltoarms.org.uk/.

Please take a look at the website and get your deposits in – the more of us who go along the better the chances of winning the whole competition as it really is a numbers game! Guernsey are already looking at sending at least 1o so how about the rest of you???

There is a National Council Meeting taking place on the 19 October – please do read the reports published on the National website and let me have any comments to forward onto our Regional Rep. If you don’t put your point forward then you can’t really moan about what they get up to on our behalf!
