Mawson street names: The AntarcticconnectionByJohnMyrtleHoadleyCharles Archibald (Arch) Hoadley (1887-1947)was a geologist member of the AustralasianAntarctic Expedition. Later in life he was anadvocate for technical education in Australiaandwaschiefcommissioner forVictoria in thescoutingmovement.HisAntarcticinvolvementis remembered through Hoadley Street inMawson.MacphersonRobertsonMany years ago the industrialist, SirMacpherson Robertson (1859-1945) was wellknown in Australia for his MacRobertsonconfectionary. HenevervisitedAntarcticabutas a millionaire he was a generousphilanthropist who made a number ofsubstantial gifts in support of Antarcticexpeditions. Sir Douglas Mawson namedMacRobertsonLandinAntarcticainhishonourand MacRobertson Street, Mawson, also

commemorates his support for Antarcticexploration.Names such as Mawson, Shackleton, Mertz,Ninnis and Hurley, all have an importantAntarcticconnection,butotherMawsonstreetnamescommemorate lesserknown individualssuch as members of Antarctic explorationteams who lost their lives throughmisadventure. ArsonWhilesomefiresaretheresultonenvironmentalfactors,manyfiresaredeliberatelylit.Arsoncanhaveadevastating impactonthecommunity. Ithas the potential to destroy property and theenvironment,causesignificant financial lossandendangerlives.Individualscancommitarsononhomes,property,vehicles, buildings and the environment. In theACT, ACT Fire and Rescue and ACT Rural FireService are theprimary responders to fires. If afire is deemed as being suspicious, it is theninvestigatedbyACTPolicing.BushfirearsonTraditionally in the ACT, there is an increase insuspicious grassland and bushland fires in thesummer months (December to March). It isestimated that over half of the bushfires inAustraliaeachyeararedeliberatelylitorstartedinsuspiciouscircumstances.ACTPolicing,theACTEmergencyServicesAgencyand ACT Rural Fire Service work on an ACTBushfireArsonPreventionStrategy.Thisincludesdeterminingbushfire‘hotspots’basedonrecentfireandarson-relatedincidents.Membersof the communitymaybe the first tonotice suspicious behaviour or activity in theirneighbourhood,soweneedyourhelptomonitoropenareassuchasparksorgrasslandsacrosstheACT,andpreventincidentsbeforetheyoccur.ReportingarsonYoucanhelpprotectourcommunityfromarsonby reporting any suspicious activity to CrimeStopperson1800300000orvia theACTCrimeStopperswebsite.

AGLemailscamAGL Energy (AGL) iswarning people of an AGLbranded email scam which contains maliciousmalware that has potential to access personalinformation. The scam email presents as an e-Accountandasksreaderstoclickonalink.AGLadvises it will never send an email asking forpersonalbankingorfinancialdetails.Anyone receiving a suspicious email shoulddeleteitimmediatelyor,ifopened,notclickonany links within the email. AGL advisesrecipients of any suspicious emails to runantivirus software and block the sender byaddingtothejunkfolderlist.AGLhasreportedthescamemailtoScamwatch,the Australian Competition and ConsumerCommission (ACCC), and theAustralianFederalPolice. Anyone with concerns relating to thisscam email should call AGL on 131 245 orcontact Scamwatch on 1300 795 995 or visitwww.scamwatch.gov.au.
