Later in life he was an advocate for technical education in Australia and was chief commissioner for Victoria in the scouting movement. His Antarctic involvement is remembered through Hoadley Street in Mawson. Macpherson Robertson Many years ago the industrialist, Sir Macpherson Robertson (1859-1945) was well known in Australia for his MacRobertson confectionary. He never visited Antarctica but as a millionaire he was a generous philanthropist who made a number of substantial gifts in support of Antarctic expeditions. Sir Douglas Mawson named MacRobertson Land in Antarctica in his honour and MacRobertson Street, Mawson, also commemorates his support for Antarctic exploration. Names such as Mawson, Shackleton, Mertz, Ninnis and Hurley, all have an important Antarctic connection, but other Mawson street names commemorate lesser known individuals such as members of Antarctic exploration teams who lost their lives through misadventure. Hoseason Street, Jelbart Street and Scoble Place are all named in memory of young men who drowned in accidents in the Antarctic region in the late 1940s or early 1950s. John Myrtle is a Mawson resident and historical researcher - [email protected] Awards At the ACT AGM held recently, the CPO, Assistant Commissioner Rudi Lammers, presented the ACT NHW Member of the Year Award to Sylvia and Brian Carr of Curtin and the CPO Award to Detective Station Sergeant Joanne Cameron. The CPO was thanked for his support of NHW ACT during his term as CPO.
