Carers Voice Summer 2016

This year’s Carers Week celebrations took place from 6th - 12th June.

Throughout the week ECC staff shared information about Carers Centre services and activities and talked to residents, raising awareness of carers’ needs at various venues: Tesco-Ponders End; North Middx. Hospital; Asda-Southgate; Sainsbury-Highlands; Chase Farm Hospital; Sainsbury A10; Albany Park Leisure Centre and Barclays in Enfield Town.

On Saturday 11th June, ECC held its annual Family Fun Day outside Enfield Town Library. Over 400 people attended!

Entertainment on the day included amazing performances by The North London Street Dance Academy and Fiction Dance, guest appearances by Peppa Pig, live singing performance by Tijana, children’s entertainer Jo Jingles and the Deegan Academy of Irish Dancers. See inside for more pictures.

WHAT IS THE ZEBRAS CHILDRENS CLUB ?

The Co- Founders and Directors of Zebras Children’s Club C.I.C , are also parents/carers of a child aged 10 years old with Autism and Learning Disabilities (LD). Harriet Piercy & Jamie Ashton’s son Joshua was diagnosed a few months before his 8th birthday. Having struggled for many years with mainstream school, they eventually took the brave decision to educate their son at home. They had previously been told that if Joshua’s behaviour, which at the time, was challenging didn't improve, the only future he would have was a care home and medication. They continued home schooling and began to notice small changes and improved development. They were unable to use regular respite services as Joshua experienced separation anxiety, which is common among those with Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

After noticing a lack of recreational activities where parents and carers could stay with their child/children and gain support, they decided to start a small group where children with Autism and LD could get together, learning through play, using a life skills and humanistic approach, as they did with Joshua at home.

So the hard work began, and with lots of patience and determination, on 21st of February 2015, Zebras Childrens Club C.I.C was opened to the public by Nick De Bois M.P. Zebras currently receives funding from Enfield Council, sponsorship from Metaswitch Networks, and works in partnership with Enfield Voluntary Action, Ponders End Community Trust and F.C Enfield. Feedback from over 25 families who attend the club agree that there’s not another service where their children are

accepted, can develop and enjoy leisure and fun without judgement. The club helps parent and carers too as they have a chance to talk and share experiences. Future plans include developing a modest leisure/day centre for those with disabilities to use our unique services. Written by - Co founders and Directors Zebras Childrens Club C.I.Cini aim

Zebras recently opened a service for Adults called ZAG- Zebras Adult Group, which provides adults with Autism and LD with a chance to socialise and develop skills, with others in a relaxed, safe environment. ZAG takes place every fortnight on Tuesday 11.00 till 1.00pm and costs £6.50. Carers are welcome at ZAG too and can enjoy fun, free refreshments and be waited on for a change. Zebra also run “Employ-able” helping those with disabilities and mental health difficulties gain voluntary employment with support .

Home Library Service If mobility, disability, or caring responsibilities make it difficult for you or the person you

care for to visit the library, then the library can come to you. They deliver everywhere,

including sheltered housing and residential homes. There are no charges for this ser-vice. If you have an ECC Carers Gold Card you can also get additional services

such as: extended borrowing times, no charges to borrow DVDs and CDs. Con-

tact Enfield Carers Centre if you don’t already have a Gold Card and we’ll arrange one

for you.

There are many titles available in different languages and formats:

Large-print and small print books

Recorded books on tapes or CDs

In addition to books, there are a range of DVDs and CDs to suit every taste.

Home Library users are visited once every four weeks.

As part of the need to reduce expenditure, Enfield Council’s Adult Social Care has identified that some service users, funded to live in care homes, are also being funded to attend day centres.

As the care homes are paid to provide a 24 hours per day, 7 days per week service, the additional costs to access a day centre are seen as a duplication of

funding. In view of this, separate funding for day services for these service users is now being removed. It should be noted that this does not apply to service users who live in a ‘supported living’ environment, as they are funded separately for day services, so no duplication exists.

For many service users, this will be a real problem, as access to day services provides a way of meeting friends and taking part in group activities outside their care home. If this is taken away, there is a real fear that people will become isolated and institutionalised.

Ideally, care homes will provide interesting and stimulating daytime activities for their residents, and they do have a duty to do this. However, there is real concern that they will not be able to achieve this within their limited resources.

Before any existing day services can be removed, every service user affected by this policy MUST have an assessment of their needs and a new Care & Support Plan MUST be produced. This should detail how the fee being paid to the care home (i.e. the Personal Budget) will be used to meet all the ‘eligible’ needs of the service user, especially in the provision of stimulating and appropriate daytime activities.

The production of the Care & Support Plan should involve the service user and any concerned family member and the resulting plan should be made available to them.

Any service user who is not able to understand and fully participate in the new assessment and planning process must have an advocate to act on their behalf and provide support. This could be a friend or a family member, but if no appropriate person is available, the local authority MUST provide an independent advocate.

Carers’ groups, particularly in the area of learning disabilities, have real concerns about this policy, although they do accept the basis on which is being adopted.

Debt relief orders Replying to or enforcement of

county court claims
