US sales to Europe have been relatively unaffected by the gains made by Argentina with market share holding steady near 10 percent.

Argentina’s share of shelled peanut exports to key European markets doubled between 2004 and 2007 in response to growing production, improved quality, and attractive pricing. Much of gains in these markets have come at the expense of China whose market share has dropped from 40 percent to 20 percent. Difficulty in meeting the EU’s strict aflatoxin limits along with elimination of the rebate of the EU’s 5 percent VAT have contributed to the decline. Reduced peanut production and increased demand in China have also played a role in reducing exports to the region. US sales to Europe have been relatively unaffected by the gains made by Argentina with market share holding steady near 10 percent.

PRICES U.S. soybean export bids, FOB Gulf, in March averaged $371 per ton, slightly lower than the previous month. Seasonal slowdown in sales and shipments, and prospects for record crops in South America are pressuring export bids downward. As of the week-ending March 25, 2010, U.S. soybean sales commitments (outstanding sales plus accumulated exports) to China totaled 21.7 million tons, compared to 16.7 million a year ago. Total commitments to the world amounted to 36.4 million tons compared to 29.1 million for the same period last year.

U.S. Gulf Soybean Export Bids

5 year Average (2003/04-2008/09) = $326

TRADE CHANGES IN 2009/10 • U.S. soybean exports are boosted 0.7 million tons to a record 39.3 million supported

by unusually large shipments in March despite strong competition from South America.

• Brazil’s soybean exports are up 0.7 million tons to 26.3 million supported by seasonal

competitiveness in key markets, particularly in China. • China’s soybean imports are up 1.0 million tons to a record 43.5 million due to larger

crush demand. • China’s rapeseed imports are up 0.3 million tons to 1.8 million in response to

continued large volume coming from Canada. • Japan’s soybean imports are cut 0.3 million tons to 3.6 million due to slow crush

demand and are partially offset by larger soy meal imports. • India’s soybean meal exports are down 0.3 million tons to 2.2 million due to reduced

crush demand.
