Tips on what to do after the handshakeis done and before you sign for a new joCONGRATULATIONS, you’ve got a job offer! The question is, do you actually want to workfor the company? During an interview i t’seasy to be so focused on selling yourself as acandidate that you forget to assess whetherthe role is right for you. Before you sign, hereare seven questions to ask.
1. Does this job add to my CV?
When you’ve been job hunting for a while,it can be tempting to accept the first thingthat comes along – but failing to considerthe longer-term career implications can be acostly mistake.
John Lees, career coach and author of The
Interview Expertsuggests asking whether theposition will enhance your CV. “How will ithelp or hinder the way you present yourselfto a recruiter in five years’ time? Have youdone this kind of job before? If so, what’s newabout it? What will you learn in this job? Howlong will you keep learning?”
Taking a job as a ste pping stone to some-thing better isn’t necessarily a bad thing, butyou need to be clear how the role will helpyou reach your ultimate career goals.
2. What is the benefits package?
You may have been asked for your salaryexpectations in the interview, but it’s crucialto know the details of the benefits packagebefore you accept the job.
“What is the salary and how does the bonussystem work? How much annual leave willyou receive? While these questions shouldnever be asked in a job interview, it’s abso-lutely crucial to clarify this information onceyou get the job,” says Michael Bennett man-
aging director of ReThink Recruitment.
3. What parts of the offer do I want tonegotiate?
Once you have details of the benefits pack-age, it’s time to work out what matters to you
most from the long list of things included inthe deal at this stage: money, flexible work-ing, leave, relocation or travel packages, startdate, location, pension, health benefits, car, even job content.
“The important thing to realise is that youcan only ask for leverage on a maximum ofone or two points, otherwise it sounds as ifyou are being difficult,” warns John.
“Secondly, never try to re-negotiate some-thing you have previously agreed as this is
seen as unprofessional and can cause thewhole deal to collapse.”
4. Can I negotiate job content?
This can also be a good time to negotiate whatyou will actually be doing in the job.
“You certainly won’t have the same leveragefor at least another 18 months or so of takingthe job, so if you feel there is any possibilitythat you can tweak the job description so thatit suits you better, try including this as partof the deal,” says John.
5. What’s the team like?
You could ask the hiring manager about theteam you’ll be working with – but there’s
nothing like meeting them and seeing youractual desk.“While the formalities of a written offer
are being completed, ask to spend a coupleof hours with the team you will be joining,”advises John.
“This confirms your strong interest in the
job, but also helps you to be sure twill fit in, and tells you a great deorganisational culture. If the orgaturns down your request, you migwhat’s in store.”
Michael suggests asking to speaperson who currently occupies ththem what they enjoy about the joing at the company in general. If ttion is currently empty, try to findhappened to the person who prevthe role.”
6. What opportunities are thermotion?
Whether you’re set on climbing thladder, or keen to use the role as astone to something better, you neewhat development opportunities a
“Ask if the company offers strucing and development programmeoften they review them,” suggests“Is there a set path for promotionHow long do you have to work at tbefore being promoted, on averag
7. How will success be measure
Finally, be sure to ask what’s expeduring the first three months on tpotential employer can’t give a cleit may be a red flag that they haveobjectives for the role.
“Clarity about what’s expected owhat problems you’re expected tohelp enormously with the first 90 job,” explains John. “It’s also usewhat they see in you – the reasonsbeen hired are closely linked to w
organisation will see as success.“To get a handle on the way you
judged within three or four monthing the role, ask about preferred oand what’s expected of you so youany unpleasant surprises.”l Source: careerbuilder.co.uk
