Path to successful career
is debated as universitydubbed a ‘waste of time’THE routes available to finding workare currently highly politicised.
Apprenticeships, internships, uni-versity fees and more are regularly inthe news, with the pros and cons of allkinds of methods for making a start inthe workplace debated endlessly, andparties making pledges based on theirperceived value of each.
The Telegraph recently reported thatcreative degrees, commonly derided (bythose who don’t have one) as a wasteof time that makes someone unem-
ployable, are actually among the bestqualifications to have if you’re lookingfor work.
Not surprisingly, each path has dif-ferent benefits, and will be suited todifferent people.
The traditional route of the top stu-dents going to university to be guaran-teed a good job may seem to be on theway out, with an employment crisisthat saw graduates stacking shelves onWorkfare to keep earning their Jobseek-er’s Allowance, which dominated thenews during the financial downturn.
But 70 per cent of students find them-selves in employment after six months, rising to 80 per cent for students oncreative degrees, showing that it is stilla good path to a career for those willingto put in the work.
Creative degrees work so well, expertsclaim, because of their close links tospecific industries such as journal-ism, fashion and design. But the skills
that creative students develop are alsohighly transferable. An illustrator, forexample, could find work in publish-ing, advertis-ing, animation, media production, graphic design,or the marketingdepartment of alarger business. Itis a good reminder
for all that flexibility is often the key tosuccess.
Both the role and image of appren-ticeships has come a long way over theyears. Although older generations maystill have a tendency to see them as thelast resort for those who weren’t goodenough to earn a university place, suchan outdated view currently couldn’t befurther from the truth.
As tuition fees rise and looming stu-dent debts become ever larger, appren-ticeships are increasingly being seen as
a desirable alternative to university ina wide range of fields. Mechanics andbricklayers still offer apprenticeships, yes, but so do lawyers, accountants, journalists, and a whole host of otherindustries. Apprenticeships have thebenefits of earning while learning, andgetting through the front door of anindustry quicker than those who havechosen the university route.
Apprenticeship success stories maysee someone established in an indus-try as a specialist, on a high wage andlargely debt-free by their mid-20s. It’sno wonder political parties consistently
try to one-up each other on how manyapprenticeships they plan to create.
Probably the most controversial of these three routes to employment, internships are nonetheless a fact of life for those seeking work in manyindustries. Even those with universitydegrees may find themselves workingas interns for a period on their way tofull employment.
Internships are a good way to experi-ence a career to see if it is the rightpath, as well as get a foot in the door at
more prestigious companies or in morecompetitive industries. However, theyare also often unpaid, which is whythey are often undertaken by studentswho are already receiving financialsupport.
There is no ‘right’ route to take toemployment, and no one is ever guar-anteed a job just because they tick theright boxes. It is simply important toweigh up each option to work out thebest way to learn, earn, train, and havethe balance of a personal life as well –each will take you as far as you want togo, provided you put in the work.
