Conducting the frst lesson or a six year old

Have a chat, ask the student what music they like, what they might already know

about the iano, Invite them to lay something i! they know anything

Sitting

'nsure their !eet can touch the ground, i! they can(t give them a little !oot stool

)ack straight, arms at the right angle to suort the hand, and not drag it down%

Place hands over the knees whilst sitting to achieve the correct hand osition

with curved *ngers + this is !or tone uality, to ensure the note is hit in thecorrect lace% -tudent should be sat towards the edge o! the stool i! their !eet

can touch the ground, this is to allow !or movement !rom one end to the other o!

Aural game# ask the child to sing or cla the rhythm back o! a melody samle

Playing# introduce a simle *ve *nger e$ercise. each *nger resting on a note,

with the *ngers numbered !rom one to *ve, I call out a number and the student

lays that note, !or say !our counts%

'$lain how the notes are named !rom A/", and oint out how the black notes

are groued, and how the attern o! the keys is reeated all the way u theiano%

"ame# -how the student where D is, as this is easy to locate between the two

black notes, and ask them to *nd all the other Ds on the keyboard%

Books to recommend or a young beginner 

Primers should be recommended !or very young students, as their eyesight may

not be !ully develoed, and the bright colouring and illustrations will aeal to

the child%
