New Area Director in Baltimore County

and fundraising; staff and volunteer oversight; public relations; strategic planning; and facility management. Prior to joining Extension in February 2017, her accomplishments have included consistent and effective interaction

with state and local government officials, organizations and community leadership to accomplish the program objectives

of the organizations she served. A hallmark of her career was the successful $1.9 million capital fundraising project for the renovation of an historic 14,000 square-foot facility, which became the new location for the Dorchester Center for the Arts. Calibrating Your Manure SpreaderSpring is upon us and many folks are starting to

spread their winter manure. Before spreading your manure it is important to properly calibrate your manure spreader to minimize the potential for over or under applying nutrients to a crop.

The Maryland Department of Agriculture requires that operators document each time a spreader calibration is completed. Keep those records with your nutrient management plan as the inspector may ask to see them when auditing your plan. The documentation needs to include the calculations you used to determine the nutrient rate.

There are two common methods for calibrating manure spreaders:• Weight-area method - This method is appropriate

when dealing with solid manure. The use of the weight-area method is not advisable for calibrating spinner spreaders applying poultry litter because a portion of the litter often slides beyond the collection surface. This method involves spreading manure on a collection surface of known dimensions, weighing the manure on the collection surface, and calculating the application rate. The application rate is then converted to a per-acre basis.

• Load-area method - This is a reliable method when using spreading solid manure, liquid manure, or poultry litter. The load-area method is more accurate for poultry litter. This method involves spreading several loads of manure on the field, measuring the area, and then calculating the manure application rate for that area. The application rate is then converted to a per-acre basis

For either method, it is important to keep the spreader and tractor settings consistent when calibrating and applying manure, as any change in equipment settings or ground speed will change the application rate. Spreaders must also be re-calibrated if the density or consistency of the manure changes.

Contact your Nutrient Management Advisor, Erika Taylor today to help calibrate your manure spreader or visit http://ter.ps/nmce for detailed instructions.

This chart groups herbicides by their modes of action to assist you in selecting herbicides

1) to maintain greater diversity in herbicide use and 2) to rotate among effective herbicides with different

sites of action to delay the development of herbicide resistance.

This chart lists premix herbicides alphabetically by their trade names so you can identify the premix’s component herbicides and their respective site-of-action groups.

REPEATED USE OF HERBICIDES WITH THE SAME SITE OF ACTION CAN RESULT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF HERBICIDE-RESISTANT WEED POPULATION

enough to interfere with their planting operation, but there are some big benefits still to be had from as few as two more weeks of growth past the average burn-down date. These include moisture retention during dry spells, more organic matter, less compaction, more rainwater infiltration, and an increase in the amount of Nitrogen that stays in the soil profile. Most recent model planters can easily handle up to several additional weeks of grass cover crop growth.

Look for summer field day dates to be announced soon.
