HEARING FOOTSTEPS: The Dodgers continue their five-game
homestand (2-1) with the second of three games against the Arizona
Diamondbacks following last night’s 9-7 comeback win. The Dodgers,
who are a season high-tying 13 games over .500, have made up 5.5
games in the divisional standings since the All-Star break and trail the
Giants by just 1.0 game in the National League West, the closest
they’ve been since May 15 (1.0 GB). Following the Arizona series, the
Dodgers have an off-day Monday before a brief three-game trip to
battle the Rockies in Denver.
The Dodgers own the second-best home winning percentage
in the National League (.627), trailing only the Cubs (.673).
Los Angeles is 23-7 (.767) at home since May 17, after
beginning the year 9-12 at Dodger Stadium.
The Dodgers have gone 18-4 in their last 22 home games
against the D-backs since April 19, 2014 and are unbeaten in
their last eight home series against Arizona (7-0-1), last
dropping a set to the Snakes at Dodger Stadium in June 2013.
Los Angeles continues to lead the NL Wild Card chase, 2.0
games ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals
DID THAT REALLY HAPPEN?: The Dodgers won a wild, 9-7
game over the D-backs last night, as the teams combined for 12 runs in
a back-and-forth seventh inning. According to the Elias Sports Bureau,
it marked only the third time in 19,602 National League games for the
Dodgers (since 1890) that the club allowed as many as seven runs in
the top half of an inning and responded with at least five runs in the
bottom of the frame. It happened in the franchise’s first NL game April
19, 1890 at Boston in 15-9 Brooklyn loss (third inning, Boston – which
chose to bat first in that game – scored eight, Brooklyn answered with
six) and again July 18, 1957 vs. the Cardinals in a 10-9, 11-inning
Dodger win at Ebbets Field (ninth inning, St. Louis took a 9-4 lead and
the Dodgers forced extra innings with a five-run rally).
Chase Utley, who hit the game-tying home run in the seventh
inning, will be recognized as the Dodgers’ 2016 Heart and
Hustle Award tonight during pregame ceremonies. Dodger
legend Don Newcombe and first base coach George
Lombard will present Utley with the award on behalf of the
MLB Players Alumni Association.
GETTING OFFENSIVE: In 22 July games (14-8), Los Angeles leads
the National League in on-base percentage (.345), while ranking
among the league’s best in batting average (.272, 2nd), hits (216, 3rd),
runs (110, 3rd) and slugging percentage (.436, 4th).
Howie Kendrick has posted a .365/.443/.576 slashline in 22
games this month, going 31-for-85 with 15 runs, nine
doubles, three homers and 10 RBI, and ranks third in the NL
in July batting average:
NL Batting Leaders, July
1. Joey Votto, CIN .412
2. Martin Prado, MIA .367
3. Howie Kendrick, LAD .365 (31-for-85)
4t. Javier Baez, CHC .351
4t. Daniel Murphy, WAS .351
Not to go unnoticed, Corey Seager (.333, 29-for-87, 7th NL),
Justin Turner (.311, 28-for-90, 18th NL), Adrián González
(.306, 26-for-85, 25th, NL) and Yasmani Grandal (.300, 18-
for-60) are all hitting over .300 this month.
Kendrick has hit safely in nine of 10 games against Arizona
this year, batting .417 (15-for-36) with nine runs, two doubles
and an RBI, and his .355 career batting average (38-for-107)
in 28 games against Arizona is the sixth-best mark among
active players (min. 100 PA).
Turner leads the National League in both home runs (14) and
RBI (39) in 41 games since June 10.
BANGED UP: The Dodgers have had 22 players spend time on the
disabled list this year, tied for the most by a National League club
(also: 2015 Mets) and for the second most by any team in the last 30
years since 1987, behind only the 2012 Red Sox (27).
THE NEW SENSATION: Dodger All-Star rookie shortstop Corey
Seager went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI last
night as he hit safely for the 29th time in his last 32 games (with an at-
bat) since June 16, batting .364 (51-for-140) with 24 runs, 17 doubles,
two homers and 11 RBI in that span. Overall, Seager ranks among the
NL leaders in runs (66, T-5th), hits (122, 5th), doubles (29, 2nd), batting
average (.307, 12th) and slugging percentage (.523, 13th) in 99 games.
Seager has already stroked the second-most doubles by a Los
Angeles rookie (29), behind only Eric Karros’ 30 doubles in
1992. The franchise rookie record is 52, set by Johnny
Frederick in 148 games in 1929.
Through just 103 team games, with 17 home runs, Seager
trails only Hanley Ramirez by two (19, 2013) for the Los
Angeles single-season home run record by a shortstop.
START ME UP: Scott Kazmir enters tonight’s start unbeaten in his
last 13 outings since May 14, going 7-0 with a 3.73 ERA (30 ER/72.1
IP) during the longest winning streak of his career. During the run, he’s
limited opposing hitters to a .219 batting average (59-for-270) with 81
strikeouts in 72.1 innings.
Kazmir has not lost a start in the month of July since 2010,
going 10-0 with a 1.77 ERA (23 ER/117.0 IP) in 19 starts.
Kazmir will be facing the D-backs for just the second time in
his career after beating Arizona as a member of the Devil
Rays on June 22, 2006, allowing just three hits in 7.2 innings
of one-run ball in a 4-1 victory
MILESTONE WATCH: Adrián González is one home run away
from 300 for his career and would become just the seventh active
player to reach 300 homers and 400 doubles (402 in his career), joining
Alex Rodriguez, Adrian Beltre, Carlos Beltran, Albert Pujols, David
Ortiz and Miguel Cabrera.
Gonzalez is one of only three all-time players with 100 or
more RBI against the D-backs (107), joining Todd Helton
(138) and Matt Kemp (100). His 34 home runs in 163 games
against Arizona rank third, behind only Barry Bonds (39) and
Helton (35).
RETIREMENT PLAN: Dodger pitchers lead the Majors in WHIP
(1.12) and strikeouts (982), while ranking fourth in ERA (3.52) and
second in the big leagues with a .222 opponents’ batting average – on
pace for the lowest mark in franchise history:

1. 2016 .222 (763/3441)
2. 1965 .224

Los Angeles’ bullpen leads the Majors in opponents’ batting
average (.202) and WHIP (1.06), while ranking third in ERA
(3.07, 119 ER/348.1 IP). Individually, the club’s relievers
