It's suggested by the Surviving Sepsis Campaign Guidelines for caring for COVID-19 patients that mechanically ventilated adults with COVID-19 and moderate-to-severe ARDS use prone ventilation for 12-16 hours a day. 1 WHAT IS A MOBILITY COACH? An individual trained in Safe Patient Handling and Mobility techniques who will coach staff and assist with proning, turning, repositioning and transport activities at the bedside and throughout the hospital. IMPORTANT PRECAUTIONS + REMINDERS: We will follow and reinforce your prone positioning policies, protocols and procedures and the AACN procedural guidelines. Mobility Coaches are ready to serve your prone team! Refer to the new NPIAP guidance on preventing pressure injury in proned patients. 3 Also, refer to the tip sheet below. 4 If proning manually, it's recommended to have 4-5 people as part of the turning process. 2 Mobility Coaches serve as members of this team. Utilize Proning Therapy tools like Rotoprone and lifting aids such as lifts, air systems or slide sheets if available to facilitate ease of the turn and promote healthcare worker safety. Mobility Coaches assist on the side of the bed furthest from the ventilator. This position does the most lifting and movement. Average prone position time is 12-16 hours.
