The Arlington Mill Senior Advisory Committee, in conjunction with participants from the Social 60+ Cafe and other dedicated volunteers, are hard at work developing a new community gar-den space at the Community Center. The plan is to develop a container garden to beautify the otherwise concrete courtyard space on the Plaza Level of Arlington Mill Community Center. The committee is looking for interested individuals to assist with the development and/or maintenance of the garden. If you are interested, please call the main center line at 703-228-7369 to get involved!
Love movies? Arlington Mill is looking for a dedicated volunteer to assist with its vibrant Movies & Critics program. Volunteers would assist in choosing movies, leading critical discussions, and writing a review to submit to this publication. If interested, please call Nick at 703-228-7369.
There are so many great places to walk around Arlington Mill Senior Center, join a group of like-minded seniors to explore the great areas. Arlington Mill is adding a new walking group known as the ‘Arlington Mill Trekkers’ The group will meet every Thurs-day at 9am in the Arlington Mill Plaza, then walk from there to various locations in and around the neighborhood. For more in-formation please call ahead: 703-228-7369.

Movies and CriticsThursday, Sept. 20, 1-3:30pm
Ever wanted to be a movie critic? Now you can. Arlington Mill is now offering Movies & Critics, an interactive movie experience. Come just to enjoy the movie, or take notes during the film for a critical discussion afterwards.
Barbara Smith, the leader for the Tuesday morning Spanish class, “Easy Intermediate Spanish” started off as just another student. But two years ago, when the class came to a crossroads after learning that the past teacher could no longer contin-ue, Barbara stepped up to the chal-lenge.
She began by considering her posi-tion temporary, and relied on oth-er native Spanish volunteers who assisted with the fine details of the language. Over the years, she has adapted the class in to a fully struc-tured group that keeps on coming. Many of the students have been at-tending for years, while others are new comers with limited knowledge of Spanish. “I consider myself the leader, not the teacher.” Barbara says, since she is not a native speaker. “The class is actually more of a study
group, that is, a group of people who love Spanish and want to continue their studies. Anyone with a similar interest is welcome.” The class aver-ages ten to fifteen members weekly, and uses creative resources such as online videos, websites, and good old-fashioned text books.
“We have a lot of fun, and I look forward to
the class each week.”
Barbara’s background is in teaching, having taught high school history and medical terminology to adults. Her most recent employment has been in sales administration where she could practice her love for organizing and developing business procedures. In addition to studying Spanish, Barba-ra is an avid traveler in her free time. She travels to England and Spain
as much as possible, and has a trip planned to Italy next Spring. Barbara says Spain in particular, is one of her favorites. No doubt that it couples her joy of the Spanish language.
No matter what capacity, we are very thankful for all of our volun-teers here at Arlington Mill, be-cause without leaders like Barba-ra, we would not be able to offer such quality programs as these.
If your interested in joining Easy In-termediate Spanish, please call the main center line. The class meets year round, and while there is a wide variety of skill levels, you are encour-aged to already have a beginner level of understanding of the language.
We also offer Spanish Conversation on Mondays at noon, Intermediate level knowledge is recommended.
Are you interested in becoming a volunteer? There are many oppor-tunities available here at Arlington Mill. Whether you are interested in leading a program, or would just like to roll up your sleeves and help out, please be sure to contact Nick En-glund, Center Director to express your interest.
We are now taking submissions for stories and articles for “The Mill” Se-nior Newsletter. Stories can include happenings in Arlington County, Parks and Recreation, Senior Pro-grams, and activities at Arlington Mill. If you would like to be given a specific story, we are happy to share ideas. For more information, please call (703) 228-7369.
