I hope everyone is having a ‘swell’ last week of school before winter vacation! We’ve been having a good time with our winter songs and have added some rhythm instruments (as accompaniment) this week. I have truly enjoyed observing the students as they learned the German and Spanish pronunciations for two of our songs (“O Tannenbaum” and “Feliz Navidad”). It is interesting to see how different classes respond to the challenge of taking on a new language (in song). Even though there were vast differences in their approach, all of the classes have risen to the occasion and done an excellent job. When we sing “O Tannenbaum”, I

like to tell the students that I can imagine there is a music class somewhere in Germany singing this same song and the students are working hard to learn the

English just as we working hard to learn the German. I love the image of making cultural connections through song.

Everyone has really been absorbed in story time at the end of music classes (when time allows). We have heard “Frosty the Snowman”, “The Twelve Days of Christmas”, “The Twelve Dogs of Christmas” (thank you Katie Anton!), “A Very Special Snowflake”, and “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bell”. Students always seem fond of being read to… and that’s great!

Our next singing performances will be on Thursday, January 14, 2010. Kindergartners will sing for Student of the Month during the school day, and

again for Recruitment Information Night that same evening (information to follow). The two classes selected to perform are Mrs. Anderson’s class (room 102) and Ms. Borth’s class (room 105). They were chosen because Mrs. Anderson’s class had music 2 times per week the first quarter, and Ms. Borth’s class has music 2 times this quarter, so they have had more preparation time. They will be singing “Sing A Rainbow” and “Rubber Duckie”. Mrs. Demeter’s class (room 101) and Mrs. Campbell’s class (room 107) have been chosen to perform twice in May (for Student of the Month and Kindergarten Round-Up), when they will have (or have had) music 2 times per week - later in the schedule.

Here’s wishing everyone a safe and VERY HAPPY winter break. Like I say to the students – “See you next year!”

Green News

The Green Team applied for a $1000 Youth

Garden Grant offered by the National Gardening Association/Home Depot.  The plan is to transform the courtyard prairie into an outdoor learning environment, complete with raised vegetable beds, rain, native, and prairie gardens, an arbor, a fountain, compost pile, and outdoor seating.  The children will do the majority of the plantings this spring and next fall.  If we are not chosen to receive the grant, the Green Team's hope is to move in this direction with the courtyard, perhaps at a slower pace as we continue to secure funding for the project.  The children's garden work time will be during some science classes and will include horticultural curriculum. Many thanks to those who worked on the Youth Garden Grant.  Project Development and Design - Marvin Boucher, Sarah Linnes-Robinson, Julie FlaskampGarden Map - Kari Demars, Brian and Layla OsweilerPhotographs - Tammy WalkerWriting and Editing - Laurie Davis

your unending devotion to ensuring a bright and exhilarating future for your children.2010 is just around the corner. With a new calendar year comes the opportunity to reflect on the past, imagine new hopes & dreams, and commit to resolutions that are the building blocks for a better tomorrow. Let there be peace on earth and the creation of human capacity so that all of us can work, live and play together in harmony. Have a magical holiday filled with laughter, love and memories.

Did you know “Lego” is in armataGE schoOL?!

The Orange Frogs and Viva Las Legos are gearing up for the Lego Robotics Competition on January 16, but don’t feel left out if you aren’t part of the fun. After school Lego Robotics classes will be held at Armatage and will be open to all 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders beginning sometime after the tournament. Learn how the robots work, challenge yourself on the Smart Course track, and begin building your programming skills for next year’s team!

Little kids feeling left in the dust? No way! Armatage is one of nine MPS schools selected to pilot a Junior Lego Robotics program which will begin in February. Open to K-2nd graders, the younger crowd will get their chance to program and compete too! We hear rumors that we may have enough equipment for up to 8 teams of juniors, but none of these teams can form without parent support. Contact Sarah Linnes-Robinson, parent volunteer, at [email protected] or 612-791-7081 to offer your time to coach a team; coach training is provided. We will open registration for the kids after we have our volunteer coaches in line so we know how many kids we can accept into the program.

Scholastic Book Fair A Success

The first Fall Scholastic book fair was a success!  The kids seemed to enjoy receiving $2 to buy a book.  Thank you to everyone who volunteered at the book fair and to all that attended it.  We collected $438 for the One for Books charity program and we earned $4,286 in Scholastic dollars.  We hope to buy lots of new books for the Media Center and teachers at Armatage with this money.  The next book fair will be Feb. 17 - 22, 2010, and we will be open before school and after to accommodate those eager to buy books.  If you are interested in participating, please contact Jill DeSanto at [email protected].

The Ground isn’t too frozen YET—Plant your Armatage Yard Sign while you still can!

Armatage Montessori yard signs are now available! Come pick one up from the office, or send in payment with your child and we will send one home with them. You can also buy one straight from Jill on Friday morning Dec. 18 when you come to celebrate with your child during their classroom holiday party!

Signs cost $10 -- donations are also being accepted for families that cannot afford to support this marketing project. If everyone on your street already has their Armatage sign, you can also gift one to a friend in another neighborhood—the point is to spread the word about our great school!

To place an order for a sign send a check made out to ‘Armatage School’ with your child. Please include “Yard Signs”, and your child’s name and classroom on the memo line. Any amount over $10 we will consider a donation to those that cannot pay. If you have any questions please contact Jill DeSanto at [email protected] or 612-825-0967.

Attention ParentsChange to Lost and Found Procedure The items will be removed from the Lost and Found bench the last day of every month.  They then will be placed in a plastic bin in the PTA room for an additional month.  At the end of that month they will be donated to charity.  It gives some time to recover those items that are lost the last few days of the month.  All items that were removed from the Lost and Found bench at the end of November are presently in the PTA room.

Young Dance Project with Deaf and Hard of

Hearing Students

Young Dance invites students in grades 2-12 to participate in a project directed by actor Nic Zapko. Participants will meet weekly - January through April - for rehearsals, and will perform in the Young Dance Spring Performance, May 20-22, 2010.

Young Dance is a youth modern dance company whose mission is to transform lives through learning. We look forward to opening our doors to students who are deaf or hard of hearing. For more information contact Gretchen at 612-423-3064 or go to www.youngdance.org

Room 112 makes blankets for the needy

The first and second year students in room 112 have been working hard this year, making fleece blankets for those in need.

Blankets have been, and will be donated to Blankets of Hope, families in need here at Armatage and the Crisis Nursery.

Making the blankets is a wonderful way for the students to use their practical life skills and to realize how they can help people in need.

Donations for TroopsStationed in Basra, Iraq

Ms. O'Donnell's (2nd grade teacher in Room 106)  28 year old niece is stationed in Basra, Iraq.

Last year, so many families kindly dropped off small gifts/candies/ stationery, pens, etc. to be sent to both her nephews who were stationed there.

They have since returned, but Ms. O'Donnell would like to continue the tradition and once again send boxes to our troops.  Julianne (her niece) says that there are many Minnesota National Guardsmen and women with her in Basra.

Please drop off donations in room 106 and they will get sent with cards and warm wishes from all of us."

STUDENT OF THE MONTH NOVEMBER

Don’t Forget! - ¡Hablemos Espanol! After-School Spanish Registration Deadline is December 31, 2009

The registration deadline for the University Language Program’s after-school Spanish classes is quickly approaching.  Registration is due by December 31, 2009 and can be easily done online at www.ulanguage.com in just a few minutes.  If you have any questions about registering for this great program, please call Dery Vinholi, program director, at 612-379-3823.

This program is a great opportunity for Armatage as it has been offered for years at nearly every other nearby elementary school, such as Barton, Burroughs, Dowling, Hale, Kenwood, Lake Harriet, and Seward Montessori with great success.  Classes will begin on Tuesday, January 19.

This initial session will be a pilot program to determine our school’s interest.  We need 30-40 registered students to launch this program and sustain it for next year, so now is the time.  Additional information sheets can be picked up in the school office.

Room 118 Seek Donations for Joyce Food Shelf

The 4th and 5th grade students in Christian Houdek’s room are celebrating the

holidays while helping others to do the same.

Thankful for the treats and party they know they will have at the end of the

week, they are collecting donations of food and/or money for Joyce Food Shelf

because some people don’t know when their next party will happen.

Feel free to bring additional donations to room 118 on Friday, December 18, even

if it is simply the unopened treats from building gingerbread houses. Every little bit is

appreciated.

Sincerely,

Room 118

The deadline for School Choice for next year is rapidly approaching. Principal Jackie Hanson and the staff and students of Anthony Middle

School invite prospective students and their families to visit their school.

The only middle school in Minneapolis to make

AYP in 2009, Anthony Middle School offers its 600 students a rigorous academic program with a variety of electives, including Spanish,

French, Gateway to Technology, band, choir, art, PE/Health and AVID. Partnerships with area artists through the Arts for Academic

Achievement program and with The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History enhance the learning opportunities offered to our students.

Anthony has begun the intensive authorization process to become an IB World School offering the IB Middle Years Program (MYP). The MYP

program in grades 6 through 8 guides students in developing intellectual discipline, strategies and skills that result in critical thinking and prepares them for success in high school.

Along with the many tours that we are offering, we will have an Information Evening

on January 14th at 6:00 p.m. in our auditorium.

For more information about Anthony Middle

School and to find our scheduled tour dates, visit our website at anthony.mpls.k12.mn.us. 6t

PTA Meeting

Tuesday,

December 8,

2009 Pa r e n t Tea c h e r A s s o c i a t i o n

Welcome and

introductions –

Mary McKelvey,

President

Mary has created a parent resource table, which will be out at all meetings. The table contains information that is mailed to PTA president. There will also be DPAC information on the table. Nan Carlson is our DPAC representative and Julie Millikan is on the DPAC Steering Committee.Bob Monson will head up the Principal’s Update today as Principal Franks is at home recuperating from surgery.

Principal’s

Update - Bob

Monson

Joan called me a couple weeks ago, telling me she was having surgery on her foot and asked if I could help out. My wife used to work here and my daughter works with the kindergartners. I am not an expert at Armatage, but I know it is a wonderful school, with fantastic staff. I call Joan all the time and tell her how wonderful Armatage is and that she can stay home longer if she would like.My first day was the first day of “Kids on Broadway”. I saw it all four times. The experience was wonderful. The children will always remember performing.Did I mention that Armatage is a wonderful school?

Elections for

Secretary and

Vice President -

Shari Anderson

Our bylaws state we will need to hold our elections today. Nan Carlson and I were the nominating committee and we have someone interested in each position: SuAnn DeGeorgeo for Vice President and Kristen Milner for Secretary. Ladies, do you accept the nominations? Both do. Ballots were handed out to all PTA members attending the meeting and a vote took place. Shari Anderson counted the votes and SuAnn DeGeorgeo is our new Vice President and Kristen Milner is our new Secretary. Congratulations Ladies!

Budget Update

- Jamie

Henriksen

Since our last meeting, I have written checks out to all teachers and specialists and tutors. Teachers spend $1500 to $1800 of their own money each year on average. The PTA received thank you cards from the teachers ~ this really means a lot to the PTA. The Whirly has been purchased, but has not yet been installed in the Peaceful Playground.Everything we budgeted for the Fun Walk money has been paid out already.Book fair proceeds need to be determined. Book coupons, cash register for future book fairs. Teachers have put in wish lists and the Media Specialist would like to update the media center with new authors and also get full collections from authors. A lot of our Media Center collection is paperbacks and they need to be replaced soon. The reference area is out of date. Our encyclopedias are old.We need to gather Teacher Wish Lists for what we will use the Scholastic dollars for, so Jill DeSanto will be a contact person to get teacher’s classroom wish lists.

Kids on Broadway Update -Jamie Henriksen

Kids on Broadway broke even with DVD sales and refreshments. Broadway had 77 performers. On average we had 18 parents volunteering each day. Julie Railsback did a fabulous job as director! Julie has done it seven of the last ten years and she is not sure she wants to do it next year. Pam Sievert will not be here next year to play the piano either, so we have a lot to discuss as to how to run Broadway next year.

Volunteer Update - Shari Anderson

It is volunteer form time again. These will be coming home in your Wednesday folder on December 10. There are some events in January and February that we need to get volunteers for soon! Please remember that just because you turn in your form and have signed up for a March/April event, you will probably not hear from the volunteer coordinator until a couple weeks prior to your event.

Volunteer Update - Shari Anderson

Some current volunteer needs: • parent advisors for Student Council which ramps up in January. • We need volunteer shadows for our Family Reading Night this year to work with our

co-chairs who will be stepping down. The shadows would then chair this event next year.

• Science Fair • Information Night in January • Yearbook chairs would like to coordinate photographers to take pictures at room

parties, etc.Jill DeSanto will be chairing the Book fair next year. Jill indicated that during the week was very busy. We were open on Sunday this year (there are two City Church services) and we did pretty good on Sunday, although the fire alarm got pulled and I think people who would have shopped, never came back into the book fair.

New Business A parent is researching credit cards that payback to the community and would benefit Armatage, similar to the Target Red Card.Christian Houdek’s room (118) is doing a food drive for Joyce Food shelf. If you would like to donate unopened items leftover from Gingerbread houses, the drive wraps up on Friday, December 18th.PTA Meeting Schedule. It has been proposed that we phase out the afternoon meetings and hold all meetings in the evenings. It is important to hold election and voting meetings in the evenings. Evening meetings do conflict with school board meetings though. Teachers are fine with all evening meetings. Shari Anderson motions to hold all PTA meetings in the evenings. It was seconded and all approved. Motion to discuss day of week PTA meetings are held to be discussed in January.Mary thanked Bill Gibbs, Kenny Principal, for sitting in on our PTA meeting.Meeting Adjourned!

Changing School Options Transition Update The K-8 School Choice Center will be available December 16th. Families can go to http://www.mpls.k12.mn.us/ and click on the Choice Center to register their student. This is a new online process for K-8 families and is similar to the system that High School students currently use. School Choice Cards will also be available at your schools and can be picked up at the School Information Fair Orientation Trainings, Conference Room 2 at Student Placement Services, 1250 W. Also, other ideas or suggestions are always welcomed. Feel free to contact Nikki Lindberg [email protected], 612-929-2188/home, 612-207-8489/ cell, with any questions, ideas, etc.
