Located at downtown Yerevan, The Northern Avenue is mainly home to luxurious residential buildings, elite brand shops, commercial offices, coffee shops, hotels, restaurants and night clubs. Although it was planned by the main architect of Yerevan Alexander Tamanian in 1924, the actual plan was never implemented during the Soviet period.

The construction of the avenue started on 26 March 2002, based on the original plan of Alexander Tamanian which was developed and redesigned by architect Jim Torosyan. Based on its revised design, the Northern Avenue is home to 4 small squares and 11 buildings with an average height of 9 floors. Many types of stones were used in the construction including basalt, granite, travertine and tufa. The avenue has a 2-story underground parking area. It was entirely renovated in 2014

The Yerevan region had been under the control of various Muslim rulers since the incursions of Timur in the 14th century. From the second third of the 18th century, it had been a province of Iran (ruled successively by Nadir Shah, Karim Khan Zand and the Iranian Qajar Dynasty), before it fell to the Russian empire in 1827

After the independence of Armenia, with the support from Iranian government, the premises again started acting as a Mosque
