GAME OVERVIEW Whether playing the Campaign, Battle or Multi-player game, your ability to lead your squad will make the differencebetween success and failure.

Selecting Your Troops• Press F1 to select Squad 1. Individual members of Squad 1 now appear in the SELECTED UNITS display area

just above the Map display. The selection leader is always in slot one.• Left-click on an individual unit in the game screen. You’ll notice that the unit now occupies a slot on the SELECTED

UNITS display. If you’re in a hurry, you may also Ctrl-click and drag a selection window around an individualunit in the game screen.

• Left-clicking on a unit’s button in the SELECTED UNITS display automatically selects the unit if he is not already selected.• Pressing the F1 key twice in rapid succession centers the game screen on Squad 1.

Moving the MenOnce the soldiers are selected you may begin moving them around the playing surface. All you need to do is point and right-clickat a spot within the game screen. If you right-click and hold the mouse button, the selected units will follow the cursor asyou move the mouse, and the selection leader will be under direct control.

You may also move them by right-clicking at a location on the Strategic Map. (The Strategic Map is located in the upper portionof the Control Panel to the right of the game screen.) This lets you move them to areas of the playing surface that lieoutside your current view.

Remember that only selected units will obey any movement or combat instructions you give them. You can exert evengreater tactical control over the soldiers by combining their movement with more complex maneuvers such as rolling, diving, kneeling, or laying prone. Pressing the corresponding shortcut key on the keyboard performs each of these maneuvers. Usingthese keys will also put the selection leader under direct control.

A complete list of keyboard shortcuts may be found on the Controls screen.

Firing at Enemy UnitsIt is easy to make any selected unit fire his weapon, but hitting targets is primarily up to you. With a unit selected, left-clickinganywhere on the game screen causes him to fire his selected weapon. Placing the cursor over an enemy and clicking notonly makes a unit fire his weapon, but any units also selected will fire their weapons at the target as well. (Pressing theSpacebar can also be used to fire a unit’s weapon).

Page 8: Army Men - World War - Manual - PC

7

Automatic weapons fire when the left mouse button is pressed. Non-automatic weapons fire on the release of the left mousebutton. This lets you hold the left mouse button down while aiming and then let go when you are ready to fire. Right-clickwhile aiming to cancel the firing of the weapon. Remember, if you click to fire a weapon or use a space bar, the selectionleader will be under direct control.

Direct vs. Indirect ControlWhen a unit is first selected, it is under indirect control and its dashboard icon is olive green. In this control mode, the unitwill behave according to the Command Mode it is set on. If, after being selected, the right mouse button is held down, thekeyboard is used to move or a fire button is pressed, the unit will be under direct control and it’s dashboard icon will turnbright green. The unit will then no longer behave according to its Command Mode and will wait for user input. If you areunsure which control mode you are in, deselect all units by clicking on an empty dashboard slot, and your first selectionthereafter will put the selected unit under indirect control.

Gathering Power-upsThe units start most games with a rifle and some grenades. Fortunately, they are able to gather additional weapons andequipment by uncovering various power-ups. Power-ups are useful items packed in crates that are scattered about the map. They fall into three categories: Weapons, Equipment, and Air Support. Power-ups are obtained by having a unit pick themup by moving over them. Other than his rifle and grenades, a unit can only carry one other power-up in his inventory. Onecan, however, have a unit drop something he is carrying in favor of picking up something else.

To drop an item, first make sure the item is selected (remember, the rifle and grenade cannot be dropped). Next, pressthe "Drop Weapon" button (Default is "`" [tilde] but this can be user configured in the Control options).

Changing a Unit’s Current Power-upTo change a unit's current power-up, first make sure the unit is a SELECTED UNIT. Next, right-click on a weapon icon in theControl panel of the SELECTED UNIT's inventory. You may also use the Tab key to change the selection leader’s weapon.

There are some power-ups like mines, explosives, and air support which can only be used by a directly controlled unit.A unit under direct control, when deselected will always default his weapon selection to the rifle. This will prevent undesireduse of those weapons.

Using Power-upsTo use a power-up, first make sure the power-up you desire is selected by following the steps in CHANGING A UNIT'SPOWER-UP. Most power-ups and weapons can be fired simply by left-clicking on the main viewing area. Some weapons, like the Medpack and Wrench, can be fired from the control panel by first selecting the power-up, then right-clicking on thepower-up icon a second time.

The SQUADS DisplayDirectly underneath the SELECTED UNITS portion of the Control Panel arethe SQUADS. The SQUADS display lets you see all of your squads at aglance. The squad number is indicated in the upper left of each squad slot. The squad leader’s current weapon icon is displayed in the center of thesquad slot. Not only do you learn the soldier’sname, you also get to see his current health and an individual camera on him until you select another unit.

Vehicles Vehicles do not move on their own - you must first place someone inside them. In addition to your Green Armyvehicles, empty enemy vehicles may also be entered and controlled. To move a soldier (or group of soldiers) into a vehicle,

When a squad or group of soldiers is selected, eachmember of the squad or group is displayed in an individual slot. A maximum of 9selected units can be shown at any given time. When the meter is empty, the vehicle explodes, but remember, thewrench power-up can be used to fix a damaged vehicle. Soldiers inside an exploding Covered Truck or Halftrack willautomatically exit safely. Soldiers inside vehicles other than a Covered Truck or Halftrack are eliminated if the vehicle isdestroyed when they are inside.

Health Each soldier, vehicle and military structure in the game is assigned a number of hit points (HPs) that representits health. Hit points are a reflection of the amount of damage that something can absorb before being eliminated. A unitthat runs out of hit points is eliminated. Certain power-ups, like the Med Kit, can restore lost hit points.

You can keep track of a soldier, vehicle or structure’s health by looking at its health meter, a horizontal bar underneath the unitthat starts out colored green but changes to yellow and then to red as the unit suffers damage.

The default is on.• Casualties Replaced: Eliminated units (soldiers and vehicles) other than Sarge automatically re-spawn after a brief delay and

appear in their initial starting positions. The delay time is configurable and is specified at the bottom of the screen.• Power-ups Replenished: Power-ups reappear in their same location after a brief delay. If the Random Power-ups option

is turned Off, reappearing power-ups are the same as the ones they replace. The delay is configurable and is specified at the bottom of the screen.

• Random Power-ups: When this option is activated, power-ups are randomly chosen from the pool of active power-ups.For example, if you want to play with random power-ups, but don’t want to include Air Strikes you would toggle RandomPower-up option On and the Air Strike option Off.
