I then worked in an HPC service company as development director, and the company was bought by OVH.

I am now working in Inria in the transfer and valorisation service in Nancy.

My hypothesis : you are all very smart !!!! Much smarter than I am !

You are tired, your attention and your brain are somewhere in the room, but not between your 2 hears !

So let’s try to say something interesting AND fun. Remember, I have (really) organised clown spectacles.

Looks good, Stephane Dalmas of Inria looks very worried, I see some sweat drops going down his face, very good sign. Is there a doctor in the room ? Oh, I forgot, you can win something during the presentation AND I NEED YOUR HELP (we will see that at the end).

I buy a Renault car, I have one more car, and Renault one less.

I go and watch a movie, I bought the movie, but the movie maker still has the movie.

When I get a software, the creator still has it. No difference with movies.

Movies and software are immaterial good.

The difference between software and movies : when I get a movie, it is finished. With software, when I get a software, it is obsolete. A software is continuouslyevolving (bugs and functions).

The non finished aspect of software is a HUGE argument for open source business models : it is compatible.

5

Then software editors need recurring revenues as there costs are recurring.

I took the drawing from an European Commission document, oh, maybe not afterall.

Open source / Earning money are totally decoralated things.

You may earn money with or without open source.

You may also not earn (enough money) without or with open source.

So we have 2 different dimensions (perpendiculary dimensions / unrelated).

Beware revenue sources and intellectual property are very linked :

• GPL => forget proprietary modules, so no paying extensions

• Patent revenues => forget GPL (even for other software)

• Dual licensing => impose copyright transfer for contribution. Contribution # 1/10000 downloads (more for infra/pro soft.) => kill contribution. I prefer othermodels (including copyright protection, hardware, Saas, …).

The local « state » administration in France, is done at the departement level. The prefectures are delivering a bunch of legal papers. For example, when yousell your car to somebody, you must have a « certificat de non gage » showingthat you own your car and have not engaged it. Prefectures are delivering thispaper.

Linbox FAS had relationship with the local prefecture. So they had « bornes » (self-service kiosk) very expensive and using special thermal printer paper. Theywanted one with « a normal computer and a normal printer » and using internet. Can you do that ? And, oh, it is directly on the network, so it must totally securefrom a software point of view.
