For one month the centre of Arnhem is literally the core of the third edition of the Arnhem Mode Biënnale, the greatest cultural fashion event in the world. This year’s central theme is SHAPE. Over 150 garments show what SHAPE signifies and why ‘form’ is topical in fashion now.

Together with curator Piet Paris, FLATarchitects designed the main exhibition setup of the biennial. The developed concept contains a five meter high exhibition route, straight through Arnhem’s city centre. FLAT is also responsible for the design of the 32 exhibi-tion pavilions. The pavilions stand on the elevated route, on the ground, and inside the Eusebius church.

The 200 meter route runs from the inside square of Arnhem’s city hall to the church. Along the way visitors meet with the recent work of famous fashion designers, such as Comme des Garçons, Lanvin and Viktor & Rolf. Inside the Eusebius church a small fashion village has commenced contain-ing work especially made for this exhibition by young designers like Cosmic Wonder, Klavers van Engelen and Iris van Herpen. There is also a runway in the church at which many fashion shows will be held, among which the SHAPE and ArtEZ shows.

FLATarchitects designed two types of pavilions for the exhibition. The large pa-vilion for the main designers, measuring 35 m2, is called Bugh. The small pavilion for the younger talents is called 21panels and has a 6,5 m2 floorspace. According to the curator’s wishes both pavilions are fully reusable. One of our main intends was to make the construction comprehensible at first sight. Thereby Bugh is connectable in the longitudinal direction and therefore ‘infinitely’ extendable.

The 16 Bughs were especially designed for the Mode Biënnale. The proportions were derived from the default measurements of the used scaffolding system to construct the exhibition route. The wooden parts of the main construction were cnc-cut out of 18 mm thick plywood. The different parts are to be assembled simply by sliding them into one another. We tried to limit the amount of different construction parts, for the building-up to be as easy as possible. Positioned on the five meter high scaffold-ing, in a windy part of town, constructive demands for the pavilions were very high. Nevertheless, except for some straps that provide stability, constructional additives are redundant.Over the wooden frame tent cloth is folded as a cover. The cloth is fixed onto the plywood frame, simply by hammering a 20 mm thick rope from the outside into a 18 mm slot. The entrance side of the pavilion is cladded with 9 mm plywood and closed by a sliding door.

The inner lining of the Bugh pavilion is flexible as to meet the designers’ wishes about their plans for the interior. Some pavilions have closed ceil-ings as well as closed walls. The frames are still visible though, an 18 mm plywood line shows in floor, walls and ceilings. Others only have closed walls or no inner lining at all. Here the daylight enters generously, filtered through the yellow or white tent cloth.

takes two men about half an hour to assemble the pavilion. Again, there are no screws or nails required.More information on 21panels: www.flatarchitects.nl/Alp_21panels_EN.pdf

For the department store De Bijenkorf FLATarchitects designed a pop-up store, that is in shape related tot the biënnale pavilions. Pop-ub, as the design is called, basically is a stripped and scaled version of Bugh. In three Pop-ubs through the Arnhem Bijenkorf work of young dutch fashion designers like Bas Kosters, ...and Beyond, and Daryl van Wouw is displayed and sold.

The Arnhem Mode Biënnale is open to the pub-lic from June 6th till July 6th in the city centre of Arnhem, the Netherlands.www.arnhemmodebiennale2009.com

Bugh’s little brother is 21panels. This concept was created earlier for an art installation in Utre-cht in 2008. The design was slightly modified for the biennial. All parts of this pavilion can be cut out of 21 standard plywood panels (1220 x 2440 mm), reducing the rest material to a minimum. It
