The last week of term has arrived and I think we are all well and truly ready of a break. We have much to celebrate here this term. Our data is showing significant gains and growth for many of our students in many areas. This is due to the precise and consistent work of our staff, their professional, diligent work is helping to enhance student learning. Did you see in the Courier Mail that St Rita’s is one of the top 100 schools in Qld for most improvement in NAPLAN? Disco I extend a huge ‘Thank you’ to all the staff and parents who helped at the disco on Friday night, a special thank you to Maria and Fiona for their organization and coordination of the event. We had many volunteers helping out, from setting up, serving and supervising to cleaning up after the disco finished. It was a fun night for our students and we were pleased to be able to hold this for them. Staff Thank you to Ms Tahlia Nicol for her amazing work in 2K these past two terms, Mrs Cerryn Henry returns to 2K for Term 4. Ms Lisa-Marie Louange will be on leave for Term 4 as she prepares for her wedding. Ms Tahlia Nicol will replace Lisa-Marie in 4K. Mr Brian Mason will return in Term 4. Thank you to Mrs Therese Rae for taking on the Acting APRE role and to Nathan for replacing Brian as Acting APA. I appreciate the support that both Therese and Nathan have given to me in their roles these past few weeks. Melbourne, Ballarat and Canberra Trip A group of us will gather at the airport bright and early on Sat morning to accompany our Year 5 and 6 students for their trip to Melbourne, Ballarat and Canberra. There is a lot of organization behind the scenes for this trip to occur, thank you Mrs Virginia Hay for being our ‘Travel Agent and Tour Guide’. Thank you to Mrs Virginia Hay, Mrs Wendy Anderson, Mrs Jade Krieger, Mrs Marianne Ferguson and Ms Nikki Ogden for giving up a week of their holidays to take our students on this interstate excursion. I am sure we will travel safely and enjoy every minute of our time away. Update from Fundraising Committee Meeting Last week our Fundraising Committee met to discuss our major fundraising event for 2019. It has been decided to hold a Colour Explosion and Community Market Night in place of our fete. A Colour Explosion is like a fun run where children get covered in many colours as they run. This will be held on September 13 2019, the second last Friday of Term 3, more information will be sent out from Term 1 next year. Update from Uniform Committee Meeting Coupled with a uniform review conducted by a sub group of the SPN, our Uniform Committee, provided some recommendations on changes to our current uniforms. • supplier and are working on sending out a survey letter to all parents this week. Proposal ONE: Dress currently worn for the first time by our Year 3 students be changed to a two-piece uniform made up of a blouse and skorts. The dress style has provided some difficulties for our upper primary students. Proposal TWO: One uniform for all students From Prep through to Year 6, so that there is no change from Year 2 to Year 3, with the exception of the formal girls' uniform of the two piece to replace the dress. Proposal THREE: Sporting House teams to be reduced from five to four, with the white team being the one to be removed. As noted already, we are working on a letter to go home to each family for feedback on the suggestions. This will be emailed out to all families soon. Proposed Sports Team Names While changing the number of house teams, we would like to name our house teams so that they reflect our local charism and identity. The current floral names can be kept as a floral emblem for each team. After some discussion on names or places of significance for St Rita and her links to Augustinian Spirituality, we have some draft suggestions for the name of 4 house teams. After looking into the life of St Rita we are suggesting the following names for the sports teams. Warra Warra (Wattle) – the local Aboriginal name for Victoria Pt, gold house Cascia - (Boronia) – St Rita’s home town, Red house Penola – (Jacaranda) - to acknowledge Mary Mackillop, Blue house Galway – (Coolibah) to honour the first priests of the parish who named St Rita’s after St Rita’s in Galway, Ireland.

Dogs and Other Pets in School Grounds There has been a growing trend regarding people bringing their dogs or other pets into the school grounds when dropping off or picking up students. Due to potential allergy situations, health issues around droppings etc and the possibility of children being bitten or scratched, we ask that pets are not brought into the school grounds, please, even if they are on a leash or being carried. Children are naturally drawn to animals and both the children and the animals can get very excited by the attention. If a child touches or pats a dog in the wrong place or too hard or the pet becomes over-excited or distressed, there is the potential for a scratch or bite injury to occur, even with dogs that appear friendly. We also have students who have allergies to dogs. Parents are advised that we do have a family in the school who are currently training an assistance dog. As we draw Term 3 to a close this week, I wish you all the very best for a happy, safe and relaxing holiday. School resumes on Monday 8 October.
