Pattishall Pre-School Play AreaPattishall Pre-school would like to thank all those who helped to make our dreamof an outdoor play area come true - see front cover photograph!

Our fundraising began with a grant from Councillor Ben Smith through theNorthants County Council Councillors Empowerment Fund; this was generouslyadded to with contributions from Pattishall Parish Council, a charitable businessdonation from Mark and Kate Mitton’s company PWC and an anonymousdonation. We were also very lucky that Johnny Smith of AJ Design and Build putus in touch with his contact at Jewson who donated our paving slabs, and PaulLeeson was able to borrow a digger and other specialist equipment from WhitingLandscapes.

Added to that, our families and staff generously donated their time providing freelabour. This hard work included digging out earth from the steep slope, levellingthe area, installing a retaining wall and laying the paving slabs – we didn’t knowwe were such a skilled bunch!

We would also like to say a special thank you to Iris Illingworth, Chair of PattishallParish Hall committee and Duncan Townsend who have both helped andsupported us along the way in creating our beautiful garden which is nowproviding a fun and secure area for the children to play and learn in.

Pattishall Pre-School is non profit making and run by a voluntary managementcommittee and the creation of this garden would not have been possible withoutthe generosity of all of those involved. We are very busy at the moment so thereare lots of local children benefitting from this space and enjoying the freedom itallows.

If you would like more information about us or you would like your child's nameto be added to our waiting list, then please contact Lauren Leeson - 01327 831413

Patient Participation PanelMuch of interest was gained by many of the people who attended the “Drop-in”event on the 10th May ’11. Thank you to those who came and who made theefforts of the agencies represented and the members of the PatientParticipation Panel (P.P.P.), worthwhile.

The PPP is made up of 10 patient representatives meeting with 2representatives of Practice to consider ways of improving the service

It is essential that the Medical Practice widens it’s involvement with patients ofthe Practice – other than clinical involvement - to create opportunities forpatients to express their views regarding the services provided by the Practiceand complete surveys.

To this end, a “Reference Group” will be set up. Any patient of the GreensNorton ( and Weedon ) Medical Practice may join the Reference Group, soplease feel free to nominate yourself .

Pattishall Good Neighbours ClubTime The time rolls on so quickly I find myself amazed that a report for AroundPattishall is again due.

I was right in respect of the Singing with Natasha, she did get us all joining in.Our Bring & Buy was another success, again there were more articles thansales but our excellent auctioneers (Rose & Steve) got us to buy nearly all theleft over articles. The few remaining were given to charity shops. The onlycriticism I heard was that there were not enough cakes for sale, perhaps weshall have to plead very nicely to our members to make more in future.

Our next outing, June 9th, is to Sandringham so we will keep our fingers crossedfor a nice day.

We had a very nice visit in May to Joyce’s son’s market garden in Olney. Itrained in the morning but cleared up for us to go round and marvel at the varietyof plants and trees he had there. Afterwards we enjoyed a cup of tea in Olneybefore returning home.

July we shall be in the Hall again with Victoria Davis “History of Fashion” will beher subject. August 11th will find us journeying to Trentham Gardens , we willkeep our fingers crossed again for another fine day.

Cold Higham Parish CouncilSix nominations were received for the recent parish council elections and, asthere are seven positions to fill, there was no need for a vote. The six nominees, all previous council members, were therefore elected: Judy Coates, RichardDickens, Jane Kimble, Maggie Merris, Ken Tomkinson, Keith Wootton. Aftermany years of service on the parish council Ruth Dunkley decided not to put hername forward for the recent election. The parish council would like to thankRuth for all her hard work and offer its best wishes for the future.

This means that there is currently a vacancy to be filled. The parish council iseager to find a willing volunteer, perhaps from part of the parish that is currentlyunder represented. Anyone interested should in the first instance contact parishcouncil clerk Pauline Pearson on 01327 830287 for an informal discussion. It isimportant that the parish council has a full complement of members and, in thelonger term, that elections are held as part of the democratic process.

The parish council has received notification that the mobile library service willshortly cease to visit Cold Higham and Grimscote as a result of localgovernment cutbacks. It is a shame that this service will no longer be availableto local residents.

The issue of dog fouling around the parish and in particular in the churchyardand cemetery has arisen once again. More examples have been found despitenumerous notes about this is previous editions of Around Pattishall and posterson the various notice boards and at the entrances to the spaces concerned.Dog fouling in these areas is simply unacceptable. There is no need for dogs tofoul there and it causes much distress to residents and especially those with afamily member or loved one buried in the cemetery. Sadly if this problemcontinues the parish council will have no alternative but to ban dogs from thechurchyard and cemetery and take even more steps if necessary

Climate Friendly Communities AwardOn behalf of the Parish Plan Committee we spent time with the children atPattishall School extolling the virtues of self-sufficiency, saving energy and theenvironment. As a result the children encouraged their parents to haveAllotments. They also took home equipment to monitor electrical usage andrealised how much money they could save by switching lights off. We explainedthe virtues of planting trees and improving the entrance to the village off FostersBooth Road to improve the environment.

All these activities enabled us to register in The Climate Friendly CommunitiesCompetition. The results have just been announced at the NorthamptonshireHome Energy Efficient Partnership (NHEEP) and we achieved the runners-upprize of £500. The prize is to be spent on climate friendly community activities.

Parish PlanIn a mysterious way the Parish Plan continues to influence and complete issuesthat members of the community expressed as concerning them or requiringimprovement. There were 3 outstanding items upon completion of the ParishPlan, refurbishing the Parish Hall, installing a permanent means of controllingspeeding traffic and environmental items.

The Parish Hall continues with its gradual up-grade, the introduction of anelectronically controlled speed warning system is taking longer than plannedowing to the withdrawal of County Council funds, but by some means we will tryto raise the necessary funds to install equipment and hopefully avoid that fatalitythat we all dread. Ingredients of the final item include the improvement of thetwo entrances to the Parish off the A5, one to Astcote the other into FostersBooth Road, and of course a Pocket Park.

I am very pleased to announce that towards the end of last year we applied fora BITESIZE grant from Northamptonshire ACRE and were awarded £440.00this together with the generous donations of 4 inhabitants in the vacinity gaveus £480.00 to spend on improving the road verge into Fosters Booth Road. Amonth ago work to clear the old and dead plants/trees was completed, thereafter the area to be planted was cleared chemically of weeds and compostspread throughout. 90 plants have been planted and I am grateful to thosevolunteers who helped, firstly clearing the area and then planting and I amfurther grateful to Ray Goviar who is undertaking the watering programme toinsure the plants get a sound start.

I hope all those who drive into Foster Booth Road will enjoy the improvementsas they nurture and grow into maturing colourful plants, it has been done foryour benefit and now I hope you take some responsibility in insuring theirsafe-keeping!

Energy questionsFive events have made me think about the electricity we use in our Parish.

1. I travelled through northern Europe and observed dozens of windmillsacross the flat plains which make up most of the landscape

2. An article in the Independent newspaper at the end of May where thefirst sentence was:

Eurotunnel has unveiled plans to run an electricity link through theChannel Tunnel as part of efforts to bolster UK power supplies

3. I have seen, close-up, three of the nuclear power stations which sit onour coastline

4. The two large coal-powered power stations that dominate the town ofDidcot near Oxford, and the Trent Valley near Nottingham are regularlandmarks on my journies

5. Germany has recently announced that it will close all its nuclear powerstations by 2022

…. And I imagine we are all aware of the problems caused to a nuclear powerstation by the earthquake in Japan.

There’s an old map which describes the hills we live on here as the“Northamptonshire Heights”! It has struck me therefore that it might not be longbefore someone applies for permission to build one or more windmills, and thatI really ought to make up my mind about the electricity we need before thathappens. All the above events have informed my thinking.

These are the questions I am reflecting on:1. How do I want the electricity I use to be generated?2. Where, exactly, do I want it to be generated? As I write, it is a quiet

summer’s evening: punctuated by birdsong, and by the sound ofpassing trains on the west coast mainline. There is the continuoushum from the M1 in the background.

So the third question I ask myself is this:3. If the M1 and railway line were not there, would I object to them being

built?

I have not found easy answers to any of these questions – but I thought it worthsharing them so that, when we meet at some village event, we might have aconversation to help me make up my mind. Just in case I ever need to take aview about windmills somewhere nearby.

What is your experience? And your view, I wonder?

Pattishall Women’s InstituteBack in May we debated our Resolutions, this year they were on theclosure of local libraries and setting up large scale farms. With the

help of our WI advisor we had a lively discussion and were able to make aninformed choice. This will now be taken to the National conference in June.

At the end of May many of our members visited Denman College for a tasterday, which included sessions on willow weaving, silk scarves, Tai Chi, andsilver jewellery.

June’s meeting was ‘Members Evening’ and this year we had a behind thescenes tour of our local Waitrose store in Towcester. We discussed where theproduce comes from and what Waitrose are doing to help farmers andcommunities. The Waitrose Foundation helps communities in South Africa withfarming and educational schemes to name a few. Produce from areassupported by the Waitrose Foundation carry it’s own unique logo. We exploredthe warehouse, which is very small; they have 3 deliveries a day to keep up withdemand. At the end of the tour we were treated to cheese and wine. One thingon the WI’s mind is food labelling and we made some useful suggestions thatwe would like to see.

We shall have a busy month in July, with a Curry Lunch and tabletop sale aswell as having a talk from the Body Shop at our meeting. August will see ustaking our usual summer ramble and in September we will be finding out aboutVictorian and Modern Beading.

Bus Service News UpdateSince the last Around Pattishall a lot has been happening as theNorthamptonshire County Council gathered information across

the County to establish what bus needs are and how they can be met within themuch reduced budget. (£1million instead of £3.1million)

The consultation at Towcester Town Hall on 18th May was very well attendedand gave a very good overview of the plans with plenty of opportunity for viewsand questions to be raised. The meeting then hosted by our Parish Council on23rd May was also well attended (32 people) and I was able to pass on the newsthat it is hoped to provide a 2-hourly service similar to the 87 service previouslyrun. If this is not possible then it has been stressed to the NCC that if we canhave a service to Towcester from there we can travel to Northampton or MiltonKeynes. At the meeting I also reported that they hoped to improve the temporarytimetable we now have. Understandably, they have now said that there is somuch to be done by NCC and the bus companies to get the routes and timetablessorted for September that this will not be possible.

There was a Bus Surgery in the Market Square in Northampton on 4th Junewhich I attended to plug again the needs of Eastcote, Astcote and Pattishall.

Pattishall Parish Council agreed to join Bus Users UK which enables us to havea voice at Northampton Members Meetings with NCC and representatives fromthe bus companies. I went along to a meeting on 11th June and was encouragedby the attention and concern given to rural areas. By 20th June all tenders forthe new proposed routes should be with NCC. There will be a time ofconsultation before the end of July by which time the new network will be on theNCC website. Hopefully a new timetable will be up and running at the beginningof September. However, this will only happen if services can be run within thebudget. Whatever service is provided as many people as possible need to tryand make use of it to ensure its continuation.

Some time in July you should be able to find out about the new network and anynew bus timetables from the NCC website:www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/en/councilservices/transport/pubtrans/pages/buschanges.aspx

If you aren’t able to access the internet Towcester Library will be happy to helpyou. When timetables are available they will be placed in the village noticeboards, where possible in the Parish Council window.

Thanks to all those who have attended the meetings, written and emailed. All wecan do now is hope and pray for the best outcome.

Ann Atkin
