June 6th marks the 75th anniversary of the start of the D-Day Landings and the

Battle of Normandy. Codename Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion was an effort of staggering scale and one of the largest amphibious assaults in history. The D-Day invasion resulted in the Allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany’s control and turned the tide of the Second World War. Anticipation at home Northville, like the rest of the country, waited in somber anticipation for the start of the invasion. The Northville Record’s May 26, 1944 front page detailed the statewide plans for an air raid siren to signal confirmation that the invasion was under way. Michigan Governor Harry Kelly proclaimed the day of the invasion Michigan D-Day and called for every citizen to observe 60 seconds of silent

prayer or meditation following the air raid siren. All activities in factories, stores, businesses, schools, theatres — and even traffic — were to cease for one minute. Churches opened their doors to all. Honoring Northville’s Men and Women at War The same issue of The Record detailed plans for Northville’s Memorial Day celebration, which would occur in the week before the D-Day invasion. Memorial Day 1944 marked the unveiling of the Northville Roll of Honor, a 32 x 12 foot board located on the corner of southwest corner of Main and Center streets. The center highlighted a map of the world with American flags marking the countries or regions where Northville men and women were serving or had served. The sides of the map contained 364 names of those serving or those who had served— listed alphabetically — with space for names to be added. The Mothers The Northville Honor Roll

was presented to the Blue Star Mothers — mothers with sons or daughters in active service. Mrs. George Rattenbury, a Gold Star Mother (mothers who lost a son or daughter in service), and Mrs. Sam Bongiovanni, the mother of four sons and a son-in-law in service, unveiled the honor roll. D-Day Reflections The Northville Record headline on June 9, 1944, summed up invasion day in our community: Northville People Kneel in Prayer • Village Devout Ask for Safety of Dear Ones • Churches are Filled; Import of Invasion of Europe Strikes into Homes of Community. The Detroit Free Press in its coverage of the D-Day invasion noted that sirens sounded at 10 a.m. “The sirens reached out to the river and the crews on freighters, passing Detroit, came up on deck and stood with hats off and heads bowed. Switch engines stopped, too.” Michigan Bell Telephone Company reported “during the observance period scarcely a light showed on the manual phone control boards.” Capt. Don S. Leonard, director of the Office of Civilian Defense for Michigan, said the statewide observance was the first time in the history of the state and probably the nation when so great a body of people has been brought together for a single moment of prayer. Interviewing people on the streets of Detroit, a Free Press reporter shared one of invasion day’s most poignant accounts: “I was passing a downtown hotel when the siren blew. The doorman was opening a cab door and a passenger got out. I saw the Irish doorman cross himself and start praying as the whistle stopped. The passenger, a Jew, stood next to him and bowed his head. The cab driver looked at them and then he came out and joined them. They stood a full minute and, I’d swear, it was a Catholic, Jew and Protestant joined in one prayer. Mister, to me that was America.”

Northville Public Schools

IB Preparing Students for the FutureNorthville Public Schools prepares students for the future through the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programmes. The innovative approach to learning means students join an

unparalleled global network committed to developing knowledgeable, caring young people equipped to succeed in the 21st century. Northville High School (NHS), along with Hillside and Meads Mill middle schools are fully authorized IB World

Schools offering the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for sixth through 10th graders and the Diploma Programme (DP) for 11th and 12th graders. MYP provides academic challenge that encourages students to embrace the connection between traditional subjects and the real world by becoming critical and reflective thinkers. DP is a demanding inquiry-based two-year curriculum that works in a cross discipline manner – and leads to qualifications recognized by leading universities. Both the MYP and DP curriculums require varied “capstone” experiences that help students stretch creativity, give voices to their learning, and focus their passions. For DP candidates, this includes a 4,000-word research-based Extended Essay, a “Theory of Knowledge” epistemology class, and activities/ reflections based on Creativity, Activity and Service. The MYP Personal Project helps students understand/apply themselves as learners and consider multiple perspectives to strengthen their understanding of complex issues. For example, NHS sophomore Anna Ling is putting the final touches on her Personal Project that creates an interactive German workbook for second-language learners living in Germany, as well as at the German School in Ann Arbor. “The Personal Project helped me to think about my interests and experiences and how to turn them into something that could make a difference for others,” Ling said. “I learned a lot about project management, creating a plan, researching and producing the end product.” Anna will pursue the DP next year as a 2021 candidate.
