We will explore the world in a number of

different ways. We will incorporate ESL learning,

arts and crafts, games, puzzles, and projects.

We will work our way through parts of

speech, conversation, writing, and

pronunciation. We hope this will greatly deepen

not only your knowledge of the English

language, but your desire to learn as well.

The arts and crafts for this camp will be

very diverse in nature. We will attempt to create

artifacts from the countries we visit. This could

be a fun piece of art or a full on craft project we

will create to fit in with the locals.

Also, who said learning cannot be fun? We

will have loads of fun playing games and doing

puzzles to help us figure out our journey and

travel plans. These puzzles will guide us around

the world.

We hope that you will enjoy your trip

around the world sponsored by the Hans

Language School.

To complete your journey, we will celebrate

the end of our travels. This will include a party,

movie viewing, awards day, and a fun showcase

of your crafts to your parents. We are very

excited that you have decided to join our group

of travelers. We hope you will enjoy your trip as

we all learn English and world cultures together!

LET THE ADVENTURE BEGIN!

Learn English while

traveling around the world!

Why  was  the  Eiffel  Tower  Built       The  Eiffel  Tower  was  built  for  the  1889  World  Fair  which  also  coincided  with  the  centenary  of  the  French  Revolution.  Out  of  a  number  of  designs  submitted  as  part  of  a  competition,  Alexandre  Gustave  Eiffel  won,  and  was  responsible  for  erecting  the  Eiffel  Tower.

Following  are  a  few  important  facts  about  the  Eiffel  Tower:

The  erection  of  the  Eiffel  Tower  began  on  January  26,  1887  and  was  completed  on  March  31,  1889.  It  took  2  years,  2  months,  and  5  days  from  start  to  finish.  Alexandre  Gustave  Eiffel  was  the  main  architect,  Maurice  Koechlin  and  Emile  Nouguier  were  the  main  engineers,  Stephen  Sauvestre  was  the  main  architect,  and  Jean  Compagnon  handled  the  construction  of  the  Eiffel  Tower.  Alexandre  Gustave  Eiffel  is  the  very  person  who  created  the  internal  frame  of  the  Statue  of  Liberty  in  the  year  1885.  The  Eiffel  Tower  stands  324  meters  tall.  The  material  used  for  the  Eiffel  Tower  was  9441  tons  of  wrought  iron  (puddle  iron)  of  the  highest  quality.  A  total  of  18038  pieces  of  wrought  iron  were  joined  together  to  create  the  Eiffel  Tower.  Approximately  60  tons  of  paint  is  required  to  paint  the  Eiffel  Tower.  The  Eiffel  Tower  is  painted  every  7  years  in  3  shades  of  brown  (darkest  shade  at  the  bottom).  Even  today  painting  the  Eiffel  Tower  is  done  using  brushes.  In  clear  weather  (very  seldom  seen  today)  you  can  see  approximately  42  miles  from  the  top  of  the  Eiffel  Tower.  The  base  of  the  Eiffel  Tower  covers  a  square  area  of  100  meters.  The  Eiffel  Tower  was  to  be  dismantled  and  the  metal  sold  as  scrap  20  years  after  it  was  constructed,  but  this  never  happened.  The  Eiffel  Tower  was  the  tallest  structure  when  it  was  built,  but  this  has  been  surpassed  over  the  years.  Today,  the  Eiffel  Tower  is  open  to  the  public  every  day  of  the  year.  You  can  use  the  steps  only  till  the  second  platform  (the  third  platform  is       accessible  only  via  elevators).  Over    200  million  people  have  visited  the  Eiffel       Tower  since  its  inception

Home  of  the  Olympics

The  OlympicsThe  Ancient  Olympic  Games  was  a  series  of  competitions  held  between  representatives  of  several  city-‐states  and  kingdoms  from  Ancient  Greece,  which  featured  mainly  athletic  but  also  combat  and  chariot  racing  events.  During  the  Olympic  games  all  struggles  against  the  participating  city-‐states  were  postponed  until  the  games  were  finished.  The  origin  of  these  Olympics  is  shrouded  in  mystery  and  legend.  One  of  the  most  popular  myths  identifies  Heracles  and  his  father  Zeus  as  the  creator  of  the  Games.  According  to  legend,  it  was  Heracles  who  first  called  the  Games  "Olympic"  and  established  the  custom  of  holding  them  every  four  years.  A  legend  persists  that  Heracles  built  the  Olympic  stadium  as  an  honor  to  Zeus.                                        The  most  widely  accepted  date  for  the  inception  of  the  Ancient  Olympics  is  776  BC;  this  is  based  on  inscriptions,  found  at  Olympia,  of  the  winners  of  a  footrace  held  every  four  years  starting  in  776  BC.  The  Ancient  Games  featured  running  events,  a  pentathlon  (consisting  of  a  jumping  event,  discus  and  javelin  throws,  a  foot  race  and  wrestling),  boxing,  wrestling,  and  equestrian  events.  Tradition  has  it  that  Coroebus,  a  cook  from  the  city  of  Elis,  was  the  first  Olympic  champion.

In  April  1986,  Chernobyl'  (Chornobyl'  in  Ukrainian)  was  an  obscure  city  on  the  Pripiat'  River  in  north-‐central  Ukraine.  Almost  incidentally,  its  name  was  attached  to  the  V.I.  Lenin  Nuclear  Power  Plant  located  about  twenty-‐five  kilometers  upstream.

On  April  26,  the  city's  anonymity  vanished  forever  when,  during  a  test  at  1:21  A.M.,  the  No.  4  reactor  exploded  and  released  thirty  to  forty  times  the  radioactivity  of  the  atomic  bombs  dropped  on  Hiroshima  and  Nagasaki.  The  world  first  learned  of  history's  worst  nuclear  accident  from  Sweden,  where  abnormal  radiation  levels  were  registered  at  one  of  its  nuclear  facilities.

Ranking  as  one  of  the  greatest  industrial  accidents  of  all  time,  the  Chernobyl'  disaster  and  its  impact  on  the  course  of  Soviet  events  can  scarcely  be  exaggerated.  No  one  can  predict  what  will  finally  be  the  exact  number  of  human  victims.  Thirty-‐  one  lives  were  lost  immediately.  Hundreds  of  thousands  of  Ukrainians,  Russians,  and  Belorussians  had  to  abandon  entire  cities  and  settlements  within  the  thirty-‐kilometer  zone  of  extreme  contamination.  Estimates  vary,  but  it  is  likely  that  some  3  million  people,  more  than  2  million  in  Belarus'  alone,  are  still  living  in  contaminated  areas.  The  city  of  Chernobyl'  is  still  inhabited  by  almost  10,000  people.  Billions  of  rubles  have  been  spent,  and  billions  more  will  be  needed  to  relocate  communities  and  decontaminate  the  rich  farmland.

The  Chernobyl'  catastrophe  derailed  what  had  been  an  ambitious  nuclear  power  program  and  formed  a  fledgling  environmental  movement  into  a  potent  political  force  in  Russia  as  well  as  a  rallying  point  for  achieving  Ukrainian  and  Belorussian  independence  in  1991.  Although  still  in  operation  up  until  the  year  2000,  the  Chernobyl'  plant  is  now  totally  shutdown.

Answer  the  Questions:

1.What  year  did  the  Chernobyl  disaster  take  place?

2.What  time  did  it  happen?

3.Who  were  the  first  people  outside  of  Russia  to  discover  something  happened?

4.Which  other  two  countries  now  independent  of  Russia  were  greatly  affected?

5.How  many  people  still  live  in  Chernobyl?

6.What  year  was  Chernobyl  completely  shut  down?

OPINION:

Why  do  you  think  people  would  still  live  in  contaminated  and  dangerous  areas?

Indian  CultureMehindi  (henna)

Page 77: Around the World in 30 Days

[77]

Mehndi  (Hindi:  !ह#दी)  Mehindi  is  the  application  of  henna  as  a  temporary  form  of  skin  discoloration  in  theIndian  Subcontinent,  as  well  as  by  expatriate  communities  from  these  areas.  Mehndi  decorations  became  fashionable  in  the  West  in  the  late  1990s,  where  they  are  sometimes  called  henna  tattoos.  Henna  is  typically  applied  during  special  occasions  like  weddings  and  festivals  like  Divali,  Bhaidooj,  Teej  and  Eid.  In  some  Hindu  festivals  every  woman  tries  to  have  Henna  done  on  her  hands  and  feet.  It  is  usually  drawn  on  the  palms  and  feet,  where  the  color  will  be  darkest  because  the  skin  contains  higher  levels  of  keratin  which  binds  temporarily  to  lawsone,  the  colorant  of  henna.  Henna  was  originally  used  as  a  form  of  decoration  mainly  for  brides.

“I want my mummy!”Today we are making a

mummy of our own!

The earliest ancient Egyptians buried their dead in small pits in the desert. The heat and dryness of the sand dehydrated the bodies quickly, creating lifelike and natural 'mummies'.

Later, the ancient Egyptians began burying their dead in coffins to protect them from wild animals in the desert. However, they realized that bodies placed in coffins decayed when they were not exposed to the hot, dry sand of the desert. Over many centuries, the ancient Egyptians developed a method of preserving bodies so they would remain lifelike. The process included embalming the bodies and wrapping them in strips of linen. Today we call this process mummification.

The Statue of Liberty is a huge sculpture that is located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. This monument was a gift to the USA from the people of France in recognition of the French-American alliance during the American Revolution. The formal name of the statue is "Liberty Enlightening the World." It pictures a woman who has escaping the chains of tyranny (the broken chains lie at her feet). Liberty's right hand holds a torch that is a symbol of liberty.

Liberty was designed by the French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. The hollow copper statue was built in France - it was finished in July, 1884. It was brought to the USA in 350 pieces on a French ship called the "Isere" (in June, 1885). The statue was re-assembled in the USA and was completed on October 28, 1886.

There are 354 steps inside the statue and its pedestal. There are 25 viewing windows in the crown. The seven rays of Liberty's crown symbolize the seven seas and seven continents of the world. Liberty holds a tablet in her left hand that reads "July 4, 1776" (in Roman numerals), our Independence Day

The statue is 305 feet 1 inch (93 meters) tall from the ground to the tip of the torch. The nose alone is 4 ft 6 inches (1.37 m) long.

The Liberty Bell, located in Pennsylvania, changed the world on July 8, 1776. It rang out from the tower of Independence Hall. It was used to summon the citizens to hear the first reading of the Declaration of Independence by Colonel John Nixon. In the 1800s, the Liberty Bell became a symbol for ending slavery in America. The Liberty Bell is famous for its large crack. People don't know when the crack first appeared on the bell. The crack got worse over time and people didn't want the bell to break apart. In order to preserve it, it was decided that the Liberty Bell should never again be used. The bell hasn't been rung since Washington’s birthday in 1842.

Northern  LightsWhat  causes  this  beautiful

phenomenon?

The  Northern  Lights  are  a  beautiful  scene  that  happens  in  the  polar  regions.  They  are  referred  to  by  many  names.  The  most

common  is  the  Aurora  Borealis.  It  was  names  after  the  Roman  goddess  of  the  dawn,  Aurora,  and  the  Greek  name  for  North  wind,  Boreas.  It  was  named  this  by  Pierre  Gassendi  in  1621.

The  northern  lights  are  not  a  magical  occurrence.  They  can  be  explained  by  science.  It  is  a  natural  light  display  in  the  sky  that  is  caused  by  the  collision  or  crashes  of  charged  particles  that  are  directed  by  the  earths  magnetic  field.  That  is  why  these  occurrences  happen  near  the  polar  regions  of  earth  as  they  are  the  most  magnetically  charged.  The  colors  are  determined  by  what  kinds  of  gas  are  being  emitted  (nitrogen,  oxygen,  etc.)  Oxygen  usually  causes  green  or  brownish  red  lights,  and  nitrogen  usually  causes  blue  or  red.

Answer the following questions in complete sentences:

1. What is the most common name for the Northern Lights? ______________________________________________

2. What regions does this phenomenon mostly take place in? ______________________________________________

3. Who named the Northern Lights?______________________________________________

4. Where does the name Aurora come from?______________________________________________

5. Why do the particles light up?______________________________________________

6. What color lights does nitrogen cause?______________________________________________

THE  DAY  OF  THE  DEAD“El  Dia  de  los  Muertes”

Background  Information

•  El  Día  de  los  Muertos  began  as  a  pre-‐Columbian  celebration  and  was  greatly  influenced  by  the  Spanish.•  It  is  a  ritual  honoring  the  dead  and  has  been  practiced  for  nearly  3,000  years  by  pre-‐Hispanic  groups  such  as  the  ancient  Maya,  Aztec,  and  Toltec.•These  groups  occupied  Mexico,  Guatemala,  and  Belize.•When  the  Spaniards  arrived,  they  tried  to  convert  the  Aztecs  to  Catholicism,  which  meant  they  had  to  destroy  this  ritual,  but  the  Aztecs  refused  to  let  this  sacred  ritual  die.•In  pre-‐Hispanic  times,  el  Día  de  los  Muertos  was  celebrated  in  August.  When  the  Spanish  could  not  destroy  the  holiday,  they  moved  it  to  November  1st  (All  Saints  Day)  and  November  2nd  (All  Souls  Day)  to  make  the  ritual  more  Christian.•Today  it  is  celebrated  more  in  smaller  towns  than  in  the  cities.  This  tradition  is  slowly  fading.  (Do  you  think  the  same  thing  is  happening  with  holidays  and  traditions  in  the  U.S.?)

Events

•Families  go  to  the  cemetery  and  decorate  the  graves  with  flowers.  •They  build  ofrendas  (alters  with  offerings)    in  the  homes  with  gifts  for  the  deceased.

Skulls  •Skulls  symbolize  death  and  rebirth.  •The  Aztecs  and  Mesoamerican  civilizations  kept  skulls  as  trophies  and  displayed  them  during  rituals.  •The  skulls  were  also  used  to  honor  the  dead.  •The  skulls  are  typically  grinning  because  they  are  laughing  at  death.  •  They  can  be  made  from  paper,  wood,  paper  mache,  tin,  or  sugar.Calacas  •These  are  toy  figurines  for  children.  •They  are  used  to  introduce  the  concept  of  death  to  children  so  that  they  arenot  afraid  of  it.

Famous Landmarks in Mexico:Ruins at Chichen Itza

Chichen was founded by the Maya civilization in 400 AD and it is located in the north central, north of Yucatan Peninsula now called Mexico. Chichen has a history that is 1500 years old and is located 75 miles from Merida. It is said to have been the main regional point for different ceremonies. During the earlier days & time, it was governed by priests.

Chichen means “At the mouth of the well of Itza”. The word Chi stands for ʻmouthʼ, Chen for ʻwellʼ and Itza for ʻthe Itza tribeʼ. The main belief is that people were thrown from the top as a sacrifice to make their god happy and the ones who could survive were the ones who were believed to be seers.
