Flag retirement ceremony set for Bismarck AMVETS Post 9 will hold its annual flag retirement ceremony at the post headquarters in Bismarck at 6 p.m. . It is a general practice that when U.S., state and other flags are so badly torn, soiled, or faded that they are no longer fit for display, they are destroyed in a dignified manner, usually by burning. Prior to the flags being retired, a ceremony is held to verify that the flags are no longer serviceable. The public is invited to attend with a social beginning at 6 p.m. and the ceremony at 6:30p.m. The AMVETS choir will perform and there will be a free lunch immediately following the ceremony
