Grand Prairie

HOLT CAT, in a continued effort to provide the most

comprehensive customer service, now has two

new metroplex locations. The opening of the two

new metroplex locations will provide customers convenient

options to meet their rental, parts and service needs.

“North Texas is growing, and HOLT CAT is growing with

it,” said Dave Harris, HOLT CAT Vice President and General

Manager. “Convenience is as essential as quality, and our

Metroplex customers will now have more access to the CAT®

products and services that HOLT CAT has available.”

The Grand Prairie store is located at 2615 North Forum

Drive, and the Lewisville store is at 1800 East State Highway

121. Both stores have machine sales and rental capabilities,

plus a complete parts inventory. In addition, service for

selected small and medium sized machines is available at

each location.

HOLT CAT operates three other stores in the Metroplex

providing machine sales, rentals, parts and service – Irving,

Fort Worth and North Dallas. n

H ere at HOLT, we are always striving at

ways to improve our customer service.

HOLT now has “Customer Service

Coordinators” whose job is to keep our service

customers informed on the progress of in-shop

repairs. Once a machine is brought into a HOLT

CAT shop for repairs, our Customer Service

Coordinators will begin contacting the customer to keep

them informed on the progress of the repair job. They will

also be able to let the customer know if additional problems

were encountered.

Customers appreciate having a point of contact during the

repair process. The role of the Customer Service Coordinator

is evolving into much more as we continue to learn what our

customers expect and how we can continue to keep the lines of

communication open. Today we have a process that is in place

and working, but we will continue to make improvements to

the role of the Customer Service Coordinator to better serve

Advancedpowertraintechnology

The new 930G is powered by an electronically controlled

Cat® 3056E Direct Injection Turbocharged (DIT) engine

with Air-to-Air After Cooling. The engine is rated at 150 net

horsepower and has a 37 percent torque rise, which enables

increased power during heavy-duty use. It meets EPA Tier 2

exhaust emission requirements and offers a unique automatic

derate feature which protects the hydraulic and transmission

system by compensating for altitude and engine overheating.

Low cylinder pressure rise and low peak pressure enhance

reliability and durability. The cooling system and engine are

located in separate compartments to minimize sound levels

and improve service access. Cooling is provided by an on-

demand hydraulically driven fan that reduces noise and

enhances fuel economy. Improved sealing of the engine

doors and fine mesh air-intake screens minimize debris in

the cooling cores, extending intervals between cleaning.

A reversing fan option is available for high airborne debris

environments.

Load-sensing steering makes

more power available for rimpull,

breakout and lift forces with

steering mode which allows a

In order for HOLT CAT’s exchange component program to

work, we need exchange cores that can be rebuilt. Due to

a higher demand for exchange components, we have had

to change our policy on core return credit time frames. The

following paragraph from our Revised Parts and Core Return

Policy explains the updates that are now in place.

Current earthmoving and fine grading processes are

labor intensive and dependent on manpower and

instruments. Maintaining consistent grade between

stakes has always been challenging even for experienced

Hanson Aggregates

rebuiltHanson PLC is one of the world’s leading heavy building

materials companies. It is the world’s largest producer

of aggregates – crushed rocks, sand and gravel-and

one of the largest producers of concrete products, clay bricks

and ready-mixed concrete. Hanson’s US aggregates unit,

Hanson Aggregates, Inc., is headquartered in Dallas, Texas

and produces aggregates, asphalt, ready-mixed concrete and

cement for markets throughout the U.S. Hanson Aggregates

is divided into 4 regions: West, Southwest, Mideast and

Northeast, operating in over 350 locations in North America.

In 1998-1999, Kirk Fuller, Plant Manager for the Bridgeport

and Chico Texas Quarries, remembers when Hanson

purchased the first Cat haul truck for the Chico Quarry. “Back

then, you could count the number of Cat machines on one

hand. Now seven years later, it’s easier to count the number of

non-Cat on one hand,” said Fuller. Currently, they have ten 777

Cat haul trucks, five 740 articulated trucks, three 992G wheel

loaders, two 992D wheel loaders and one backhoe loader.

The five Cat 777 trucks were all purchased at the same

time and ran trouble free for 18,000 hours, and it was

anticipated that they could get another 18,000 hours out

of each with a power train rebuild. Curtis West, the Plants

Mobile Equipment Manager maintains all the trucks and

equipment at Cat recommended intervals, utilizes SOS

sampling and has HOLT do whatever his shop is not equipped

for. (Cat recommends rebuilds at 15,000 hours.) Hanson had

never done a complete rebuild in the past, only components

– engines and transmissions – but knew that the trucks

would have to be rebuilt, so it made the most sense to do the

complete rebuilds as opposed to partial repairs (too much

downtime for each repair.) These rebuilds not only consisted

of engines, torque converters, differentials and final drives,

but also included radiators and brakes.

Hanson and HOLT CAT planned for about one year on how

to complete all the rebuilds in succession without interrupting

or negatively impacting plant truck production and operation.

Another thing that was considered was making sure that all

the needed parts for each rebuild were on hand and ready.

HOLT was prepared with all the needed parts for each rebuild

and Hanson did their part by prepping and cleaning the

machines prior to the overhaul. They also made shop space

available to complete the rebuilds, thereby eliminating haul

time and added expense.

To be done correctly, a truck was brought in from another

plant to fill in for the truck that was undergoing its rebuild.

Each truck rebuild would take about three weeks and Hanson

allowed two weeks for any adjustments that might be needed

before the next truck was taken out of production. Also, the

first truck was taken out of production before the 18,000 hour

interval to make up for the added hours that each of the other

trucks would put on during the three-month rebuild process.

“We did the five 777 trucks in about three months and did

not miss a lick on the production side. We are not set up for

big overhauls, so we depend on dealerships such as HOLT for

this,” explained Fuller.

Fuller summed up his thoughts by saying, “I don’t know if

we could have done this if we did not have the dealership as a

partner – they have the manpower, resources and knowledge

to be able to do this large of a project. The key to success was

that we had time to sit down and go through all the what ifs,

and we were able to modify schedules to make this work. Our

goal was to have all the rebuilds completed before the end of

2004 and we did it. It says a lot for both Hanson and HOLT to

be able to coordinate this much work on five trucks – rolling a

truck in, getting the rebuild done and getting the truck back

into production without interruption.”

Curtis West said, “The parts and service capability are

important factors to us in selecting the dealership we work

with. If they don’t have parts and service to support your

machines they don’t have anything. HOLT has a parts store

and five full time service technicians in our area. We buy CAT

equipment because they are good machines, but without the

support from their dealerships, they would be nothing.”

Other HOLT services that Hanson has used include: line

boring, field welding, hydraulic repair and the undercarriage

repairs. What future plans lay ahead for this partnership?

Hanson has five 740 articulated trucks that when the time

comes, they plan on rebuilding the same way they did the haul

trucks, with plenty of strategic planning so as not to interrupt

their day-to-day plant production and operation.

So as Hanson is looking to the future and is currently

developing plans for growth and expansion, HOLT CAT will

strive to be a key partner in Hanson’s continued success in the

aggregate products business. n

HOLT CAT has recently announced the option to

customers to extend the life of ground engaging

components with the unique Caterpillar Mechanically

Attached Wear Plate System (MAWPS) developed for Cat

wheel loaders, excavators, mining shovels, truck bodies,

dozers, hoppers, crushers and any other similar equipment

enduring abrasive and impact wear.

Andy Jameson, HOLT’s GET (Ground Engaging Tool)

Business Manager, says the Caterpillar MAWPS is a much

more practical alternative to conventional weld-on or bolt-on

wear plates. The installation of Caterpillar MAWPS is less

labor-intensive and the system can be fitted to flat or curved

surfaces such as bucket bottoms and sides, dozer push arms,

hydraulic excavator ski runners, truck bodies, and non-mobile

equipment such as hoppers and crushers.

“And with the correct maintenance of the MAWPS,

customers may enjoy a cost saving of as much as 30%,” he

adds. “This effectively takes our service a step further by

affording customers the lowest cost per hour by extending

the life of ground-engaging buckets, dump bodies and other

components.”

• Long replacement intervals: Efficient use of wear

material lengthens replacement intervals, adds less

weight to the bucket, and lowers cost of operation. The

special Cat design allows more of the wear plate to be

worn compared to other competitive wear plates. Wear

plates have recessed holes in each corner that serve as

wear indicators. Those recessed holes permit technicians

to replace plates at the most opportune time – when full

use of the plate is achieved and before damage to the base

plate.

Flexible application: The weld-on base plate can be

installed on virtually any flat or moderately curved

surface needing wear protection. The system has been

designed to take loads from any direction regardless of

orientation of the base to the load.

The Caterpillar MAWPS line comprises four series

of wear plate families, of standard and heavy-duty

thickness, designed to take sliding-type wear loads from

any direction in a wide variety of medium to large mobile

equipment. Wear plates can also be used in hopper chutes

or dump targets and other non-mobile applications.

Industrial Services, depends on HOLT Rental

Services for her equipment needs. “HOLT Rental

Services has quality equipment when we need it and has a

fast delivery time,” says Murphy. “Another rental company

did not deliver the equipment on time and their equipment

broke down once it was delivered. That is when I started to

look into CAT equipment. Our equipment operators had

When asked if Sunbelt Industrial Services has encountered

any problems with HOLT Rental Services since becoming

a customer two years ago, Murphy responded, “Yes, we had

one minor incident where I had ordered a bucket for a mini-

hydraulic excavator that did not fit because the bucket had

the wrong number welded on it. Fort Worth HOLT Rental

Services Sales Representative Chad Nelson immediately

drove to HOLT’s Irving location, got the correct bucket, came

out to our jobsite and installed it on our machine. We really

never had major problems with HOLT Rental Services,” adds

Murphy.

Sunbelt Industrial Services is an environmental contractor

that does excavation of contaminated soil, installation

of treatment systems and the removal of underground

storage tanks in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma.

The company is headquartered in Fort Worth and has 17

employees.

Sunbelt Industrial Services rents CAT Backhoe Loaders,

Wheel Loaders, Excavators and Track-Type Tractors. “Renting

equipment is more cost effective for our business because

our jobs are spread out over a large territory. It would cost too

much money to move equipment from one state to another

and we do not have to worry about servicing the equipment,”

adds Murphy.

Sunbelt Industrial Services has experienced tremendous

growth over the past few years. “We are going to expand our

marketing effort and will definitely rent more equipment

from HOLT Rental Services,” says Murphy. n

W hen CAPROCK Specialty Contractors, LLP needed

a new skid steer loader that could be modified to

accommodate a 90-inch saw blade for cutting

41 inch thick concrete, they turned to HOLT CAT. “The

competitive skid steer loaders did not have the auxiliary or

throttle power that we needed for the saw blade to work,”

says Brad Boyd, CAPROCK’s Manager of Demolition and

Highway Department. He adds that Zach Farrington, HOLT

CAT’s North Dallas General Construction Equipment Sales

Representative, is part of the solution. He is very responsive

when I need something. “He does not always tell me what I

want to hear, but he is very honest and tells me what I need

to do.”

CAPROCK first used a CAT 268B Skid Steer Loader to cut

concrete to full depth while replacing a taxiway at Dallas Love

Field. “The saw blade prevents vibration from traveling to the

terminal when the concrete is being broken up,” says Boyd.

“This is the only skid steer with this type of blade on it,”

says Boyd.

“I really need to give credit to the blade designer and to

HOLT CAT for having a machine that could handle the

torque. Competitive machines just did not have the torque

power,” adds Boyd.

Another feature that Boyd likes about his new skid steer

loader are the joystick controls. “Competitors always charge

extra for this feature and HOLT CAT does not,” says Boyd.

CAT Skid Steer Loaders have much better auxiliary flow

and horsepower than its competitors. Boyd used to operate

competitive skid steer loaders and adds that CAT gives him

the competitive edge because he can pick up a lot more in

one load with a CAT Skid Steer Loader than he could with the

competitive machines and CAT Skid Steer loaders are much

more versatile. Boyd really likes the throttle power and says

that it saves his company at least 30 percent on fuel. He adds

that the engine compartment is easily accessible from both

sides and he does not have to remove the radiator to perform

scheduled maintenance.

CAPROCK Specialty Contractors, LLP was established

in July 2001. The company has 180 employees and is

licensed in 27 States and Puerto Rico. CAPROCK is a

commercial waterproofing, floor polishing, concrete sawing

and demolition company. The company is working on

numerous projects including highway construction in the

Dallas / Fort Worth area. CAPROCK Specialty Contractors,

LLP has experienced major growth over the past few years.

As the company continues to grow, Boyd plans on purchasing

another CAT Skid Steer Loader and a CAT Backhoe Loader.
