PREFACE
The six suites for solo violoncello by Johann Sebastian Bach have not been preserved in the composer's autograph but only in the hand of Anna Magdalena Bach. As is well known, Suite No.5 inC minor has survived in Bach's autograph in a transcription for lute, written in staff notation and transposed toG minor; as well as in tablature in the hands of others. The first four of the remaining suites are presented here arranged for the lute and written in tablature.
Unlike the transcription of the violin partitas and sonatas, the suites presented in this volume required transposition to keys more appropriate to the lute; moreover, compared with the lute versions of the violin pieces, the transcriptions of the violoncello suites are less demanding technically. Perhaps for this very reason they may appear to produce a more attractive sonority.
The following works served as the basis for the present arrangements:
The facsimile of Anna Magdalena Bach's manuscript in the former Preussische Staatsbibliothek in Berlin (dated between 1727 and 1733);
A copy by Johann Peter Kellner (c1726), cf: Hulshoff;
The edition by August Wenzinger (Barenreiter no. 220, Bale 1950);
The "Studies over de zes suites voor violoncello-solo van Johann Sebastian Bach" by G. Hulshoff, Arnhem, 1962.
Hulshoff's book provides valuable pointers to other manuscript copies, amongst them the one by Johann Peter Kellner. These copies display minor discrepancies with each other, the majority of which can hardly be considered to be errors. (Only obvious mistakes have been corrected without further explanation in these arrangements).
My arrangements have been made with the thirteen-course lute in mind, but owners of eleven -course instruments should have little difficulty with these pieces if they play an octave higher any notes in question from the bass line. (The elevencourse lute was still very much in use in Bach's time).
I have added few ornaments but numerous extra bass notes and have made other additions in order to enrich the harmony. Where the original contains an implied polyphony, these arrangements have been written out in two lines, and few slurs have been notated in order to give the player as much freedom as possible.
I owe especial thanks to the lutenist Nigel North for letting me use his transcriptions, made in 1985, of the Courante, Sarabande and Gigue from the Suite no. 4. I also thank Friedemann Hellwig and Michael Lowe for their help in translating the preface.

VORWORT
- das Faksimile der Abschrift von der Hand Anna Magdalena Bachs (zwischen 1727 und 1733 entstanden) in der ehemaligen PreuBischen Staatsbibliothek Berlin;
- eine Abschrift Johann Peter Kellners (urn 1726), vgl. Hulshoff;
- die Ausgabe August Wenzingers (Barenreiter Nr. 220, Basel1950);
