An example of this are surge arresterswith polymeric composite housings.This housing consists of a glass fiber-reinforced plastic tube with a siliconrubber insulation. Thanks to its designand the high quality of the materials
used, this arrester offers a numberof advantages, such as absolutely reli-able pressure relief behavior and highmechanical strength even after pres-sure relief. Of particular advantage isthe water-repellent effect of the siliconrubber which is also transmitted to pol-lution layers.
Besides their high resistance in outdoorconditions, Siemens surge arresterswith polymeric housings also have along service life and can be disposed ofin an uncomplicated manner.

Our 3EL and 3EQ arrester use the sameMO-blocks as our arresters with porce-lain housing resulting in the same excel-lent electrical performance. The use ofpolymeric housings consisting of FRPsand silicone rubber leads to additionaladvantages:

Silicone rubber has been used as out-door insulation material for more than25 years with good service experienceeven under severe climatic and environ-mental conditions. Today it is the most
widely used polymeric material for HVoutdoor equipment.
Silicone is highly hydrophobic. There aremany polymeric materials with hydro-phobic properties, but most of themloose their hydrohpobicity after a rela-tively short period. Only Silicone has theability to maintain its hydrohpobicityduring its lifetime. This results in a longservice life of our 3EL and 3EQ arresters.
Additional important properties of silico-ne are:

One example of the ex-tensive tests carried outwith highly modern test-ing equipment is themeasuring of residualvoltage with a nominal
discharge current of 10kA,8/20 s on a 3EP3 ar-rester for a 420-kV system.
