CONTESTING : Resources and Schedule Links

Amateur Radio provides several different areas of interest and focus for its enthusiasts. Some folks become interested in Amateur Radio to provide public service, some like the personal security of knowing that they will have communications with their friends and loved ones, whatever the status of public modes of communica-tion. Others like the challenge of contacting all states and countries, seeking awards like “Worked All States” or “DX Century Club”, and, for 2018, the ARRL International Grid Square Chase! Many like to participate in var-ious contests that take place throughout the year. There are many easy ways to find our how to become involved and how to fine-tune your contesting skills, or to find a contest to participate in. Right within our own state, the Tennessee Contest Group provides a wealth of information about contesting, from their dedicated “Contesting 101” tab, to information about specific contests with-in the state and around the world! Check out their website at http://k4tcg.org/ There are several other sources of contesting schedules and information available online. AMATEUR RADIO EMERGENCY SERVICES (ARES) ... If you are not part of your local Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) group, please consider becoming a member.

They offer valuable services their served communities, not just in times of severe conditions, but many also serve the com-

munications needs for local events. As an ARES member, you will learn ways to enhance your Amateur Radio operating

skills BEFORE you need them. For more information about ARES in the ARRL TN section, check out web page at http://

tnares.com/ .

“ARES volunteers are licensed amateur radio operators who are organized and trained to provide emergency communica-

tions during emergencies and public service events. "When all else fails" is a motto of ARES because in many instances,

amateur radio communications are operational when other communications systems have failed or are over burdened.”

To get involved, simply find the county you wish to serve in on the tnares.com website, and get in contact with the emer-

gency coordinator.
