Summer is now upon us and with the rising

temperatures and extend-ed daylight, we will be-gin to see more stresses on our irrigation system. In order to prepare for the summer months, we completed auditing all of our sprinkler heads in or-der to ensure that they are working properly. While we do our best to ensure that our pumps are work-ing as well as possible, it is important to remember that no irrigation system is 100 percent efficient. As the heat of the summer approaches we will begin

to see the inefficiencies of our older irrigation system. In order to im-prove the efficiency we will prune any low-hang-ing tree branches, as well as hand water and place small sprinklers through-out the course to help combat any dry areas.

In order to help prepare

our tees, fairways and ap-proaches for the summer, we began core aerfication on June 15th. We will clean-up the cores on the tees and approaches and they will be top-dressed with sand. The fairway

cores will be allowed to dry and then will be dragged back in. While fairway aerification can be frustrating for golfers, it is an important process to help with water infil-tration and overall root and plant health. We will schedule this renovation process as best as we can to cause the least amount of impact to play as pos-sible. Our goal will be to only have two fairways ae-rified at a time.

Thank you for your pa-

tience as we complete this integral process.

Greetings from

Your golf course maintenance staff

The last page of Westway’s magazine, which one re-

ceives through the Automobile Club, is a wonderful historical piece. It is basically what I try to achieve here in my monthly efforts. This Arrows issue espe-cially mimics their format, i.e., a photo, then captions and/or narrative in order to enhance the nostalgia of the image. Hav-ing said that I would like to pick up where we started from in last month’s article with the aeri-al view of Arrowhead Country Club from late 1947. I started to do that last month but I got caught up in my pout about us soon becoming guests in our own house, or émigrés at other clubs like the Russian expatri-ates in the last few episodes of Downton Abby. Okay I’ll stop whining. I promise.

The 1947 clubhouse is the

first clubhouse built on this site. We are now occupying the second clubhouse, or the 1966 clubhouse. Arrowhead was not meant to be the subject of the photo and it is therefore off in the distance and located indis-tinctly in the top quarter of the original picture. One almost has to know what they’re looking

for in order to derive any bene-fit from the view. I mentioned last month a friend of mine say-ing “I could stare for hours at a photo like this.” Well, he hap-pens to be a native of San Ber-nardino which heightens one’s interest. The ultimate benefit in regards to viewing the photo is derived from being a native and also an Arrowhead member, and especially a member since be-fore this photo was taken.....and of course one must be old. In looking through one of our re-cent rosters none of our current members had joined when this picture was taken but some of them are 2nd or 3rd generation members and they would there-fore be familiar with some of the features identified in the image.

The photo, which was shot from the east looking west, shows the 1947 clubhouse un-der construction and the en-virons around the clubhouse being cleared for landscaping. The swimming pool had been completed well ahead of the clubhouse and is just barely vis-ible above the clubhouse. The photo is so aligned as to have us sighting right down 36th street but 34th street is also well de-fined and both streets terminate at the golf course. As we contin-ue to look to the left (south) we can see that Marshall Blvd. just keeps right on going through the course across Valencia until it hits the wash. Very well de-marcated is the circular lay-out

of Fairmount Dr. and Maywood cul-de-sac north of the golf course.

The photo doesn’t show the

activity in the swimming pool, which I had just mentioned in the preceding paragraph, but I can tell you from experience that it was populated. I was swimming in that pool before the picture was shot and I can remember the stacks of lumber alongside the pool as they were preparing for the start of the clubhouse construction.

As you look to the west

above the clubhouse you cross Parkside, then Waterman, and keep going across vacant fields to a new track of homes which stands out on Lugo Ave. just one block this side of Sierra Way. That track was built in 1947. My dad was the painting contractor for the developer and we had just moved in to one of those brand new homes and I could now ride my bicycle to the course. I definitely remem-ber being able to look east from my house across the chaparral type growth all the way to the Eucalyptus growing along Va-lencia.
