L’Hôtel particulier Aghion est menacé de destruction par son propriétaire. Un permis

de démolir a été délivré sans qu’aucune expertise préalable n’ait été engagée. La décision

du Ministère de la Culture de classer l’édifice (Décret 278, Conseil des Ministres 2008) n’a

apparemment pu aboutir. Le Tribunal Administratif d’Alexandrie aurait en effet refusé de

surseoir à la destruction au motif que le permis de démolir aurait été délivré antérieurement à

la décision de classement (13 juin 2009).

Or il s'agit d'une oeuvre exceptionnelle, tant par la qualité de son architecture, que par la

position qu’elle occupe dans la trajectoire des frères Perret. Elle représente une étape

décisive dans l’élaboration du vocabulaire Perret. Sa disparition nous priverait d’un maillon

essentiel pour comprendre un héritage déjà mutilé par la démolition de la Villa Elias Awad

Bey au Caire (1930-1938) et de l’Immeuble d’habitation Ali Yehia Bey à Alexandrie (1938-

1939). Il serait dommageable qu’un ensemble qui aurait pu être pris en charge par l’État

subisse un sort analogue à celui de toute l’architecture moderne d’Égypte, que l’on sait par

ailleurs être un trésor inestimable, L’Hôtel particulier Aghion doit être protégé. Le dossier

d’archives permet de suivre, grâce aux centaines de documents conservés, les recherches

qui ont abouti à cette oeuvre savante mais aucune photographie ni aucun document récent

ne permet d’enrichir les maigres études sur l’édifice. Dans Les Frères Perret : l’œuvre

complète, Maurice Culot, David Peycere et Gilles Ragot en font pourtant un édifice clef de

l’architecture Perret : « Sans renoncer aux principes fondamentaux qui sont les leurs, les

frères Perret n’ont, semble-t-il, jamais été aussi proches du style "1925" qu’avec l’hôtel

Aghion. Le plan palladien, la hiérarchisation des volumes, la demie rotonde de la façade sur

jardin ». « Tous ces éléments concourent en effet à l’inscrire dans l’architecture Art-déco ».

Et d’ajouter enfin : « En dépit de ses résonances Art Déco et de quelques emprunts au

vocabulaire local, l’Hôtel Aghion sera perçu comme l’une des meilleures occurrences du

classicisme de Perret ». Déjà à l’époque de son édification, les critiques parisiens en

faisaient l’éloge, comme Gaston Varenne qui en 1927 écrivait : « C’est dans l’Hôtel Aghion

que l’esprit inventif des Perret pouvait se donner cours le plus librement. Ils disposaient ici

d’un emplacement suffisant pour entourer l’hôtel de jardins avec pelouses, dallages, miroirs

d’eau ; ils pouvaient se permettre le luxe d’une coupole de mosquée, couronnant à plus de

onze mètres de hauteur le hall entre le grand salon et la salle à manger, et leur façade est

d’une agréable inspiration mi-orientale, mi-occidentale ».

Par son caractère exemplaire, l’Hôtel particulier Aghion préfigure un certain nombre

d’éléments jusque-là inusés par les Perret et qui seront le sceau de leur vocabulaire

architectural. Mais voilà, la façade sud de Villa Aghion a été attaquée à coups de bulldozer

dans la nuit du 28 août 2009. Et si elle ne tient plus qu’à un fil, il est néanmoins encore

temps de la sauver. Démanteler un tel patrimoine sans même en faire une étude préalable

serait dommageable. Ce serait tirer un trait de plus sur ce qui a fait la gloire et l’histoire de

l’Égypte, ce serait amputer Alexandrie d’un peu plus de sa dignité. Ce serait discréditer

définitivement la politique de protection du patrimoine du XXème engagée par le Ministère de

la Culture Egyptien, et admettre le manque de persévérance de la politique culturelle

française.

The Aghion Villa is threatened with destruction by its owner. A demolition permit was

delivered without any preliminary expertise being conducted. The decision of the Ministry of

Culture to classify the building within its preservation list (Decree 278, Council of Ministers

2008) has apparently not succeeded in saving the building. The Administrative Court of

Alexandria would indeed have refused to reject the destruction with the argument that the

demolition permit seems to have been delivered before the decision of classification (June

13th, 2009).

However, it is an exceptional piece of Art, both due to the quality of its architecture,

and to the position which it occupies within the historical production of the Perret brothers. It

represents a decisive stage in the elaboration of the Perret vocabulary. It’s disappearance

would deprive us of an essential link to understanding a heritage already mutilated by the

demolition of the Elias Awad Bey Villa in Cairo ( 1930-1938 ) and of the Ali Yehia Bey

Apartment building in Alexandria ( 1938-1939 ). It would be truly sad if this heritage, that the

State could have helped to preserve, were to undergo a fate similar to that of numerous

modern architectural riches in Egypt, that we all know to be an immense treasure : the

Aghion Villa must be protected. Archive documents allow us to follow, through hundreds of

preserved documents, the research that was crowned with this work but no recent

photographs nor documents are available to enrich the thin studies performed on the

building. In Les Frères Perret : l’œuvre complète, Maurice Culot, David Peycere and Gilles

Ragot describe it as a key building of the Perret architecture: " Without giving up the

fundamental principles which are theirs, the Perret brother have, it seems, never been so

close to the style "1925 " than with the Aghion Villa. The palladian plan, the hierarchical

organization of the volumes, the half-rotunda of the garden façade". " All these elements

indeed contribute to mark it as an Art deco architecture". Adding finally: " despite its Art Deco

resonance and of some inspiration owed to the local vocabulary, the Aghion Villa will be

perceived as one of the best occurrences of the classicism of Perret ". Already at the time of

its construction, the Parisian critics praised it, as Gaston Varenne who in 1927 wrote: " It is in

the Hotel Aghion that the creative spirit of Perret could most freely be expressed. They had

space big enough to surround the hotel with gardens and lawns, tiled floors, ornamental

ponds. They could allow themselves the luxury of a mosque-like dome, crowning at more

than eleven meters in height the hall between the large living room and the dining room, and

their facade is of a pleasant oriental and western inspiration".

By its unique character, the Aghion Villa prefigures a certain number of elements

unused by Perret until then and which will be the seal of their architectural

vocabulary.Unfortunately, though, the southern facade of the Aghion Villa was attacked by a

bulldozer during the night of August 28th, 2009. And although it is miraculously still holding, it

is nevertheless time to save it. To dismantle such a heritage without even making a

preliminary study would be inconsiderate. It would represent one more break with what made

the glory and the history of Egypt, it would be amputating Alexandria of a little more of its

dignity. It would once more, and perhaps definitively, compromise the policy of protection of

XXth century heritage engaged by the Egyptian Ministry of Culture. It would also indicate a

lack of perseverance of the French and Egyptian cultural collaboration policy.
