The image of a river keeps appearing and reappearing in my work, the idea of “river” is very personal and comes from very close at hand, with every detail of that connection buried in my consciousness.

In 1938 at age 17, my brother and I embarked on a grand adventure by canoe on the Shoalhaven River, from its beginnings south of Braidwood, winding through a huddle of mountains like a loose scribble, to the Pacific Ocean at Nowra.

My memories are about the beauty of the landscape and the river, of being constantly in and out of the water, of battling rapids, of catching fish and camping every night by the river.

We must have passed by the property which Arthur Boyd subsequently gave to the nation and possibly camped on his little beach, opposite Pulpit Rock. I may not have known then who Arthur

Boyd was, but in a strange twist of fate 44 years later, I was offered the opportunity to live in Boyd’s big house and to work in his studio.

The Shoalhaven River and the surrounding landscape are very beautiful, powerful and subtle, but my paintings of the landscape also frequently contain images of figures and landscape intertwined, to make the point (as many indigenous peoples do) that we and the environment are one and interdependent.

Foreword Guy Warren

Many of my works are the result of a long association with the south coast of NSW. It is a land of countless beaches and headlands, dramatic escarpments, hills, rugged bushland, rivers, rainforest and farms.

Shoalhaven museums are as diverse as they are inspiring, so take your time exploring another world or another time.

From historical exhibits to maritime collections and antique machines – we’ve got an array of interesting museums for you to learn something new and revel in our past.

Along the shore, Jervis Bay Maritime Museum exhibits a rich local Aboriginal history, captivating shipwrecks and maritime battles. The iconic Lady Denman Ferry, built in Huskisson in 1911, has retired here. Check out Australia’s Naval Aviation history, showcased at the Fleet Air Arm Museum at HMAS Albatross, located inside a very cool hangar building with its own flight simulator!

Nowra Museum is found inside the old police station, and a beautiful 130-year old bank houses Berry Historic Museum, both transporting visitors to times of Aboriginal history and early European settlement.

In picturesque Kangaroo Valley at the Pioneer Village Museum, the 150-year old farm buildings and historic grounds highlight yesteryear, whilst Meroogal House in Nowra lovingly displays the lives of four generations of Shoalhaven women, and hosts an annual art prize.

The Tabourie Lake Museum near Ulladulla is a quirky treasure trove of discovery. A local historian’s personal collection, it’s filled with Aboriginal artefacts, minerals and local marine life. The nearby Fossil House has a collection of fossils and rocks in Ulladulla’s oldest house which dates back to the 1850s.

From top class touring exhibitions to local artists inspired by the unspoilt Shoalhaven, you won’t want to miss out on the gems at our galleries.

Iconic artist Arthur Boyd was so captivated by the landscape that he donated his famous property, Bundanon, to the Australian people. You can visit any Sunday for a guided tour of his studio and homestead, home to works from the Boyd family and other iconic artists such as Sir Sidney Nolan, John Perceval and Brett Whiteley. The beautiful gardens are nestled alongside the Shoalhaven River so take a stroll here on this excellent day trip.

The artistic hub, Shoalhaven Regional Gallery in Nowra hosts some of our best touring collections, whilst smaller, more intimate spaces such as Precinct Galleries in Berry, The Studio

Gallery in Callala, The Wall Art Projects and also Alley Gallery in Ulladulla, showcase our fantastic local talent.

For something fresh on your wall head to Muir House Gallery in Berry, Huskisson Framing & Gallery or Millhouse in Milton. You might end up buying a piece from Australia’s next rising star. Galleria Aniela in Kangaroo Valley specialises in museum quality art and sculpture. For a striking Aboriginal artwork, you can’t go past Giriwa Garuwanga Art Gallery in Ulladulla or the Bidjigal Aboriginal Art and Crafts Gallery at Huskisson.

Combine art and the outdoors with sculptures, murals, gardens and Aboriginal culture.

Immerse yourself in incredible artworks amongst the glory of Mother Nature. The streets of Nowra showcase a bunch of epic murals painted by world-renowned graffiti artists such as Adnate and Smug. A number of our public amenities also feature some mural art. This tongue in cheek Toilet Mural Trail has really brightened up local parks and reserves such as Ulladulla Harbour and Currarong foreshore with paintings of shorebirds and original work from local artists. A look down during a stroll of the main street of Milton will reveal five mosaics from a local project, there’s eye candy everywhere!

During your 100 Beach Challenge quest, stop and gaze at the Aboriginal Carved Poles by Jerrinja Elder, Uncle Noel Wellington around Callala and Culburra Beaches.

Near Ulladulla, the One Track for All and Coomee Nulunga cultural walks showcase Aboriginal art, illustrated stories and more carved sculptures by local elders.

Appeal to all your senses at our lovely gardens – just double check opening hours while planning a visit! The topiaries and garden rooms are amazing at Merribee, Shoalhaven Heads Native Botanic Gardens has giant pencil sculptures right by the beach, and Willinga Park hosts tours of their Sculpture Garden. Every October, Escape ARTFest in Milton-Ulladulla also puts on a fantastic show with Sculpture at Petana.

Cute and kitsch mixed with refreshingly modern, shop our local makers for a unique souvenir.

Whether you’re after a souvenir that oozes a bit of retro, nanna charm or something sleek and modern, we’ve got a variety of shops and studios that celebrate the hands of the local artisan.

Meet the maker at both Kangaroo Valley Woodcrafts and Kangaroo Valley Leadlights stores - you might catch a glimpse of them at work. Or head to Berry Community Craft Cottage, Werninck Cottage in Nowra and The Inlet Spot at Sussex Inlet for some homely knitted, handcrafted or crocheted pieces.

The Artisan Collective in Nowra runs creative workshops and has a huge selection of local handmade products and The Point Gallery and Craft showcases unique ceramics,

leatherwork and mosaics whilst overlooking the oyster farms of Crookhaven River in Greenwell Point. More handcrafted wares plus upcycled goods can be found at Sol Sisters, Artisan Collective in Ulladulla.

Milton’s arts precinct, Courtyard Studios, houses woodwork experts Milton Timber Gallery, Shop Three Gallery with eclectic, rotating works for sale and Nulladolla Pottery which sells handmade pieces and also hosts exhibitions on-site and in town. Tucked away in the nearby hills is Yatte Yattah Pottery, the studio of local potter Kees Staps who creates beautifully glazed porcelain goods.

Add some entertainment to your trip with live music and performances from local and international acts.

Catch quality Australian and international theatre shows and musical performances at state-of-the-art Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre, our region’s largest and busiest venue. For fun and colourful musicals, follow local theatre troupes, the Nowra Players and Albatross Musical Theatre Co, who perform at the Entertainment Centre and Nowra Players Theatre in Bomaderry.

Gorgeously historic Milton Theatre, built in the 1920s, is one of the coolest places to see a gig. With its prime location in the middle of town and old-school charm, it’s a favourite stop off for some well-known Aussie artists plus international acts.

Musicians are also often gigging at dining venues such as the Mountain Ridge Wines, Harvest Bar and Cupitt’s. If you feel like hitting the dance floor, head to The Marlin Hotel in Ulladulla, they often host big name-acts like Coolio and Pete Murray.

Tomerong Hall features touring bands with blues, funk and soul flavours. The venue is small, quaint and always packed with great vibes. Or check out some classic pub rock at the Sussex Inlet Tavern where bands such as British India and local acts play.

Explore our country towns filled with old charm, history and architecture.

The Shoalhaven’s rich Aboriginal heritage goes back tens of thousands of years, pre-dating any colonial history. Over the last few hundred years, the region has yielded interesting European style architecture, much of which has been well-preserved. Some of the oldest buildings can be found at Jindyandy Mill and Coolangatta Estate, where Alexander Berry first settled in 1822.

Embark upon a historic walk to experience the best of our history, gazing upon well-preserved architecture that dates back to the 1800s and 1900s.

Amongst quaint cottages and old terraces, highlights are the School of Arts in both Berry and Nowra,

plus Australia’s very first suspension bridge in Kangaroo Valley. Grab lunch at a heritage pub like Berry Hotel or the Friendly Inn in Kangaroo Valley, or watch a movie at Nowra’s Roxy Cinema, an art deco dream.

Meander through our villages past showgrounds with gorgeous grandstands, courthouses, and heritage homes like Meroogal. Then venture out to the coast, spotting quintessential Australian beachside cottages in all their fibro glory. These coastal enclaves captivated photographer Max Dupain, with his famous ‘Sunbaker’ image shot here at Culburra Beach in the 1930s.

Channel your creative self by delving into a new artistic pursuit while relaxing in the Shoalhaven.

Create some handmade magic with a kokodama or succulent wreath workshop at The Mud Shed in Bomaderry or a traditional Aboriginal basket weaving class with Diedre of Bugiya Naway Buradja in Jervis Bay. You can shop for quilting supplies or take a class at Quilt & Co in Berry and Jukejema in Nowra, and This Old House in Berry runs mosaic, furniture, macramé workshops and more.

A girls’ weekend calls for a delicious chocolate making workshop at The Chocolate Cottages in Milton or during the holidays for the kids at The Treat Factory in Berry. Creative Escapes also offer photography and string bag making workshops whilst taking care of your accommodation needs further south.

Spark the kids’ imaginations at a clowning, drama or theatre class at Livewire Studios, Ulladulla or a hands-on crafternoon of drawing, painting or ceramics at House of Jules in Milton – with courses for adults too! At Bonza Beads in Nowra, you can stock up on a variety of loose beads and also learn bracelet and necklace making during the holidays.

Our four Shoalhaven Libraries all also offer great literary activities such as kids’ holiday arts plus local heritage and author talks. You will probably need to book, so look out online for dates and times!
